Elantris Issues (spoilers)

First, let me say that I really enjoyed reading Elantris.

My first issue is with Seon's.  If a Seon has an Aon at its core, how come it only ceases to function when the Shaod takes its master?  I would think that with the chasm causing universal Aon failure that all Seon's would "go mad" like they do when a person goes through the Shaod.  It also seems that the only way for them to be "fixed" is if their Aon's are somehow fixed.

My second issue is with the whole Elantris/Elantrian idea.  If Elantrians are the only ones that can manipulate the power of the Dor using Aon's, and if Elantris is what allows a person to become an Elantrian, how did:

a) Elantris come to be in the first place (since there were previously no Elantrians), and

b) Well, I had another question here but I can't remember it...if it comes to mind I'll add it, if not, I must not really care.

And my last issue (I think), is that most of the followers of Shu-Dereth are still alive, so even though Elantris has been restored, there is still a threat out there (considering Raoden realizes there are other ways of manipulating the Dor).  There should be a sequel or two IMHO.

I just finished reading Elantris! :)

I agree on the Seons, the only answer I could think of for that is that they are connected to a human, and maybe the connection helps retain their sanity. I don't understand how they continued to exist at all...

I think that the pre-Elantris "Elantrians" (for lack of a better name) had the ability to use the Dor, and Elantris was just made so they all had a place to group together. It's possible they were shunned from other societies and thus made one of their own, and people came to consider them as Gods.

I agree about the sequels, I wants MOAR!! ;)

Didn't that one fighting guy start to glow when he was doing his warming up thing?

btw, I haven't read the book in a year or two..so yea....>.<

That kinda works for me...they go "mad" when their master only partially goes through their change.  I'll suspend my ability to disbelieve. ;)

Meh, after the Chasm Elantrians couldn't fully change because of the Flaw in Elantris's Aon setup...the only answer I can come up with is a different form of Dor manipulation was used originally...similar to how we see various other people doing it during the story and Aon's weren't used UNTIL Elantris.

The series is set up so that it can have a sequel someday, if Brandon so chooses. However, he has a number of other books to write first.

Awesome.  I didn't know that he had even considered revisiting this world.  In the mean time, I plan on reading a number of his other books.

Yes he did use the Dor as did Dilaf or w/e the guys name was.  It's just the Elantrians were the only ones that used Aon's.

Mmk, I can't stand to type anymore into this thing because it keeps jumping around everytime I hit a button and I can't see anything I'm typing.

Ooooh, i hate that. it's so disorienting.

Ok, about the seons- i think they stayed for the same reason the dor could still work. there were other methods of manipulation. remember, the books roedan read never referenced their making, only their presence.

As far as the city of elantris goes, i think it must be a focus for the power of the dor. remember that the city is made into an aon and the dor can be used elsewhere, it is just weak. it could be used before the final elantrian chasm line was completed as well. i think once the focal point was repaired, the well reopened to max power.

of course this does not explain why the aons match the country's features...

  • 2 weeks later...

I recently read it as well.

Alys I took it from the approach that the dor is the power of life, ie the energy in everything around us.  By making Elantris into the shape of an Aon, and the Aon's are shaped like the land, it is in a way focusing the power of the land through them.  The Aon focuses the land's "energy" and as an Aon Elantris gives its dor "users" more power to work with.  Sort of like you said, it collects the energy and then when the Aon design was fixed, the well was back at max power.

No idea if that was how it was meant though.
