S3E2:A Question of Crimson - Discussion
Mailman replied to SinisterDeath's topic in Wheel of Time TV Show
Executing someone for a crime is one thing. Executing people including a child in a truce situation is something else entirely. Executing someone just to make your reign easier is something else entirely. Do you think book Morgase would have executed a child under truce? -
S3E2:A Question of Crimson - Discussion

Just managed to get through ep2 and I'm not really sure what I am watching anymore. 100% gone is the good ruler for all Morgase straight out murders children to cement her leadership. For mine this is just an attempt to grab a GoT feel for the show. Morgase looks too old in the cold open which is a bit jarring when Elayne says latter that she took the throne when younger than herself. Morgase also does not feel like the mature beauty of the young Elayne. Gaebril? Another character or is going to be replaced? Not sure the hypothesis that it is some kind of active constant compulsion is right. Whats the range? It must be permanent on those that it affects but what about the ripples to those outside that he does not meet the sheer number of people that know the royals and suddenly people are talking about a royal consort that does not exist must be staggeringly confusing. I mean what if Elayne meets Galad before Gaebril and he starts talking about the royal consort? Galad and Gawyn just banging through the novices it really feels like they are going to make them absolute prats rather than considerate and thoughtful characters they were in the books. Really don't understand Nyn's comments about them she has never met them before as they arrived in the tower that day. I have already gone through the stupid sword training scene. Tower discipline and logic seems amazingly loose. Very hard to track the time jumps. Walking to the waste? Why not at least take a horse? Mandrab where are you. Who the hell did Avi think anyone in that group could have possibly told among the Aiel that they were coming? Alanna making it to the TR before Perrin? The ways don't feel very dangerous at the moment. Rand says he is not afraid then seemingly to me spells out exactly why he is afraid of embracing the source. No one is the TR saying hello to Perrin or taking any notice of Loial or the maidens. The maidens offering greeting to defend the hold to Mistress al'vere when they have no idea who she is and they are in the forge. Smacks of a key jangle for book readers. Pretty much the only thing I liked was Lanfear messing with Egwene's dreams -

But thats kind of my point i would far rather the special effects budget where Stargate level if they could devote 24 episodes to a season. -

I'm going back to things like Stargate. Used to have 24 episodes a year and a midseason break. Large number of sets in it too. -

Same. I don't even really understand why it stopped there is far more money being pumped into shows than ever before and in a climate where having content is key to keeping subscriptions active it feels counterproductive to have 18 month+ breaks. -

Ah that makes more sense. Totally agree 2 year waits for what are fairly low episode count seasons are horrid. This is going to be what a 6 week run of content after 18 months of wait. I long for the old days of 24 epsiode seasons that released every year. -

The visitor number for season 2 seem so small. And i'm not sure if i'm misreading the posts data but 6881 posts would be 350 pages of responses and considering there is under 15 pages in the TV forum thread that has been active since Wednesday at best i am not sure what i am looking at. -

I'm telling the WoT but Liandrin uzi's 3 sisters Siuan uses a lightsaber to kill her and then optumus prime kills the dark one. Are you seriously telling me that you cannot tell me objectively that is bad storytelling. Of course you can storytelling has established metrics that you can use just like sports. -

Digi said there is no such thing as objectively good or bad. So you cannot say objectively that my Hall scenario is bad as storytelling? -

you did notice where i said that i thought it terrible that he had actually managed to capture that many. My point was if the Aes Sedai are not actually going out of the tower how could he have captured so many of them. Surely he is not getting even a small % of those leaving. -

This is also not true. Once you are engaging in a certain field that field has structures and things can be objectively good and bad within that field. Pele is an objectively good soccer player just as there are loads of community park players who are not good. Are you telling me that it would not be objectively bad storytelling if in the Hall fight Liandrin whipped out a uzi and mowed down 3 sisters before Siuan used a lightsaber to kill her and then optus prime killed the dark one. -

Well i sure hope the show does not show us them being competent in other situations then. Ryma seemed to have some abilities when fighting the Seachan? Killing 2 of them despite being outnumbered. Valda had 6 rings on his belt I'm assuming he did not go into TV to get them so quite a few must leave for him to have captured 6 and no i don't think he should have been able to take 6 Aes Sedai it's just what the show gave us. -

Oh please, now who is not being objective. This is purely your opinion and is entirely premised upon your belief that you are right. We are consuming the same media for whatever reason be it like or dislike and this is a place to discuss it. -

@Elder_Haman @SinisterDeath All those things could be the reason why. I just thought it a slightly interesting comparison as it's hard to get good numbers. I would not trust the info coming out of the studios themselves these days as they are not in any way independent. -

But if you have been trained and tested and have centuries of experience and you have not just the ability to strike at them which might be difficult but the ability to construct a large defensive shield just how long should you watch your friends and people you have known for decades die before you help. -

Look you can say that but these are women that have been trained and tested in the 3 arches further trialled by the 100 weaves to remain in control and be able to channel in the most stressful situations imaginable with decades and centuries of experience for them to be taken apart when they have at least a 3 to 1 advantage is just not going to happen. And for all of them to fall prey to this and especially the other 2 greens in the room is just wrong. The problem with this is the warders would be very aware of what healing is capable of so not delivering a killing blow leaves you wide open to her being back on her feet in as is the case literally 30 seconds later and fully reengaged in the fight. It would have been incredibly easy to fix, simply have Liandrin throw herself to a side so the stabs missed the mark, but for two of the most highly trained killers and fighters in the world to not deliver a killing blow to a helpless unmoving target with her back turned is terrible writing. Now, could they have done a Stab and a Decap move timed seconds after the other? Absolutely. But then we wouldn't have the Tanchico plot. When you tie the competence of your character to what the story wants rather than that characters actual competence you are engaged in bad writing. If you suddenly have to make your character do something they are not capable of or not do something they can do to get them out of a situation you have put them in go back and fix it. Elayne and Avi actually go through the first sister ceremony. In the books they are all sisters rather than sexual partners. I have no issue in changing this although does this mean the show is going to give us an orgy scene? When you go with the harem model this is not an issue as not everyone is sleeping together. -

I think I have answered this many times before my attachment to the book series is incredibly deep. I find it amazingly hard to not watch the series despite the fact I think they are doing a terrible job of it. I largely enjoy debating the merits or lack thereof of the show and I find it somewhat cathartic to actually express my displeasure and hope to sway some of those I talk to to want far better than we are being served up. Do you really want just an echo chamber in a forum. From what I have seen recently I am just about the only consistent poster still active on the negative side on this site. -

Entirely possible. Its just with the studios not giving out any really accountable numbers these days getting a metric is difficult. -

Oh come on. Rand trapped Asmodean and basically held him prisoner and he was Rands only hope of learning to channel. That is absolutely nothing like what we just saw. Shadar Logoth they thought was empty it's in no way at all similar to being told that even going out in the city could lead to the tower capturing the male channeler if he was found. If Moiraine had told the boys about Mashdar and Mordeth then you might have some argument. -

One thing I have looked at is the traction on this site for the first episode of season 1 episode 1. The first 2 days of S1E1 saw over eight pages of posts on DM Despite the early release at this point the S3E1 thread has only 4 pages. Episodes 2 and 3 of S3 have only 17 total posts across them during this first day that seems to be a fairly heavy reduction. I don't know how this reflects directly on the overall picture but I don't think it is a good sign for the show. -

Overall another fairly disappointing episode. Firstly the good. Mat and Nyn and his reason for staying in TV excellent scene, gets back to Nyn looking out for the 5 good reason for Mat to stay given they seem to have abandoned the dagger healing path. I don't hate giving Elayne and Avi a more physical relationship it is however a bit jarring that it was all created for the viewer inside one episode I know they had the trip but that was all offscreen. It will obviously change their relationship from sisters to lovers. Actually one more good scene Moggy and the gray man creation was a very good scene. The bad. The whole battle sequence is a mess I have covered a lot of the issues in other post so will not go through it all again, but I will add that despite Siuan saying they could not let them escape there appeared to be almost no effort to prevent the escape apart from 4 sisters and 2 warders. The escape is not concluded the blacks are just gone as soon as they walk through a door. Alaana getting blasted through a stone pillar hard enough to shatter it and being fine with no healing is insane. The boys yelling across a tavern their names where they are from and the word dragon is just the height of absolute stupidity. If the tower has any of the spies Moiraine mentioned they would be there in under one hour. Moiraine and Lanfear working together. Just no. Rand almost bragging and joking about sleeping with Lanfear. At the very least you should have some mixed feelings about sleeping with an immortal force of evil used to scare the children of the land for centuries. The whole Avi Rand dynamic feels really poorly set up. However the worst thing by far is again the damage and healing issues. Nyn gets stabbed 11 times all apparently in the torso and not dead, Perrin appears to be stabbed full on in the chest and is fine. Next day they are just on their feet again no issues. The showrunner have made a tremendous rod for their own backs here the stakes are almost non-existent barring a beheading at this point. Very disappointed with Egwene's arches scene and for someone who is apparently going to be the leader of the tower and love it her arc is going to have to bend hard. -
That was a pretty good scene really like getting the prophecy stuff but did the original prophecy stuff say he would save a remnant of a remnant or that only maybe would he save that much. Really like that Rand is getting sword training Lan still feels much more touchy feely than the books.

So you will not even admit to something I never even said? Something you misinterpreted in an earlier post. And not one single point amounts to anything more than nitpicking. How incredibly dismissive. I would be interested to know just what level something has to rise to in an action scene to be considered more than nitpicking and something that damages the writing, story and worldbuilding.
