One thing I have long been wondering is whether Mordeth had escaped from Shadar Logoth before he caught Padan Fain, since as I recall Moiraine had some detailed information about Mordeth being able to steal the bodies of those whom he lured beyond the walls. Has anyone ever asked in any of the interviews whether Mordeth had escaped Shadar Logoth before?

The host body dies maybe? The Aes Sedai had to have found out somehow and the most obvious answer is that he has been out before. Of course, being an obvious answer its probably wrong

I'm sure the browns would of studied shadar lodgoth. Also what did the really know about it? Moraine was like oh it's evil, heck the trollocs knew that.

If host body died, I guess Mordeth would have also died.

 

The most recent time (before the series) of anyone/anything entering Shadar Logoth I take to be Trolloc Wars. And none of those came out alive.

there is no reason to believe that Mordeth ever got out before. His POVs never hint at anything of the sort. and he could only get out while carrying some physical object like the dagger with him. Even if you believe that Fain's soul would somehow fleet back to SH after the previous host body died the physical object used to escape would remain outside and continue spreading SL contamination forever. nothing like that is ever mentioned to have happened.

sorry, you are right. For some reason I was sure that taking an object from SH was necessary but I just double-checked how it's described in tEoTW and it doesn't seem to be the case.

Still, I don't believe Mordeth has escaped before as nothing of the sort is mentioned anywhere including his POVs.

But she said something to the effect that if he lured someone beyond the walls he could possess them or somesuch. I have always been curious how she knew that, did a Brown once come to Shadar Logoth and say "Was up? Did you gain any gnarly powers since that whole evil consuming the entire city thing?" I do not really see that as particularly likely, nor do I think he would give an honest answer to such a question. But yes, there is no evidence that he ever escaped which has long begged the question to me of how Moiraine could possibly have known that Mordeth could escape let alone the manner in which he could.

There is the possibility of someone else escaping. When they ran afoul of Mordeth, on their way back to find Moirane they decided to avoid buildings and shadows because they were full of ghosts, so it is possible that someone else got out, by having their body possessed and their soul consumed.

Perhaps he has escaped in the past and Ta'vern were raised to put him back in Shadar Logoth. Also, I suspect during one of his escapes he birthed Amadicia.
