Newby Question: Do the Aes Sedei sort their lives out?!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and am only on The Shadow Rising (towards the end of it) so no spoilers please :). I felt the urge to post on here because no one else I know has read the series yet and I am raging at the utter incompetence of a majority of the Aes Sedei and wanted to vent and to see if anything improves.

I'm just progressing through when Sanche has been removed as Amyrlin and it just seems that Moiraine and possibly Verin are the only Aes Sedei worth her salt and the status associated with such a being. The rest all just seem almost entirely useless at a time when they could be shining. I understand that it being such an cataclysmic time that it would be now that civil strife within the white tower would be most likely and the black Ajah revealing themselves brings tough times but they are suppose to be feared and very powerful women with great skill with manipulation, reading people and cunning (the Great Game I suppose). However Sanche seems to have bottled quite hard and quelling unrest and seeing the very clear troublemakers within their own ranks, or at least forming together groups of trusted Aes Sedei in case opposition from the likes of Elaida is raised.

I'm not sure what else to quote as evidence it may be just more the vibe I am getting, I mean if a united portion of the Aes Sedai stood together to combat each of these individual threats they could be dealt with and really I'm just wondering if they ever get round to sorting themselves out or whether I should expect this level of "cheesy super villian" esq competence for the rest of the series lol?

Some get better and some get worse (in my opinion, i'm totally with you as far as they are not as cool as they think they are). I think that with time you hate some and you love some of them but I also second your motion about Verin and Moirene.

Welcome to WoT and you have a lot of very interesting stuff in front of you. Enjoy!!!

I'll add that I think the reason for much of the idiocy among the Aes Sedai is explained later. Non spoiler answer, it ultimately does boil down to "Their still human"

Completely agree but the problem is that they think they are more than just a human (not really, but they act as if they are). Their head is bigger than their brains!

This tale has several overarching themes katarr, which I'm sure you've figured out.

One of which is how human foibles effect events. Errors in judgement or action, bad timing, miscommunication or none. So on and so forth.

Another is how the relating of actual events are turned on their heads/twisted/exaggerated by the span of time or distance and in the case of prophecy and legend both. You've already seen some of that; such as how different cultures think of Aes Sedai as demons or saviors depending on their interpretation of rumor or gossip or actual interaction.

These two (really oversimplified by me) and others are what makes this story so engrossing to my mind.

You'll find yourself muttering over one thing or the other constantly. "These scrubs better get their selves squared away pronto or they're gonna get squashed." And not just the Aes Sedai. They are however hardheaded, stubborn, set in their ways, arrogant, self aggrandizing, complacent diva's who could not pull together on a rope to drag a pony cart for the most part. There are some few exceptions who attempt to steer their boat from disaster with varying degrees of success but even they possess some of these traits.

Ahhhh...Can you feel the love? :D

Indeed.

All I can say is hang in there, it gets better in The Gathering Storm (the latest book). Unless you count a certain someone, that shall remain nameless, who gets worse.

Besides that, just try and vent your frustration away from those stupid, retarded, bull-headed, ungrateful, stubborn, self-serving, arrogant, unneeded, self-centered,

blind, unwanted, irritating, hypocritical, hated, untrusted, sniffing, egomaniac bullies! And try to remain calm. The series is worth it.

p.s. To all Elayne haters out there, you are my best friend  .

Some things get dealt with, other things are in the process of being dealt with, a few more i definately think will be dealt with before the end of the series, and some others won't be dealt with at all.

Did that help answer your question? :D

You couldn't be clearer than that

Were he any MORE clear he'd be transparent, then we'd not be able to see him at all! Possibly so clear that his text would not be decipherable and that would clearly NEVER do.

Not being able to clearly read and understand the missives from a massive personage (merely in relation to his presence on these boards not inferring he himself is a person of great girth) such as our peerless Luckers would ruin most of my days, so it would. Ruinous on a scale as to rival that of the explosion of Krakatoa East of Java ...

speakin' o'which, I need some more coffee.
