Organized game board: Changes to make.

Here’s what I think needs to change on this board.

No stickying games. There are few enough of them running that they won’t get lost. Also, if we take to stickying every game played the board is gonna be coated in stickies someday. Sticky only these threads: Scoreboards/Mod signups (game signups can be started after each game, and can fade away into obscurity after the signup is done, we then also don’t have to keep signups to a single thread, which can be confusing) and other important information threads, such as new forum moderators or a thread of game descriptions (I’ll elaborate on some other time) and such stuff.

the games that are finished will eventually be unstickied. so the board wont be all stickied threads.

second, to sticky the games that are active is really just a way to make sure they stay on top. as people get more into this board, the plan was that otehr kinds of games will be played here as well that arent the same size as the Mafiagames. so I think we will keep them stickied. but as I said, when they are finished, they will be unstickied..

the signups are I believe already in seperate threads..

and if you want to make a thread of game decriprions that would be awesome.

its kinda late here, so I dont knwo if I managed to explain the sticky thing proåperly :-\

By stickied games, I was simply referring to current on-going games. Right now its not bad, as we've only got about 2 or so games running, but when the board becomes more active, and we have more and more various games going, we won't be able to sticky them all, for fear of overwhelming the board with stickies.

i tried not stickying the new game... people were...not comfortable with it. really there aren't that many on going games at the moment, i htink that until things pick up, not stickying anything else would be o.k. but this is something boyo, danya and i will talk about.

Not long ago, Barm had suggested that there be one main mafia game and one newby game going on at any one time, which I thought was a really good idea. Running too many games at once makes things confusing and cuts down on the number of players for any one game. I personally like that these games are stickied. Why not have a number of games that run in similar style,so that the main features are always stickied (could be four or five max) and that's it.  This also promotes people getting in line to mod and keeps things nice and orderly.

but the thing is, this board is for any games that are organised and take a bit of skill. so, we should never set a limit on what is run. nor should we ignore the new prospects.

I agree - there is nothing that would be ignored! But, just as on the other boards, the "hot topics" being stickied lends itself to more participation and gives the board a focus and an identity. So for now, mafia games are the main attraction, and the more people drawn to participate the better. But the more people drawn in also translates into more people to take part in the other games. So here is where I guess I ought to clarify what I suspect the goal of DM to be - traffic!  And the sort that we want (PG13, but clever and willing to contibute. Just like us!) I may be wrong about the goal, but It seems that a lot of the controversy lately is centered on changes based on how many people visit the site vs. how many people want the sit to have exclusivity (private clubs) vs. the negativity brought to the entire site through arguing. I know, I wish it were that simple and easy to solve too, but that seems like the general gist to me. So back to stickied topics - I think it's just an easy way to highlight (market) popular topics. Haviing said all of that, if the games are not stickied, you know everyone will just find them anyhow.

for now, until we maybe pick up the traffic, i think we should start unstickying the games and leave the ones barmy suggests. it would leave the place looking cleaner. if it becomes a problem finding things, we can always just take to stickying them again.

When I suggested that I did not know that there were prospects for a games board. Now that we have an entire board for it, I figure if we have the traffic to have 3 or 4 mafia games going at once, why not?

The only reason I can think of is that the number of players per game will be smaller if multiple games are going on. That's actually why I thought you suggested it. That was before you announced that you were Australian.

Why do we need a seperate thread for sign ups?

Why not just have a sign up thread, that turns into the game thread once enough people have signed on?

I also don't think we should a public thread, the whole point of killing Kivam is so he won't help the townies find the mafia...

seperate threads for signups. first of all, the signup can often be abit chaotic as you see in the newest one. secondly, it much easier for players that the game starts on page one, with the list of players and everything else that the mod feels he/she should let the players know, and goes on all the way to the last page. its just to make it a it more tidy in the game threads. they can be confusing enough as it is.

and about public threads, I think they are ok, but maybe there could be a limit for what people could say there? atm tho, I dont mind them at all. lol.. but I see your point Ilgross.

Since the first post is done by the moderator, then he can always edit it so that it shows whatever you want.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a list of players and dead people at the beginning of every night/day

Don't you think you want to leave that choice up to the mod? Whether or not to have a public board, when to list active players, and other nuances are what make each game unique.  Imposing a lot of rules will only result in playing the same game over and over ( you know, the one where Kivam get's killed first, Alys and Far are evil and Talya is suspicious, only to find out the Sirayn knew everything the whole time..)  Organizing the sign-ups and givinng detailed explanations about each game while operating under general guidelines should bring in more players, (which is great!) and throwing out different variations on the games keeps it interestinng. If you go to mafiascum.com, you'll see many variations and different rules to play by, which I personally would love to try!

I'd say leave the public thread up to the mod. I'm not a huge fan of it myself, and won't be using it, but I certainly found it helpful in both of the games I've played that have had one. Not that I've ever been dead long enough to make use of it myself.

And I am Canadian, I announced that I wasn't Aussie, and the confusion came when I added the disclaimer telling the Aussies not to be offended.

While the mod should have a large degree of freedom, I think if it is to be a mafia game, then some rules should be put into place. Rules that make mafia a mafia game and not some random RPing thread.

Spam should be limited.

No Players should be un-killable (1 or 2 immunities from NKs is OK, but nothing permenant).

Random deaths should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Perhaps a rule that there is no talking at night?

Roles should be handed out randomly.

etc. These make for fair games. Not predictable ones...

Spam should be limited.

Given that a large number of players are fiddlers, this is asking a lot. However, I have seen people get modkilled for spamming too much. It really does depend on how much spam you think is acceptable.

This should be left up to the mod.

Random deaths should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Leave this up to the mod as well. Although losing half of the players during day 1 is perhaps a bit of over-kill.

Perhaps a rule that there is no talking at night?

This is a rule. On other websites it is enforced. No mod has ever enforced it here except Kison to the best of my knowledge.

Roles should be handed out randomly.

Leave this up to the mod. I know I have made sure that specific roles went to specific people for reasons that I felt were valid. I have handed some out randomly too.

Just my opinion.

to me it also depends on what kind of spam it is. not all spam is good. but personally I think we need some posting thats not analyzing or sentencing someone to death. a bit of light posting makes the 1000 word posts much easier to get through. at least thats my opinion about it. but I do agree that the one word spam and smiley spam and posting bout somethig thats completly off the topic can be pretty annoying.

edit because I cant spell  ::)

The first games I played here, it was discouraged to talk during a night stint...the mod would tell us we were supposed to be asleep.

As for the Stickies (I know going back here), but why don't you have a Thread of on going games. This will be atickyied by a mod, and not spammed and locked.

In this thread there would be links to the current games. This would then only be updated by the mods, when games finish and start. It would stop a lot of stickies, especially in the future when there maybe many games on the go.

Just a little thought.

Though I agree with Danya, a little spam does not hurt a thread and in most cases, people say things in them that may be useful to the game.

i am not certain i understand what you mean. do you mean a post with link of all the current games in it for quick reference?
