As the last opening to the Blind Eternities collapsed and the ever-present howl from the void between worlds retreated, the quieter ambiance of the sprawling city beyond settled into the space.  In truth it was a wonder the infinite metropolis still had quiet corners, but the lack of guild interference was of little concern for those gathered.  The room was dominated by a grand table, with several chairs littering the walls and devoid of occupants.  A dozen individuals stood stock still, a look of worry on all their faces even as they did their best to keep from interacting with each other.  The new arrival pulled back a blue cowl from his hawkish features, studying each in turn.  “I see you all received my message,” Jace affirmed grimly.  “Let us cut to the chase.”

A robustly built man growled in the corner, crossing his arms over a massive half-moon axe propped beneath them.  “Sooner rather than later,” Garruk muttered.  “I hate staying in cities longer than I have to.”

“Ravnica is no stranger to the wilder things, much as it may seem,” the cloaked man replied smoothly.  “Be that as it may, there are more pressing issues than that of environs – or rather, one’s choice of them.  Our focus concerns all environments of every plane.”  Reaching into an inner pocket he procured a small glass jar, stoppered at the top with thick resin and a solid plug.  “This was found recently in the jungles of Naya, far from where it should be.”  He set it carefully on the table, centering it so that all present could observe the jar’s contents.

Inquisitive eyes turned to the strange silver-gray filament in its glass prison.  It seemed benign enough, resting in a tiny puddle of what appeared to be inky sap.  When they had discerned what the contents were a few of the members hushed.  The scoundrel Dack Fayden chanced a nervous laugh, reaching lackadaisically for the container.  “So Naya’s growing some new mushrooms or something.  What’s the big deal?  I thought it was just a big jungle anyway.”

Beside him a giant leonin with pale white fur gripped his arm, forcing the man’s arm back to the table.  “Have a care with what you say, for some of us call that ‘big jungle’ home.  I would not have something so evil take root in my domain.”  He released the man, returning to stand next to a woman who was staring at the jar with a haunted look that bleached all color out of her features.  Jace pitied Elspeth; she had gone through more atrocities because of the Phyrexians than the rest of them combined, and some of the worst experiences surfaced in her thoughts as residual memories.  But there was no helping the matter.  They would need as many planeswalkers as they could find, and her expertise was valuable.

He waited for the inevitable mutterings to die down before he continued.  “This is the last strand of a substance called mycosynth,” he explained, casting his gaze around the room until he met every person’s eyes.  “It is the first sign of a much greater and far deadlier threat, the seemingly innocuous change that heralds the coming of greater nightmares.  It was destroyed where it grew, as was the unfortunate victim of its spread.”

Reaching for the leylines of blue mana carefully networked below them he wove an illusion over the table, showing one of the great gargantuans of Naya’s underbrush collapsed in a dark pool of viscous ooze.  Even the foliage had died back, and the creature lay dying in what looked to be a barren patch of land.  Now everyone was silent; even if they had not encountered the substance before, they knew what ailed the creature they saw before them.  “Glistening oil,” one of them breathed.  “The Phyrexians,” muttered another darkly, following it with a curse.”

Silence fell.  None wanted to be the first to give voice to the conclusion they knew was inevitable.  “It would seem the threat of New Phyrexia is no longer contained to solely one plane,” a raven-haired woman voiced aloud, crossing her arms over her dark violet dress and ample bosom.  “What do you propose we do about it?  Run away, like you always do?”

At the challenge Jace bristled for a moment before hardening his stare.  “This threat is larger than one individual, or one plane.  We cannot run from it, we will not be able to escape it.  If we ignore it we doom not just ourselves, but every plane in existence.  The Phyrexians cannot be allowed to retain the knowledge of how to travel the Blind Eternities.”

Beside him Chandra tossed her hair back, flicking her wrist at the glass jar.  It burst into flames, the heinous strand reduced to a soot stain in the middle of melted silicate In a matter of moments.  “It burns,” she remarked simply.  “I know what my plan would be.”

Her action elicited a few weak chuckles from around the room.  Jace let the noise die down before continuing.  “We split into two parties,” he explained.  “A smaller force will walk to Alara to ensure that the Phyrexian influence does not spread.  Ajani, you know Naya best; you’ll lead the team there.”  When the leonin nodded his affirmation, Jace looked about to the rest.  “Garruk, you would be able to work with the animals there; go with him as well.  Sarkhan and Tamiyo, you will be providing them support.  Extra eyes and an analytical mind could be the difference between success and failure.  If all goes well, there won’t be much conflict you’ll have to deal with.”

Dack struck the table animatedly, a lopsided grin on his face.  “An entire jungle to explore?  You guys got lucky; there must be tons of temples and artifacts no one’s using!”  He laughed airily to himself, wilting suddenly at the unyielding stare he received from Ajani.

“The rest of us will lead an offensive into New Phyrexia itself,” Jace continued without pause.  “We will find where their machines are allowing them to walk between the planes, and we will destroy them.  Koth, I hope that the world has not changed overly much.”

“More than you know,” the Vulshok retorted heatedly.  “We have already tarried too long.  And there are those of us who still remember it as Mirrodin.”

“Let us waste no more time, then.”  The barb remained unacknowledged as Jace raised his hood, reaching out his hands and opening once more a way to the Blind Eternities in front of the wall closest to him.  “Keep a weather eye on our surroundings, and we will all of us make it through,” he said calmly, feeling the fluctuation as Koth led into the the chaos between worlds.  He felt a similar path open on the other end of the room, held by Ajani.  As the other planeswalkers closest to him marshaled through he reached a tendril of his consciousness toward the leonin.  Gently letting his presence be known so as not to startle or anger him, Jace projected a quiet thought.  There are veiled thoughts among us, darker stirrings than any should have.  Be wary.  He waited until he noticed Ajani’s cautious nod before himself heading into the Blind Eternities.  Their path was set: to New Phyrexia, and the horrors that waited for them all.

For my sake, please use forum names when voting.

Actually let's make that a rule. Unless you use the forum name or abbreviations of it I won't count your vote.

Alright cool.

So, do you two get to talk out of thread? I can't see that working without private communication
