I quite like this review - the writer is clearly a book fan but also clear-eyed enough to approach her assessment with the main question being "does/will this work as TV" rather than "does this match what I imagined in my head" - plus is pretty positive:

Question to all of those who went to premier i dont put much stock into the rumors surrounding a different dragon. I dont really even care about saidin and saidar changes that much but from the first few episodes did you get the feel that the choice of dragon would change. I think that would be the only real dealbreaker for me. That character is one of the best characters and arks ever in any medium. I really like the casting i just worry if they change that fact or if the actor cant pull off the more mature version of that character that we get in the later books. Cheers and thanks!
The biggest praise I have so far is the acting. They really collected an excellent, incredible cast. As for changing the Dragon Reborn, I know they won't do it but they're playing coy with it for new people. If you don't mind some spoilers for the first part of episode 1, click below
SpoilerMoiraine arrives at the Two Rivers searching for candidates for the DR. We see her initiate a discussion with Nynaeve, the purpose of which is to ascertain her age (we learn she's 26) after which Moiraine pretty clearly dismisses her; from earlier context we know she's looking for someone 20 years old
If you read the books you know who it is. The fun is in how it will be revealed to both the characters and the audience

As of this post, S1 has a nice 69% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (out of 13 reviews). The critics have seen the first 6 episodes whereas I've only seen 2. And episodes 7 and 8 continue to be shrouded in mystery...

What about the level of language? Did they use book curses or is there a bunch of modern F bombs and such?
What about Sex & Nudity? Safe for family viewing?
What about Violence & Gore?
No F bombs. I do remember either an "ass" or "arse", can't remember which, and a "bastard". Don't remember what else there was.
As for sex and nudity,
SpoilerThere's an implied sex scene but it cuts when they start making out and we rejoin them after one of them has finished napping. There's also a bath scene but only a butt is shown briefly
For violence and gore,
SpoilerEpisode 1 has the most and some of it is pretty graphic but not Game of Thrones level. 2nd episode has a couple shocking moments but limited gore
Depends on how old and familiar with this type of material the family is

16 is the number of deaths of the Chosen in the series (aginor twice, asmodean, balthamel twice, be'lal, graendal once, rahvin, sammael, semirhage, Ishmael twice, lanfear twice, demandred... and m'hael! He counts!)

Ok, now for things I either disliked or had mixed or multiple feelings on.
SpoilerThe pacing at the beginning and the end of Episode 1 felt weird. The early part resolves itself and isn't a big deal but the actual leavetaking the episode is named for is incredibly rushed. I don't know how they could have fixed this without messing with the pacing in the rest of the episode, but it still sticks out to me.
SpoilerCauthon family: yeah I'm not a fan of the changes to the elder Cauthons. On the other hand, I did feel that Mat felt very Mat-like within that dynamic, and his more vice-like behavior (gambling, petty thievery, etc) actually stems from his noble desire to protect and provide for his sisters. I really loved the scene during Winternight when he realizes they're missing, darts outside and sees the carnage, and steels himself to go be a big hero. You can almost see him think "I'm no bloody hero" right before he does it too. Great acting. I'm hoping that when the narrative returns to the TR we see that the elder Cauthons, shamed/inspired by their son, have turned things around.
SpoilerOk, time to talk about the elephant in the room. Perrin and his wife. Hoo boy. So, I don't mind that they created this character for Perrin to be married to. There's also a strain on their relationship or something? They're pretty clearly struggling with something together, which is fine! Even the healthiest relationships will have rough patches. But uh, what that is doesn't get explained and then she gets fridged. This angers me for several reasons. First, it is the year 2021 and we are still killing off women to provide character development for men. Not great! Second, RJ already does this in TSR when he has Whitecloaks kill off Perrin's entire family off screen! They could have repurposed some of them for this! Also does this mean we're going to have a repeat of this dynamic in future seasons? Ugh.
Lastly I'm angry that the scene works. It works! We're told in the books that Perrin is always cautious and afraid of hurting others with his strength, and sure ok, but this SHOWS us why he has very good reason to be afraid of himself and what he might do. It gives his arc (assuming it's somewhat similar) a lot more oomph than it otherwise would. Pretty much everyone in the theater gasped. I gasped and I suspected it was coming! Gah!
That's it for now. Maybe more thoughts after a rewatch Thursday night

Mostly positive review from Polygon. Counter the Gizmodo review, they say the gender divide is absolutely still there, just less rigid and more nuanced. So, I dunno who's right lol. I will say that "too clean" and "bad cgi" was absolutely not my experience with the first two episodes

It's crazy, sometimes when movies come out that are clearly trash, and end up getting horrid reviews, you'll see ads on tv where they flash things like "AMAZING" and "YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE" and in tiny letters it'll show the source, and it is literally just some random twitter user. Whatever helps sell tickets, right?
My favorites are when you go to the source and it's like "amazing this was greenlit" or "you have to see this movie to really appreciate how terrible it is"

Some things I really liked. Gonna put each point under a separate spoiler tag so it's not just a wall of text:
SpoilerThe unnamed male channeler and his "companion". That is some excellent groundwork/foreshadowing, and it definitely freaked out my fiancé
SpoilerLiandrin's lines. I mean, they're bad and I didn't like them, but we're not suppose to like her. My fiancé whispered "what a b--". Mission accomplished
SpoilerRand and Egwene. In the books I never felt like they had a real romantic connection that fell apart, but boy do they here. Incredible chemistry, you feel how much they care for each other, but the cracks are there and you can tell they're probably not going to make it
SpoilerSpeaking of chemistry, the lads! They really felt like three best friends who love and support each other.
SpoilerI really loved the lantern scene. Gives some really nice quick exposition to how the Wheel works that's more show than tell, and it gave us a nice emotional moment between Rand and his dad
SpoilerWinternight. At first I was worried because none of the shots of the Trollocs were in focus and there were a lot of quick cuts, but after a bit (and especially when Moiraine shows up) the camera settles and the cuts become longer. It made me feel like I was one of the villagers, where you're in so much shock initially that you can't focus. Glad they didn't keep it for long though
SpoilerThe Whitecloaks. Eamon Valda especially just oozes evil. Really interested to see how they play their involvement going forward. Loved Moiraine's furious "he's not the only one who won't forget a face from today"
SpoilerBA'ALZAMON! The whole dream sequence was so good, definitely freaked people in the theater out
SpoilerHOPPER!!! I assume it's Hopper at least. Great way to introduce Perrin's affinity with them. Also, we own a German Shepherd whose sire was a Czech wolfdog, and there was definitely a resemblance! She will also try to clean your wounds. My fiancé cooed
SpoilerWasn't too sold on Mashadar right up until it ATE A HORSE HOLY SH-. Definitely spooky. The whole Shadar Logoth design was incredible
SpoilerNYNAEVE IS A MOMMA BEAR AND YOU MESSED WITH HER CUBS. Zoe absolutely nailed it. She is Nynaeve. And if you don't take her to her kids she will slit your throat
Whew, ok, I think I'll take a pause here and do a separate "things I didn't like or have conflicted feelings on" post. It's honestly shorter, which is good!

Spoiler-free thoughts on the actual episodes.
- Everything looks great

- The actors were fantastic
- THAT TITLE SEQUENCE
That is all. I’m all in, even things I didn’t like worked in the larger context. Can’t wait to rewatch Thursday night!

I had a lot of fun. Place was packed. Some people had driven from Connecticut (like 4 hours give or take depending on NYC traffic) and gotten there at 230. Crazy stuff

Alright, I've got 2 hours of stacking firewood ahead of me, if you're going to the Philly/King of Prussia screening, I'll be there. Go Light!

I actually told friends who were interested in the show but didn't want to make a huge time commitment to check out New Spring. It's shorter, has a relatively compact narrative, does a solid job introducing folks to how the universe works, and it's less likely to spoil the tv show story than reading the novels.

Not sure if anyone's watching the various livestreams of the red carpet event in London but there's been a few good interviews with cast and crew so far. I've been bouncing between Dragonmount's and The Dusty Wheel's streams
