Tolkien would almost certainly have been appalled and hated the Peter Jackson films more than anyone.
The Tolkien estate had no say in the movies and Christopher Tolkien, JRRT’s son, absolutely hated them and was pretty public about it. The sale of the tv series rights to Amazon happened almost immediately after he retired from the board of the estate. I believe C. Tolkien passed away before it was announced.

JRRT famously refused to consider visual adaptation of LotR because he believed it to be "unfilmable" - although I think he wouldn't have been totally disappointed in Peter Jackson's efforts.
Did RJ ever say anything similar about WoT?
Jordan was the one who sold the rights to Red Eagle well before he was sick. In the early 2000s he sold the rights to NBC to make a miniseries from the Eye of the World. Jordan stated several times that if they made something similar to Merlin, he’d be satisfied. I cannot say if he’d approve of this particular adaptation, but he was open to them and seemed to understand changes would be necessary.

I understand. I live in Atlanta. Snow is a terrifying thing for us.
Anyways, let’s get back on topic. What did everyone think about Amalisa? She clearly trained enough to make Accepted if she knew enough to make a link. But the lack of discipline that led to her losing control of the circle is clearly why she didn’t go further.

Rand wanders into the waste looking for his real mother.
It's got potential.
I don’t hate it? I mean, if we are going to change everything anyways, why not?

It’s insanely expensive to digitally replace an actor like that. It’s possible, because it’s been done. You are probably thinking of that zombie heist movie that was on Netflix awhile ago. They recast a minor, but pivotal character after the movie had been shot. It’s really obvious that she’s not really onset with any of them. The lighting on her is different, she’s not matted the same as the others. And this is in a big budget movie with an A list director. So while it’s an interesting thought exercise, it was extremely unlikely that they’d attempt it for this series.

We have plenty of threads for this already.

This article is actually illuminating. How can we make season 2 about moiraine and lan as rosamund pike is so big an actress we cant sideline her.
I think that’s a really good point. You don’t cast someone of her stature and then sideline her for the season. That might be why “Moiraine is the main character” became a thing.

This was posted in the Articles and Interviews thread, but I think it belongs here too. Rafe clarifies the intention behind some of what we saw and that Moiraine really is stilled and not just shielded.
-
Huh. So they really did still Moiraine. I don’t think I like that.

I just removed a bunch of low effort, name calling and bickering posts. If you don’t have anything left to say about the episode anymore, go kill time somewhere else. I think the NORAD Santa tracker is up and running already.
The Friends/WoT mash up fanfic may continue.

So something I liked was Fain. He seemed really menacing and dangerous.

I noticed the Seanchean channelers didn't seem to be collared and chained now. Not a ground breaking change but something I noticed. Maybe the giant pacifier controls them or the gold breast plate. I am a little confused about what causing a giant tidal wave on what appeared to be a largely uninhabited beach was suppose to accomplish. I think instead of just a little girl the scene should of been from the POV of the people in Falme seeing this come in at them.
I need to go back and look again, but I think I saw collars and bracelets as well. Anyone got a screenshot?

I want to take a moment to give credit and kudos to @JenniferL for starting to steer the discussion somewhere that isn't just blind outrage regardless of her own personal feelings on the episode.
All I want here is a decent discussion. If I wanted a bunch of screaming and insults, I’d go on twitter or Facebook.

Taking away from Rand his first iconic scene was utterly disappointing, i really have no words to explain how bad this is and how the distrust is high for the rest of the series.
I am okay with changing how Rand battles Ishy. The end of the book doesn’t really match much of what gets established later. You can tell Jordan rethought some things as he was working.

So one of the things that didn’t work for me was the reveal of the Horn. I don’t mind that they changed the hiding place. It’s a logical consequence of changing the nature of the Eye. But I don’t like that it’s just sitting there under Agelmar’s throne and everyone seems to know about it. In three thousand years, they never had a “oh no, we’re all going to die” moment? What about when Malkier fell? No one thought they should use it then? It would have been better if it had been hidden in the keep, but no one knew about it and some combination of the EF5 discovered it while wandering around. Or maybe Loial happens to know it’s there and asks someone why they aren’t pulling it out? ??♀️

So there’s many individual moments from this episode that I enjoyed. But it never felt like it came together cohesively and most of the not Rand stuff just didn’t land for me.
