Mordeth - The Eye of the World

The Lost One

Recommended Posts

I have started another re-read of the series and I was confused at something that happened in The Eye of the World.

When they go into Shadar Logoth for the first time and Mordeth lures Matr, Rand and Perin down to help him carry the treasure out.....at the point you think Mordeth is going to attack he screams and starts yelling about how they are all dead...and then runs away.

What happened?  Why didn't he get them?  and why did he run away? and what did he mean about them being dead?

What happened?  Why didn't he get them?  and why did he run away?

Two possible reasons come to mind.  One, with three ta'veren together, very unlikely things are bound to happen.  His fear of the Aes Sedai with them might have overcome his anger, unlikely as that seems, or he might have sensed Rand's ability to channel, or the link between them and Moiraine from their Tar Valon marks.

what did he mean about them being dead?

He was just shouting threats.  He was apparently scared ... by something.

Rj confirmed some time ago that Rand was one of the heroes bound to the wheel and the horn, I don't know if perhaps anyone ever asked about Mat and Perrin. If they all are maybe thats what Mordeth ment, he felt their souls and knew them and screamed because he was faceing dead men reborn.

I figure he was pissed they'd lied too him about how many people were in their party and where they were going, and then putting Tar Valon with the Aes Sedai witches knew they had some power behind them. Because he's so screwed up and took such offense at being decieved by these vessals he wished to consume (as he later did Padan) he sent Mashadar after them.

He did? where?

Seem to recall quite a discussion on that subject, and it basically ending with both sides deciding that they were right but neither ahving any definite proof.

Q: "Is this soul born in any other age, or only at the advent and (theoretically, of course) the closing of the Third Age, as The Dragon/TDR?"

A: This soul is one of the Heroes, and bound to the Wheel, spun out as the Pattern wills.  "It" is born in other ages, but in a non-Dragon incarnation, to suit the pattern of that Age.  In the course of this answer, he related this to why Hawkwing calls Rand "Lews Therin" at Falme--because Hawkwing recognizes this Soul.  This didn't really tell me why he specifically calls him "LTT", but apparently they've been hangin' together in T'A'R and the etiquette there is to call each other by the name of your last incarnation.  (My interpretation.)

you're all looking for a deeper meaning in something quite simple.  he knew it was almost night and that mashadar would be coming out soon.  he figured that it would kill them the same way it would anyone.  also, i'm guessing that it could probably harm him as well, which is why he went to hide.

Back to the topic - I think we have all discovered in reading the books over and over, that RJ gives us clues and other little hints that we did not pick up on in our first reading.  That is the main reason I read the series over and over.  I pick up on things that I missed.  There usually is a reason behind odd things that happen, and you guys help me figure out why - or you already know why and tell me.
