That song is definitely WoT-ish. So is Pink Floyd's "Shine on you Crazy Diamond." "Black holes in the sky" could describe Dark Rand's eyes. Stranger, legend, martyr.... the last line of each stanza throws in a few words and pretty much all of them could describe Rand. And "random precision" just screams ta'verenness to me. Faraway laughter, of course, could be the Forsaken. I don't know if RJ listened to them at all, but the song sure fits.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

You were caught in the cross fire of childhood and stardom.

Blown on the steel breeze.

Come on you target for faraway laughter.

Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Well you wore out your welcome with random precision.

Rode on the steel breeze.

Come on you raver, you seer of visions.

Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there.

Shine on you crazy diamond.

And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,

sail on the steel breeze.

Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,

come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine

I also think "Hey You" has just a tiny bit of WoT flavor to it. And, while we're on Bob Dylan, how about "The Times They are a-Changin'"? That's what's going on throughout the series! And David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World" reminds me of when Ishy was first starting to bother Rand.

“He is born again! I feel him! The Dragon takes his first breath on the slopes of Dragonmount! He is coming! He is coming! Light help us! Light help the world! He lies in the snow and cries like the thunder! He burns like the sun!

Yep. Very similar. Plus, that was when he was young.

How about Star Wars?

Rand al'Thor is Luke Skywalker. He's powerful in the "force" (One Power). He's an orphan, who's mother died giving birth to him (though he doesn't have a twin sister). He wields a sword of light. He loses his hand.

Then there's the whole rebel army bit.

I know a lot of people will dismiss them as poppy-whatever, but Crawling and Papercut by Linkin Park is definately Jordan and Rand based (and came out way after):

Crawling:

Crawling in my skin

These wounds, they will not heal

Fear is how I fall

Confusing what is real

There's something inside me that pulls beneath the surface

Consuming, confusing

This lack of self control I fear is never ending

Controlling

I can't seem

To find myself again

My walls are closing in

(Without a sense of confidence I’m convinced that there’s just too much pressure to take)

I've felt this way before

So insecure

Discomfort, endlessly has pulled itself upon me

Distracting, reacting

Against my will I stand beside my own reflection

It's haunting how I can't seem...

To find myself again

My walls are closing in

(Without a sense of confidence I’m convinced that there’s just too much pressure to take)

I've felt this way before

So insecure

And Papercut (which I see a definate Rand/Ishy resemblance to):

Why does it feel like night today?

Something in here's not right today.

Why am I so uptight today?

Paranoia's all I got left

I don't know what stressed me first

Or how the pressure was fed

But I know just what it feels like

To have a voice in the back of my head

It's like a face that I hold inside

A face that awakes when I close my eyes

A face watches every time I lie

A face that laughs every time I fall

(And watches everything)

So I know that when it's time to sink or swim

That the face inside is hearing me

Right underneath my skin

It's like I'm paranoid lookin' over my back

It's like a whirlwind inside of my head

It's like I can't stop what I'm hearing within

It's like the face inside is right beneath my skin

I know I've got a face in me

Points out all my mistakes to me

You've got a face on the inside too and

Your paranoia's probably worse

I don't know what set me off first but I know what I can't stand

Everybody acts like the fact of the matter is

I can't add up to what you can but

Everybody has a face that they hold inside

A face that awakes when I close my eyes

A face watches every time they lie

A face that laughs every time they fall

(And watches everything)

So you know that when it's time to sink or swim

That the face inside is watching you too

Right inside your skin

The face inside is right beneath your skin

The sun goes down

I feel the light betray me
