Discuss Prologue Through Chapter 2

YAY!! just waiting now for the book to come!

Wow, Sanderson and Jordan have "set the table" with these chapters for big developments to unfold.

Rand comes down from the mountain with all the darkness gone, a positive beacon of light, and on his way to Tar Valon to see Egwene and that should be BIG NEWS. Stop the presses. And then we'll see if Gawyn is still hanging out waiting to speak with Egwene about their relationship and will he freak out and go ballistic? Or will she quickly bond him and rein him in? LOTS of anticipation building!

Graendal plots anguish for Rand and will attack Nynaeve and Min. (But at least we are rid of Halima/whatisnameinthisincarnation.) Yet Graendal is not aware of Nynaeve's experience with Moggy and may set herself up though so crafty she is?

And then there was that creepy stuff with Fain! Zombie Trollocs now?

Galad was beaten but Asunawa went too far and got his just reward. (It was weird listening to the audio chapter 2, the reader is a little flat in tone.)

And I think that Galad may have a positive effect on the Children and end their excesses. But you just know he will have to rein in Byar et al when they meet up with Perrin. And how will his meeting with Morgase unfold? Should be great. Really looking forward to getting the book now!

I feel like he was going to see Egweene too but how can we be certain?

To all the people that complain people dont die in the series... That last page or two of the prologue! they were NEW people and i was all OMG...

No people complain that no one fans are attached to die. Random Aiel Maiden's, borderlanders never seen before, the Amayar - they don't have you chewing your nails wondering if a character you've followed for multiple books is going to die (and stay dead). It's red-shirts versus Red-wedding. None of the 3 ta'veren can die (permanently) before the DO is toast, but I'd be happy (story wise) for several around that are semi-major characters (Lan, Nynaeve, Faile, Gawyn, Galad, Morgase, Bashere, Egwene, Elayne, Aviendha, Min, Moraine (true death), etc.) to die and stay dead. Some I like, but if the world is broken again to a large degree yet nearly all of the above survive it will feel somewhat contrived.

Just something I was a little confused about in Graendal's section of the prologue. After Delana is done with her compulsion weave on Ramshalan, Graendal tells Aran'gar that she must also lay a weave of compulsion on him to confuse Rand. She tells her to put something convoluted, and wanting a man's touch on the mind etc. But she then describes the compulsion woven by Aran'gar as thick and complex and thinks that "it was somewhat pretty". If Aran'gar, as the reincarnated Belthamel, uses saidin and not saidar, then how is it that Graendal can see Aran'gar's weaves and describe them as being pretty etc.? Not sure if I'm missing out on something here but I was under the impression that it would be impossible for her to see the weaves, unless they were both using the True Power, which only Graendal has access to, and limited access at that.

good point renfield... unless she could see where the weaves were because they were interwoven with the saidar, so she could see the blank gaps that she presumed to be saidin. isnt that described way back when with the bowl of the winds, there was 'gaps' (for lack of a better word) in the saidar that elayne guessed was the threads of saidin.

Thinking about Fain, and the way he is now 'outside' the Pattern.. and he's thinking that 'you didn't hunt something when you knew exactly where it was going to be. You merely showed up to meet it.'

And 'the thing that used to be' Padan Fain / Mordeth knows that Rand will be at Shayol Ghul. So it goes there - outside the Pattern - and encounters the Dark One's prison.

What next? Does it breach the prison? Does it destroy the DO with that dagger? When Rand turns up, will he find a new Dark/Twisted One waiting for him?

I wasn't sure where to bring this up, but did anyone else notice the grammatical difference in writing between RJ and BS? I thought this might be helpful to the people who would like to know who wrote what.

Brandon omits the "Oxford comma", while RJ does not. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, Wiki "Oxford comma". It's the comma before the "and" in a list.)

For example, in ToM prologue, talking about Heeth Tower, Brandon writes on p50 "put archers at every choke point, kill slit and window."

In contrast, in EotW, RJ writes in ch5, The Gleeman: "You want a few weeks of cold, boredom, and sleeping rough?"

Brandon's list does not have the comma, while RJ's does. I thought this might help people identify the writer, but of course it doesn't work for things RJ audio recorded and then someone else transcribed.

That's nice attention to detail, but not definitive of anything. I favor the Oxford comma myself, but sometimes, when I'm in a hurry, I forget it. Then there's editors and proofreaders, they can add, change, or rearrange things from how they left the author's fingertips.

I have some info you might find interesting on this subject. I read on his forums, I think, that Brandon prefers serial (or series) commas, same thing as Oxford. He is a notoriously bad speller, so maybe he also doesn't always get the punctuation he prefers into his manuscripts, but this is a clue that unfortunately throws your hypothesis on its head. You're not the only one who has guessed wrong about who wrote what. A year ago, Brandon stated, while sitting across from me at a restaurant, right next to Harriet, that everything he had read on the web (at the time) theorizing on which sections were his and which were RJ's in The Gathering Storm were wrong. EVERY ONE! And recently, at a signing I believe, Brandon stated that the chapters in Mat's POV (that he has been universally criticized for) in TGS that sounded "off" to everyone were actually written by RJ. I bet Harriet just recently gave him permission to say that and I bet Brandon has been champing at the bit to let that out for a while.

I was noticing patterns of proper use of semi-colons, sadly lacking in large sections in the middle of Towers, then well-used in the last third of the book. Many choppy sentences and others with too many commas would have been greatly improved by use of colons and semis, but that is just my picky opinion.

I did keep notes of other egregious errors and found a whopping fifty-nine! And Peter A. supposedly proofread! I'd like to post them on a typos thread, but haven't found one yet here. Anyone?

And what happened to the Time-Wasters Guide? (Brandon's forum site)
