Rand vs Richard Rahl. Just hummor me!

After TGS, I went back and reread (a fifth time I think) all WoT series. Because I felt something had to end I got The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind (second time)and there seems to be a lot of things alike WoT. Palace of Profets - The White Tower, collars like seanchan used, Sisters of The Dark - Black Ajas...

Between Rand and Richard... I do not know. Both awesome sword fighters (better Richard- beat 30 blade-masters once), both did not know sometime  what to do with their gifts...I think I like Matt better!!!

Sometime during Richards speech about how his cause is just and anyone else's point is evil, Rand will get sick of hearing him talk and stab him in the throat.

Better use baelfire...Rand seems to like it better in tGS!

Nah, Rand would still be distracted after Richard kicked the girl Rand tried to save in the Stone of Tear in the mouth, causing horrible wounds to her corpse. Richard would then explain how she was a death chooser and his actions were completely justified.

Another positive effect of this would be that if you balefire Richard halfway through a speech, you wouldn't have had to listen to the first half of the speech, since he'd have been dead before he began talking.

I read about 1/4 of the first SOT book and was really bored. I've heard alot of people mention that it is a WOT rip-off. Anyone have some time and want to give me a summary? Also feel free to bash away at it, as if TG did rip-off RJ he deserves worse.

I think you ought to finish SoT. It is boring about the middle of it , but its finished right! Find a truth finish at least ...but there is  a new book! I hate that! I hate it with all my heard! They are finished! You man thing, let Richard, Cara, Rachel,  even Nathan live their lives as best they can and not to adopted your Hebraic lows. We supposed to be free people, did we? Just kill us all and forge another sclaves! I just want to live in peace! Give me a room!  I worked more than 76 percent from your assumed workers, and I have got  96 Euro salaries per month. In my opinion I am better than 90 percent than you but I do not want anything at all. More over I want a global economy that put us all into their values! What did you think?  Are you all so far than all us? Just let us all to live! To live! We do not want your dreams, your pay-backs, not your Judith ways... we want to live! We want you gone, maybe you would be able to forge your next Empire on another lands! I do not care a bit. Just let us live!

For what it's worth, what I noticed while I was reading that series was that the first 3 or 4 books had a lot of astonishingly similar items, events, plot points, etcetera to the Wheel of Time.  However, by the 5th book, that series did take on its own flavor - in fact, going so far as to even never mentioning again a lot of those similarities - like for instance, one that is rarely brought up, but the girl in Stone of Tears that can "see auras" around people, and knows what they mean?  Sound familiar?  I don't think she's ever mentioned again after maybe book 3, and chances are, it has something to do with people telling TG, "Hey, that sounds a lot like Min from Wheel of Time."

Anyway, fifth book comes around, the story takes a new direction, which is at least slightly more original (yet absolutely no better, IMO).  It becomes a fantasy version of Atlas Shrugged essentially.

As for the topic of "Rand vs Richard Rahl,"  I think it would come down to who was telling the story.  RJ/Sanderson would rightly have Rand win, because they could actually tell you how it happened, through the use of the One Power, or Rand going through hundreds of blademaster-taught forms which would help him best Richard.  If Goodkind was writing it, Richard would win just because "Richard was filled with righteous anger," or some such nonsense, and would "beat 30 people," without ever bothering to tell how it happened other than, "the spirits of long-dead warriors filled him."  Or something like that.

If it takes a Series 5 books to get it's own flavor that it has failed, imo.

What are you talking about? Why did you pick my post to reply to and go off on some anti-semetic rant? Are you angry at me or Israel? I don't adhere to any of the abrahamic faiths so this has no relation to me religiously. Without getting into a deep political discussion, some of my family's closest friends are Palestinian. They fled Palestine during the Six Day War, losing their family farm to Israel. I'm very familiar with the conflict there, and thats why I'm really curious why you chose this forum and my post to let out your anger. Finally, how does this anger relate SOT or WOT?

I just was angry in that point, I think. Sorry!

I stopped reading these books somewhere around book 8 or so, but the first book actually wasn't so bad.  I think the problem was he decided to make a series out of it... he should've just wrapped it up there.

I read aSoT and don't plan do read any more TG novels. It got a 3/5, I have better things to do with my time.

There are many things not to like about his style, but copying from WoT isn't one of them (at least in the first book). Yes, there were a few allusions to elements from WoT, but far more of it were general swords & sorcery tropes. The vast majority of authors have few original ideas and rely on the strength of their exposition and style to move people.

TG just doesn't cut it. The characters aren't quite cardboards, but nor are they real 3D. Many aspects of the plot and the world simply don't make any sense. Too slow-going and too much fluff; it could easily have been a 200-300 page novel, instead of 800 pages. And the allusions to Objectivism are far, far too obvious for anyone familiar with their language and rhetoric. The best writers express their philosophies and worldview by showing the reader through characters' actions and plot arc; TG uses his characters as medieval mouthpieces for 20th century pulp philosophy. Not my cup of tea, sorry.

Plus, he's just a really shabby writer.

I am sorry but the description of the battles were better in SoT than WoT. There are scenes who bring us into dark edge! got be that!

  • 1 month later...

...and then there are scenes that deliberate, at great length, upon gang-rape and subjugation of women. Introducing something like this once as a shocker to show the horrors of war is one thing, but using it as a plot-filler any time you can't think of something else to write about is stupid.

Just really shabby writing.
