New Readers: EothW, New Spring, or....?

Most of us here probibly started the series by reading Eye of the World. I know I did. However, there are multiple entry points into this series now. There are TWO versions of the prequal New Spring one could read (the original anthology or the book). There's also From The Two Rivers: The Eye of the World, Book 1 which has a completely different Prologue.

Heck, you could skip EotW and start with The Great Hunt and not be too lost.

So, how did you get your start in this series (if not by EotW), and what would you recomend new readers start with? New Spring?

Thanks.

EotW first.

New Spring after Fires of Heaven for obvious reasons for anyone who has read the beoks befiore.

Actually in my next reread I'm going to read New Spring between The Gathering Storm and Towers of Midnight.

But did anyone out there start on the series with News Spring, either in the anthology (presumably the purpose) or the prequel book?

I started with New Spring because it had just come out, and my brother had read the series for a while and I wanted to start.

He hadn't read it yet so I started it to tell him weather or not to read it.

I almost* always suggest that people read series in the order they were written and published, not from an internal world chronology. I find events make more sense that way and the reader always has the appropriate knowledge to make sense of what is being read. So I suggest EotW as the starting point.

* My one exception is that I suggest new readers to the Malazan books swap numbers 2 & 3 in the reading order.

I actually started with NS. It would indeed be better to read the first seven books first, as NS will make a lot more sense and certain, unexplained in NS, things will be obvious if you read the other books first. (fortunately I was able to piece together enough of it that I was fine reading it first).

I'm newer to the series but I started the series with the Eye of the World and so far I still think it was the best read. Don't get me wrong I've only just finished the 4th book so I don't yet have an opinion on the best book of the whole series but why should i wait till the 7th to read New spring?

I'm not completely sure about the exact timing of the release, but I think the original New Spring novella was released between the releases of "A Crown of Swords" and "The Path of Daggers". The way it is written is such that it assumes that you've read up to that point in the books, so not a whole lot is explained to an appropriate extent for someone new to the series. It is also an 'optional' read though it was entertaining and provides a bit of insight on a few things much later in the series. I didn't read the novel version of New Spring until just before book 12 came out. It was obviously good but not absolutely necessary.
