The Cavs are the best, most awesome and fun-filled regiment in the Band! And we have the best drinks. *nodnod*

:p You'll hear more about the Cavs while you're on rotation with us. I'll see if I can uphold an air of mystery until then XD

My brother has all of those books you just said. One day I'll get through them all. I love reading too, but I haven't been able to do much this year. Well, up until these holidays. I've read a looooooot these holidays XD

Hiya Aidanna!

I'm BB, LG of the Cavalry.   :)

I see no-one's topped you up for a while-have another Bandy...or seven.

I just finished the Final Empire! It's great, despite the fact that my favourite died yet again XD

Nice to see you join the Band!

Nice to meet you BB!

I don't know the Final Empire - I will have to check it out. Sorry your favorite died - that happens to me with Song of Ice and Fire - I think every book one of my favorite people gets maimed or killed!

That's the great thing with SoIaF though, there's always a new favourite waiting in the background, although there are some places I won't let GRRM lead me with pity and sympathy.

Sighs, he'll get me there eventually.

Posted

So only because we are talking about it now (I am sure there is a thread on here about SoIaF) but BFG- have you read them all? Do you have any theories? And yes, GRRM will probably get you there eventually.

Posted

Yes, there are a couple in the general discussion boards and a couple that cover the tv series when that's on.

I'll assume you've read all the books so...

As for theories, I'm not great at new ones.  I did come to the standard one about Jon (fairly early on) on my own which I was quite proud of, other than that just a few about Dany, I think the betrayals will be done by her and not to her, Frogboy dying in the east has to do with Mirrirs curse, oh and Jons alive - although I really hope that it doesn't follow that it releases him from the NW vow.

Posted

Oh yes I have read them all - and I have watched the show. My mother and I both came to the Jon conclusion on our on too, but in general it sounds like you have similar thoughts to things as I do. Although I kinda think Jon needs to take back the North, and be King, and the only way he can do that is if he is released from the NW. But that's just me

Care for another flaming shot?

My favourite sort of RR!

I'm always happy to take flaming shots and share them.

And for people still reading SoIaF spoilers...

I agree that Jon taking the north is one of the two logical conclusions, the other is that he and Dany end together, but they both seem (almost) cliché somehow.  Although it's possibly the only series where I'd consider dying to be an easy option.  In the back of my head is a quote from GRRM saying that the ending will be bittersweet, and I won't be unhappy if Jon gets released from his vows, it just doesn't seem in keeping with the rest of the book - Jon is now very aware that the serious threat is from North of the Wall, I don't see him abandoning the wall to partake in politics to the south.

OUt of curiosity, do you think Dany will ever make it to Westeros?  Aegon is real?

I have read a lot of Sanderson's stuff, you should read the Way of Kings - it's pretty great and since you like WoT, you would probably enjoy it. I haven't read the one with a 17 year old schizophrenic detective, but that sounds awesome! I will have to check it out. What else have you read?

I loved the Way of Kings! I just finished it maybe a month ago while I was still on the ship. After reading Sanderson's works for the trilogy finale of the Wheel of Time I decided to look into his other stuff as well. I've read all 4 of his Mistborn books and The Way of Kings. I can't wait for the next book in the series to get here. Sanderson is easily one of my favorite authors.

This was a discussion my family had earlier this week - to me it seems she should make it back. As a representation of the series actually being the epic song revolving around the concept of Ice and Fire, I feel that GRRM is using Jon as Ice, and Dany as Fire. Personally just because I am a sucker for the epic battle stuff, I think the dragons swooping in to save the wall would be awesome.

On the other hand I am not sure what to think about Aegon... It was a surprise twist, and along with other little surprises GRRM has added along the way, it makes me wonder what else he wants to add in, or who else might come back from the dead or whatever.

I honestly picked up Sanderson's work just prior to finding out that he was taking over WoT - I read a lot and needed a new author to try out and picked up Elantris. I hadn't read it though and when I heard about WoT I decided to read his stuff to get used to his style so that the transition from RJ wouldn't be as rough for me. I read the first three Mistborn. The stand alone trilogy I really enjoyed and it ended so well, I haven't read the 4th. I read Elantris, and liked the idea of the hero that he portrayed. When he wrote WoK I was honestly blown away. I think the The Stormlight Archive could be for Sanderson what Wot was for RJ or LotR was for Tolkein. I think it was awesome. I am excited for the next one as well.

I was wondering about Aegon a little because of the mummers dragon seen in the House of the Undying, but I think he's a fake, it seems late in the game to be introducing the 'real' Targaryen heir, especially as Dany has the Dragons.  It's possible that he'll spur her movement to Westeros tho.

I've only read Elantris by Sanderson outside of WoT, there were bits I liked and some, not so much.  Despite the forum, the fantasy I prefer is generally low level magic whereas Sanderson seems to prefer complex magic systems, so I love GRRM, Hobbs, Butchers Codex (books 1-4, after which it's a bit more meh), etc...

I'm really rough on books, so I only like a few authors....*looks shifty*

Well don't keep us hanging...  :)  Who do you like?  Not like?

I couldn't agree more on the Stormlight Archive. I think it's going to become my new favorite long running series. I would also strongly recommend The Alloy of Law. If you enjoyed the Mistborn trilogy then you'd like this one as well.

Exactly! You gotta tell us.

And the band is all about music too right? What kinds of music does everyone like?

I have the alloy of law on my nook - its on the list... It's kind of a long list though.

Haha I totally understand. It's a bit quick pace wise but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I think Sanderson adapted to the new era really well when it came to Allomancy. It sort of feels like a Sherlock Holmes story but with an original magic system.

Excellent point.

I generally like folk/something else bands, or roots, indy, occasional 70s cheese...  I like bands like Flogging Molly, The Shins, Kings of Leon, (for me) the classic Oasis, Blur, but at the moment (and for quite a while now) my favourite band is the John Butler Trio (I wish they toured Europe more).

Well both lists are kind of long so I'll give just a few. *G*

Like: Tolkien, Jordan, Elizabeth Peters, Kelly gay, Shakespeare, Butcher, (I love the Dresden Files)

Don't like: Rowling (sorry wasn't a fan of HP) Martin, Sanderson, Bishop, Collins, Whoever wrote the 50 shades books...HATE those novels. I forget his name the guy who wrote Percy Jackson. Erm the list could go on awhile. *G*

It was hard to admit, but Sanderson actually replaced Jordan as my favorite author. The only reason why WoT is still my favorite series is because the Stormlight Archive is short a dozen books to be able to properly compare. So far!

When I read Mistborn (my first Sanderson taste), it became my favorite set of books, although not my favorite series since it is only three books. Then Sanderson came and changed it up in an awesome way in Alloy... I can't wait to see how the other two Mistborn trilogies turn out!

Haha - i know what you mean -- I originally read Sanderson so that the transition from RJ to a completely different author would totally upset me. While I was getting used to his writing style, I really found that the way he introduces completely different and new magic styles was something that I totally enjoyed. Sanderson is definitely one of my favorite authors now. I think that reading his stuff prior to his writing the WoT really made the transition easy for me, so I enjoyed everything more.

Awesome music - John Butler Trio is great. I love Flogging Molly and Kings of Leon too. I listen to everything, but I really am into similar stuff right now. I have to look at stuff on my Pandora for names - I am so bad with names.

I am always into classic rock stuff - my parents were hippies and I went to concerts and was surrounded by great rock music constantly while I was growing up.

*grin* It is so awesome you love Butcher - especially Dresden files. I know a lot of people who don't, just because it is set in our world, I think they are great fun!

MORE DRINKS!!

You guys are awesome!

Really???? Weird I love the books because they are set in our time and yet he still connects to the supernatural.

Every time my phone or tv wont work, or my car acts funny, I act like it's because my magic is too powerful and is incompatible with the technology

I wish I had that excuse, but (to switch terminology) I can't help but feel I'm muggle through and through.  Just a muggle that's out of date with technology wizardry.

It's great that you like The John Butler Trio, the only other people I know that like them are ones that I've forcibly sat down, tied to a chair and said listen to this.  They all agree after, so it's all good

I've been considering taking up the Dresden Files. I was looking at them the other day at B&N but didn't buy  I've heard a lot of goodness about them.

They're a lot of fun and get better as they go along!  Off the top of my head I don't recall a slow or boring book, the characters grow and change and that stops the books from being boring or too samey.
