The Free Zone residents had gathered once again in the amphitheater.  He was obliged to be there with them - they had grown to know him as one of their own, as he worked with them side by side to clear out the dead of Boulder, Colorado, and restore electricity to the town.

 

Nobody would have known him by sight, not unless they'd been in the Southwest during his little tri-state crime spree before the superflu. Gods, that had been a terrible idea.  It was all Poke's fault, of course.  He'd never have resorted to murder on his own.

 

There was a lot he could blame on Poke, when he thought about it.  Being stuck in Phoenix when the superflu hit, almost - ALMOST, he said - having to resort to cannibalism... and making a deal with the devil himself to be allowed to walk free.

 

He owed Flagg his life, and in return, he agreed to this assignment.   Go to Boulder, Flagg had said.  Walk among them. Get close to their leaders.  And when you can, disrupt their plans.  Well, he'd made a start.  The group at the amphitheater, though... they weren't so sure he was on the level anymore. 

 

Lloyd Henreid had never been known as a smart man, but he guessed he knew a bit more than they did.  He'd known that much all along.

Also I've been sussing Penguin since my first couple of posts. Had him in red on my first read list. Anyone who's scummed with me before knows I don't like to bus, and I'm not bold enough to try a Kivam gambit.
