S3E2:A Question of Crimson - Discussion
Elder_Haman replied to SinisterDeath's topic in Wheel of Time TV Show
Sure. Totally valid. I just see it as an understandable deviation that will service the ultimate objective of telling Egwene’s story on tv. But I get why that would rankle. -
I think you’re seeing things accurately.

But see, she’ll want it for the right reasons. Not because of institutional inertia, but because she earned it. -

I think this is one of those things that sort of needed to be 'speeded up' for show purposes. Yes, the Amyrlin was built up more in the books as was the whole culture of the Tower. But I think the writers decided that what's more important for show purposes is development of Eggy's character traits. So it was a way to show Eggy's bold, stubborn, smarts that was dramatic precisely because we know the Amyrlin is an authority. And the scene sort of gets to do double duty in showing how little authority Siuan really has right now. -
I see that you are going to deliberately interpret what I said in the most absurd possible way. Of course there are people who would care about missing loved ones. So? Is the Black Ajah not a military group? Since everyone at the wedding is dead, how would they know that 7 women were responsible for the massacre? Where are they getting their information? And why would they assume that a hastily formed mob would be able to succeed in defeating the unknown force that massacred the wedding? No they didn’t. This is a malicious misreading of the text. The village being distrustful and unwelcoming is not “rousing a mob”. This was my point, obviously. Brazen massacres often go unpunished in our world. There’s no reason they can’t in Tanchico.
-
You obviously have no idea what is happening in places like Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Afghanistan and other failed states. Militants will wipe out entire villages. Massacre churches full of people. Is anyone stopping them? Where are the 'mobs' of people demanding justice in those cases?
-
Exactly. The idea that 30 people could be massacred at a wedding and nobody would care isn’t even far fetched in our real world.
-
It might. Nor would it need to.
-
It clearly was. Obviously Moggy will protect her lair. No it doesn’t. It assumes the black has a plan for handling people who come snooping.
-
That was a joke… Neither do you. Maybe so. Or maybe that network would be dissuaded from sending the pigeon because an Aes Sedai (who can’t lie) told them it was being handled.
-
It’s a joke, son.
-
Are there any such authorities? Does Liandrin have any need to worry about them? I suspect we may get answers to these questions.
-
Perhaps a function of the show lifting more dialogue directly from the books this season.

An alternative perspective: Season 3 currently enjoys an 83% fresh audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. (94% with critics) [https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_wheel_of_time/s03] It is also scoring very well on Metacritic, earning a 9.0 audience score. [https://www.metacritic.com/tv/the-wheel-of-time/season-3/] It is second only to Reacher on Amazon: https://www.techradar.com/streaming/amazon-prime-video/the-wheel-of-time-season-3-is-prime-videos-2-show-here-are-3-more-fantasy-series-with-over-85-percent-on-rotten-tomatoes IMDB currently rates it as the 14th most popular streaming show: https://m.imdb.com/chart/tvmeter/?ref_=tt_ov_pop So, I suspect overall viewership will increase as time goes on. -

It's in the last scene of E1. Maybe. Of course, that's assuming (a) that Moggy is correct and (b) that Ishy's oaths are easily broken. After all, the Forsaken are likely tied by far more binding oaths than your average Darkfriend. And -- as the scene also illustrates -- your average Darkfriend doesn't realize this is a loophole that can be exploited. He did say that he is the only Chosen who truly believes in the Dark. But I think he said the Dark One's motivation is to break the Wheel. IIRC, it was Ishy's own interpretation (or motivation) to 'end suffering'. The DO doesn't care about suffering. -
To be fair, there hasn't been too much opportunity to do so. I suspect they'll circle back at some point, now that it's been established as a thing. I have to say that the writing has been doing a very good job of not dropping plot threads. Having said that, where is the dagger? That seems important.

Why on earth do we need to know any of this? -
Right. LMFAO. Because none of these shows had poor writing, a single logical inconsistency, or places where you just have to turn your brain off to enjoy the action.

Yes. I think this is definitely a change to Jordan's theology. (Assuming that both Moggy's statement and my interpretation of it are correct.) Though it is still leaning into a "more theological" aspect of the story, in line with what @Agitel was discussing. -

It would take an awful lot of heavy exposition to do many of these things and I just don't know that that payoff would be worth it. For example, the actual "battle in the sky". What would that even look like? How would you do it in a way that didn't seem incredibly cheesy? (At least they gave it a nod with the drawing Rand sees.) They are leaning more into the idea that the Dark One is a real entity this season. They've introduced the concept of Nae'blis. Moggy disclosed that the consequence of breaking your Oaths to the Dark is a 'true death', which I take to mean being eradicated from the pattern as opposed to being Reborn during another Turning. -
It was in S2. Bain and Chiad basically appeared from nowhere.

S3E2:A Question of Crimson - Discussion

You are really overselling what he is doing here. He isn't rewriting decades of memories. He's implanting one very powerful suggestion: Lord Gaebril has been Queen Morgase's consort for a decade. He later layers that suggestion with other ones when he can interact on a more personal level, such as when he implants the suggestion that he and Elayne used to drink together and complain about Morgase. Maybe people wonder about it later. Or maybe it's a trivial enough detail that it never bothers them later. In any event, so long as he keeps strong layers of suggestion on all the people truly close to Morgase, it will never make a difference. Either way, I still don't understand the need to deconstruct it. -

It’s really not possible to perfectly calibrate the power levels in a show like this. Sometimes it’s more effective to say that the bad guy is able to do something simply because he’s powerful. He’s able to implant false memories. Why does that need to be picked apart further?
