hi , im new to the WOT community, but i love this series a lot.i was just rereading TGH n i thought why did Liandrin kidnap egwene and the others? just as a bait to bring rand, or is there dark prophecy involved?maybe the shadow knows how far the wonder girls would foil their plans, so they thought y nt just b done with them?

She was told to do so by Ba'alzamon in the prologue (The Darkfriend social). The idea was probably to give Rand a harder time in Falme (as the dagger would already lure him to Falme).

Kidnap seems to be the wrong term since she used persuasion and since they went willingly.

Kidnapping would be using force and it being done against their will.

Take/Took might be more accurate.

The reason seems to relate to what Liandrin done afterward between the books.

Because the wheel wills as the wheel wills. The pattern needed it to happen so that Rand would have a reason strong enough to need to go back to Falme amongst a pending battle between Seanchan and Whitecloaks. If he didn't see her there and collared he wouldn't have gone back, the battle in the sky wouldn't have happened, Maesema(sp?) would not have started his Prophet role (bummer) and Perrin would not have been sent off to find him, Faile wouldn't have been captured(double bummer), Rand wouldn't have been wounded or been branded the second time, the Return would not have been delayed, and a host of other things wouldn't have happened which would have effected yet other things. Dude! What an intricate web!

Then why not just kill them?

Don't answer that. I know why. Because the Darkfriends in this series are like James Bond villians, always devising unnecessarilly complicated plots that allow the heroes to escape.

To me, it seemed that the Shadow/Ishamael was looking for a way to influence Rand. By capturing (not killing) the girl that he had been almost betrothed to, and the woman that had been the Wisdom of his village, it could have possibly given him leverage over Rand's emotions. It seemed as though Ishy was trying to gain an item of leverage to use against Rand and the girls were the leverage that was most accessible because of the BA in the Tower (which were completely under Ishy's control at this point). He might have preferred Tam or one of the other Ta;veren , but he settled for Eggy and Nyn because he could get to them easiest of all the strings that could bind Rand to him.We have to remeber that especially at this point in the story Ishy wanted to convert Rand to the Shadow as opposed to killing him or giving him a reason (by killing those Rand cared about) to completely reject everything the Shadow represents.

If they died, Rand would have taken up the cause of 'VENGEANCE AGAINST THE SHADOW', which would have been totally counter productive to Ishy's goals.

Except that if they died, there is only one dude who can bring them back. And that same dude can hold them in eternal torment if he pleases. That seems to me to be pretty serious leverage.
