Rand Dying

Heya, this is my first time posting but i had to ask this...

I haven't searched extensively so excuse me if this has been proposed a zillion times before but in the prologue of ToM, in the part where Fain is cruising through the Blight, he creates some zombies to put it bluntly.

Kills the trollocs and turns them into Zombies... Could it be possible that this is what the prophecy is talking about when it says that Rand has to die to live? MAYBE, Fains part to play in the last battle it to turn Rand into Zombie Rand, 'Killing him' and then using him against the DO/pattern to cause an awful upset? dunno how Alivia is going to help this happen, maybe by not stopping it when given the chance but meh.

Thoughts?

I reckon he will lure the Dark One into possessing him when he breaks the Seals, he'll do it by channeling the True Power. I think the true Last Battle, Rands "fight" with the Dark One, will be to hold as much of the Dark One/True Power in him as he can and wait until Narishma can stab him with Callandor. Callandor will deliver the weave to sever the portion of the Dark One Rand has in him from the rest of the Dark One, as in, severing the connection Shaidar Haran mentioned. Narishma delivers the flow, severs the connection and kills Rand with Callandor and so the part of the Dark One/True Power in Rand dies with him; the Dark One is too weak to touch the Pattern, the Bore gets Sealed by remaining channelers, and it takes an Age or full turning of the Wheel to get back round to next time, where the Dark One can touch the Pattern enough to cause long winters again.

He'll wake up and he'll be married to Roseanne!! They'll win the lottery!!!

Or maybe he'll wake up next to Suzanne Pleshette...

It's a not uncommon theme in tv shows - Buffy did it, kind of, and apparently St Elsewhere kind of did it.

The Matrix, of course, made it into a major plot point.

I am sure there are fantasy/sci fi books like that - I know that there some where the main character has to figure out what is real and what isn't, but I don't know of any that just have a big "haha, fooled you" in the last chapter.

Now I don't know if babuada is being serious.

I hate those endings...so...much...hate!

Could you name any other book with a similar ending? So that I can avoid them?

Can't think of any books, but like AutoTeller said, many tv shows as well as a few movies over the years have done it.

It just seems like a cop-out when they can't think of a decent ending.

To be fair, Buffy had it in one episode (where it was also a major plot point, rather similar to The Matrix). It's not like they used it because they couldn't figure out a good ending :P

I don't know about Zombie Rand, though that would be cool..

Consider the following from the re-read:

-However, his “joke” about Rand is notable for being yet another Christ/Messiah/Resurrection reference, and I’ve always considered these, plus the remarks about Nynaeve not being satisfied until she “Heals someone three days dead” to be Big Honking Clues re: this whole prophetic flurry of Alivia helping Rand die/to live you must die/paper puppet on a funeral bier/he who is dead yet lives/blood on the rocks/etc.

My link

So we've seen a reference to not believing Rand is dead until he's been three days on the pier. We've seen it said that Nynaeve will not be be satisfied until she's Healed someone three days dead. We've seen lots of prophetic imagery about Rand being dead or seeming to be dead but not being quite dead or living again. We've seen prophecy of Nynaeve griefing over someone on a funeral pier (which many have assumed would be Lan but I'm thinking could be Rand). Wasn't there also something about people building a funeral pier and moarning for someone that actually just needs to be Healed?

Basically I think that Rand will "die" during the Resealing of the Bore, that all three of of girlfriends will live to see him "dead" on a boat taking him to where is funeral will be, that Nyn. will be at his funeral weeping over his body, and that while she is mad/upset over him being dead she will Dealve his body and find out that there is in fact a spark of life, and it will be just enough for him to "resurrect" him using her Mad Healing Skilz.

Somehow Alivia will be involved in Rand's death. Perhaps she will be there helping him do the big Reseal, and will find a way to keep him from dying beyond any hope of Healing, but be killed herself before she can let anyone else know what is going on.
