Silmarillion is where it's at. Also Tom Bombadil being Maglor does seem to fit considering that the last that was seen of Maglor was that he was singing walking along the beaches not entirely within his wits anymore. Then Tom Bombadils wife magically happens to be a Maiar of the Sea.

I tried the Silmarillion and got bored shortly after Morgoth's fall. I'll give it another go eventually. Right now I'm taking a course on LotR so maybe after that's done.

First 100 pages are Terribad. Only gets better once the Noldor host lands on Beleriand. The Silmarillion is simply dark and depressing to the point that you wonder if the same author who wrote LotR fathered both books.

Also Turin from the Silmarillion was apparently awesome enough to get his own epic expanded in an autonomous book. Albeit again pretty dark considering that the protagonist ends up driving his sister to suicide and in the end decides to also painfully commit suicide himself by falling upon his upright turned blade. No amount of happy go frolicking hobbits going to cheer that one up.

I always meant to read Silmarillion but never got 'round to it. Lots of books like that, actually, yet I still read too much for my own good.
