the kids are always escorted around here. i live on an isolated dirt road, so i only see the kids i know most years, but sometimes a carful will be driven up. and sometimes the kids i know bring others, so i'm always well stocked. i only give out the good stuff.

the chocolate halloween house is super easy to make, and whether you celebrate it or not, it's a fun day project for anyone who likes chocolate.

you just build it with the biggest block chocolate bars you can find. i usually use giant hershey bars, they go on sale for the holiday. use melted chocolate chips for mortar. the bars are nice and square so they go together easily into any houselike shape.

i build it on a cookie sheet. at the end i either pave the ground with chocolate bars, or some other candy, or a bunch of different kinds of squares of chocolate for cobblestones, stuck on with the melted chocolate, or i spread everything with chocolate frosting and sprinkle it with crushed oreos to make it look like dirt. then you can use tombstone shaped candy to make a little graveyard. decorate the house with any and all kinds of candy, stuck on wih the same melted chocolate.

we let it show for a few days until after halloween, and then the kids smash it with hammers, and freeze little bags of shashed house for munching as allowed.

gummy worms are an absolute requirement i have learned. everything else is up to personal taste. but the gummy worms must be there.

chocolate covered gummy bears came first, but the discovery of the chocolate gummy combination was perhaps more momentous even than the discovery of the chocolate peanut butter equation. and chocolate gummy worms. well.

but these are easily made at home if one can obtain the gummy and any chocolate to melt.

just melt the chocolate slowly with a tiny bit of butter or margerine, or if it's cool out, oil. use two forks to dip and remove the worms form the choclate bath - work quickly, and perhaps pre-chill the gummies in the fridge to stave off meltinig.

place on a wax paper, plastic, or foil covered plate or cookie sheet to set, in the fridge if necessary.

and done.
