Once again you say he failed at his job.  He scouted the Whitecloaks, saw they were coming towards the party and gave Moiraine enough warning to prepare.  In the situtation, as shown, what would you have had Lan done different?

As a book cloak myself, I can confidently say Lan would have been scouting FAR ahead and provided the group an opportunity to totally avoid the white cloaks.  Jordan wrote Lan that way.

  2. Late add to the party here.  I watched the season finale on time but holiday plans and some time off in Northern Minnesota allowed me a bit of peace and quiet at the expense of sharing my thoughts here.

There are so many things I was disappointed in.....  The lost horn of valere under a chair and half the town of Fal Dara knows where it is?  So many threads tied to the horn being missing.  How does Faile enter the picture?

Aglemar gets skewered as an individual combatant?  Wasn't he one of the great captains?  He put down his baton didn't he?

I honestly don't care that Loial got the shiv.  He's been useless in this series except for magically finding people in Tar Valon.

Perrin is now following the way of the leaf and continues to be useless.

More useless Lan.  Why would the showrunners even keep him in the story?  His romance with Nynaeve in the books is a minor plotline anyhow (all things considered).  The Nynaeve they've created in the series clearly doesn't need him.

Rand is gifted a sangreal just in time for a dream sequence and a 13 second fight with Ishy.  Moraine just happens to have one with her on this trip.  Something incredibly rare.  He doesn't have to earn anything.  His only 'win' is realizing that Egwene doesn't want to be a housewife.

    Bah....

For all of the posters on here who are hardcore book fans and are criticizing the show and actively finding things to dislike about it, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of other hard-core book fans who don't post here but are expressing their overall positive thoughts and feelings on the show elsewhere, so there is nowhere close to a universal dislike of the show amongst the hardcore reader community.

There isn't even a universal dislike of the show amongst the people who do post here.

And?  Do you think I don't know I'm in the minority here and in general?

This is true. But the repetitiveness of his dialogue got annoying for me.

Agreed.  The dream scene with the rats and then seeing the rats in the morning was great.  After that it just got boring.  One of only a few issues I have with the books.   Aes Sedai plotting about plotting is another.

Or conversely they may have an increased propensity to dislike it due to pre-conceived notions of what it should be or inflated expectations of scale or quality.

Fair point.  In my case I got it but didn't like it.  Drives me crazy when they add stuff and at the same time delete stuff because they don't have enough time.

Not enough time to show the Perrin stedding scene?  O.K., lets have Perrin be married and kill his wife to show his conflict instead.  Puke.

I only hope this episode can balance all the action and make it impactful.  Usually shows don't introduce so many new elements in their final episode.  Here we still dont know much about Ishamael yet.  Having the LTT prologue, age of Legends montage, Padan Fain recap, Tarwins gap battle, Eye of the world battle, Forsaken, horn of valere/banner/seals, cliffhangers, etc. Its going to be ALOT, and that's not even counting green man being in there

    Don't tease me.

If you are going to try and use Dragonmount as a sampling.. No.  This place is specifically home to book fans and more so dedicated book fans, which is not an even sampling of the show's audience or the population as a whole.  It's stacking the deck, which is dishonest from a statistics standpoint.

Exactly!  When a group of people invested in the material don't get it or don't like it, something is REALLY wrong.  The subset of people posting on this forum had the highest probability of getting it or liking it!  The fact that a noticeable amount of us didn't is doubly damning.

Fal Dara looks nice, the White Tower just seemed really empty.  All the time there and it never really seemed all that impressive.

Thinking back on it, the rooms in the white tower seemed too small.  Not quoting dimensions from the books or anything, they just didn't seem fitting (or lived in).

What is the number that is "A significant number of viewers"

A quick glance lists WoT as the most watched this year for Amazon and in their top 5 period.  VS the numbers that actually spoke up or even just gave a score in RT or such.

People like us on these forums?  Heck, even people who actually go give reviews.  We're a minority.  We're not the majority, we're not even a significant overall number.  For everyone of us here making our opinions known there's another 10 or more that aren't saying a word.

Are you familiar with the concept of sampling a population?

And before you ask, I don't have actual statistics.  On this particular topic, I don't think they are readily available.  However, the folks on this forum have at least demonstrated an investment in the material (book and TV).  For a recognizably large portion of THIS audience to have trouble with the scene should be concerning to those who created the scene.  There was a misfire somewhere.

Does that include reviewers who had not read the books? I only saw this from book readers, because many of us are struggling to understand why they introduced this, although we had hints to it before

The various suggestions are to resolve this, but tbh we have to wafo

I haven't seen any reviews from non-readers criticising this scene iirc

Candidly I'm referring to the write ups on this thread and one or two youtube videos.

Also, I was going to quote directly but couldn’t find it, I think someone said “this isn’t a David Lynch movie”, but I’m not sure what that point is supposed to make because the dream sequences could definitely use some more David Lynch surrealism. Sign me up.

found it* “This isn't Mulholland Drive”, that’s David Lynch right?

Just that this show isn't (or shouldn't) be trying to be that deep.

If your defense is "Lots of people agree" instead of an actual discussion of the point itself that's a sign.

Maybe my memory is faulty but I think the vast majority of reviewers that mentioned that scene had a problem with it.  I don't remember any that thought is was great (on their initial review).  Many have explained it or clarified how they thought it went down but I don't remember anyone initially loving it.

Audience reaction to entertainment IS a measure of success.   It's certainly not the only measure but it is a valid measure.

In my review, I called it a triangle because I didn't have a better description.  It seemed out of character for Nynaeve as the village wisdom to make such a mistake (and to apologize).  The biggest reason I didn't like it was because until Rand put on his 'Lord' coat in tGH, the three seemed to trust each other implicitly.  A great moment in the book was Perrin tweaking Egwene by mentioning Aram.  This scene certainly didn't feel like that.

The lore details are different, but the thematic elements--incomplete information and trusting in the pattern--are the same. The lore around the Eye of the World is a mess in the books. It's no surprise they simplified it for the show.

Simplified?  That's being kind.  We have barely heard about the dark one.  Yes, the dark one is mentioned but it's not the menacing presence as in the book. Why even bother using the source material as a source?  Write a new story.
