I'll say this Kronos- there are a lot of times when I or others throw out specific scumtells, stuff like whyme fryme, AtE, or Buddying, but honestly it's not that scumhunters who say that stuff are just following a scripted set of scumtells to find scum. Many times someone's posts just feel off, so you'll throw out some terms like that to support your fos, but the heart of the fos itself is instinct and trying to read people.

And this is where newer or inexperienced players actually have a bit of an edge a lot of times in fact. More experienced players can easily fall into wifom circles and self-doubt after being wrong so many times lol. Newer players can rely on instinct more confidently. So don't be afraid to vocalize your thoughts on who you think is scum- even if you dont use some of the same fancy phrases and stuff, you still may be seeing something others aren't. That's why it's so important for players to add their thoughts- not only does it allow others to get a read on you, but it allows you to give a potentially fresh perspective on something that can help others see more. The more you play the more comfortable you'll get with using certain lingo and looking for specific things.

So in summation, three things to try in future games:

1. Never be afraid to be wrong

2. Never be afraid to ask questions

3. Don't think your perspective is worth less than anyone else's- you may see something no one else does

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Doesn't hurt to be cheerful :)

WBK.

A mantra that helped me while coaching baseball.

"You will fail sometimes when you try.  You will always fail when you don't."

So, just throw stuff out there and see what sticks.  Heck..that's what despo does.

You will learn to fine tune your arguments as you get positive and negative feedback from the other players.

this is one I use for dental appointments and if I'd ever had to or have to, I think it would have worked for labor -

whatever happens, this will be over soon.

also I premedicate.

Lol I'm not sure that should really be your approach to a fun game like mafia... but eh to each their own

Hey everyone.  On a bit of a mafia break right now but I was bored so I checked the forum.  As for the original topic, I agree that flaming/personal attacks are not cool and make the game torturous.  That being said, I've seen a lot of people who react negatively to any sort of aggressiveness whatsoever, and I think that hurts the game as well.  It's a competitive game about killing the other team.  It's gonna get competitive.  Just make sure everything is in the spirit of competition and not personal.

As for policy lynches, I think they're kinda meh as are most policies in mafia.  Any time you adopt a hardline stance, the mafia will abuse it.  The key is to discourage unwanted behavior while remaining unpredictable.  Myself, I like the idea of lynching someone for things I consider anti-town behavior, even if it's not "scummy" per se.  Not only does it discourage anti-town behavior, but it tends to net mafia.

As for how to play as a confused newbie, just go all out.  It's a game.  Try to win, but don't stress too much about it.

Be bloody, bold, and resolute; laugh to scorn the power of lynch.

Popped back in to see what's up so figured I'd throw my 2 cents in. Do to OP I agree that flaming and personal attacks can ruin and game and instead of being about logical arguments turns it into a who insulted the other first kinda thing. But as Wombat said though there are also the people who can't take any pressure/aggressive play in there direction at all and that can also ruin a game because it's the aggressive that kicks things into gear.

For policy lynchs I'm indifferent. I don't think they are going to do much unless everyone starts doing them, but I agree with the idea behind it.

To many spoilers. Def scum. Lynch now.

Oh and as a newbie I say just do stuff and have fun. If it's your first few games just do things and see how people react to them. You'll learn what works for you and what doesn't.
