I was also introduced to the joys of candied bacon recently.  I'll have to make a batch for the annual church cook-off my parents go to just to see how it goes over.

I stumbled across this combination on an Americana blog and my dad more or less confirmed that it was "a thing" in the 50's.  I've always liked the two but I never thought to try them together.

My mom has this weird thing about Vernor's ginger ale and I never understood it growing up but the first time I tried it on a trip back east, I knew and understood.  Canada Dry is ginger ale for when your ill, Vernors is ginger ale you drink to enjoy.



There aren't many places to find it in the Great Semi-Arid Shrubland I call home so it's always a treat whenever we do find it.

My sister found a recipe for "monkey bread."  It's basically a buttered bread cooked in cinnamon batter with pecans and almonds.

 

 

It tastes like diabetes.

Mulled wine, spiced cider and glögg or any sort of warm alcoholic drink that isn't a variation of coffee and whiskey.



There are a lot of different ways to make this and I have a few recipes I've picked up but if I'm lazy I want some in a pinch, heating a strong wine in your coffee maker and mixing it with an apple cider mix also works.  Purists might scoff but the effect is the same; spicy wine that warms from the inside out.  The trick is to keep it from boiling - as you approach boiling temperatures, the alcohol will steam off and you're left with a very peculiar grape drink.  Coffee makers never approach the temperatures that alcohol will evaporate at, so you're golden and soon to be lush.

Have I ever told you I'm a compulsive cook book collector?  Small talk is the portal through which we interact with the world but good food opens the door.

I don't actually go to their church - I just show up for the picnics. ;;>_>

 

Each year, they have a men's cook-off and all the women judge the dishes. You can tell it's a men's cook-off because all the main courses involve meat and none of the sides are vegetables. Either I've gotten into the spirit of things or the "men can't cook" jibes have gotten under my skin but I am seriously ready to bust out a full course meal.
