In my younger days, we had things called "typewriters".  Miserable dadgum contraptions.  They had something similar to a keyboard, but much harder to use.  You actually had to develop a feel for how much pressure to apply to the keys because they activated the striking arms mechanically and if you got out of rhythm or happened to hit two keys at the same time the dirty buggers would go up together and hang up and give you a double image after it smeared the ribbon.  Oh.  They had a  ribbon, too.  Those were nasty things to deal with.  You don't want to even think about those.  Anyway, some people actually learned to use those devil-designed devices quite handily (except for blondes).  Others simply memorized the key locations and used the index finger of each hand to type with.  They would "hunt" for the key they wanted then "peck" it with their pointer.  Thus, the term "hunt-n-pecker".
