I learned long ago to stop trying to figure out your references. Either I know it and am amused, or I just assume its random spam and go along with it.

Sometimes I make them ridiculously obscure on purpose, but then sometimes I make them really easy just to try and get a bite.

Pretty much. Of course, what I consider to be an obvious reference is probably only obvious to someone who has read everything I've ever read, watched everything I've ever watched, and listened to everything I've ever listened to. When I start quoting Queenadreena lyrics or some such, I don't really expect anyone to know what the fratch I'm talking about.
