Hello class and welcome to Life in the Universe. The book I will be posting notes out of today is the 3rd edition of The Search for Life in the Universe by David Goldsmith and Tobias Owen

 

(I like taking notes on here. It helps the spam and I actually process it better--not to mention it's easier to read later)

People have always wondered about life in the stars, and with (relatively) recent discoveries that our star is one in countless numbers of stars, our galaxy is one in trillions, and that there's similar planets to ours, it seems all the more likely that there is possibly life somewhere else in the universe

but, because of great distances in spaces, it is very possible that we are isolated from an neighbors, though perhaps radio signals could allow us to find them

But first, to understand how and where life can possibly exist other places in the universe, we need to understand how life originated here on earth

the ocean floor seemed like a good place to start looking for life, so the ship the Challenger started systematically dragged the ocean floor. It is believed that the deepest parts of the ocean haven't changed much since the Each was formed. Eventually they found some "ooze" which they thought might have been the origin of life--but this slime ended up being completely inanimate.

We have not found any record of the earliest life on earth, and have concluded geological records of Earth's first half billion years have vanished due to erosion and movement of the tectonic plates--making it impossible to find fossil evidence which reveals how life formed on earth

there are currently two methods to attempt to figure out how life formed on earth: one is recreating it in a lab, th other is flocking for examples in nature. The first has actually been somewhat successful (but that's a lesson for a different day) and as for the second... we must go to other planets to find this since record of it on earth is gone
