What is the upper limit of Callandor? (no spoilers)

Callandor has no buffer to stop a man from burning himself out. It also magnifies the taint, but as there is no taint right now, that part doesn't matter. What matters is there is nothing to stop a man from drawing too much.

A circle provides a natural buffer to the involved channelers. Nynaeve and Elayne say as much when they are using the Bowl of Winds and teaching the Windfinders to link.

So with a man drawing through Callandor but involved in a circle, is there an upper limit to what he can draw? The circle would buffer him...

Could Callandor theoretically be more powerful than the Choeden Kal in that case?

Edit: Even small spoilers go byebye.

Edit 2: Just changed the title to make clear to people this isn't a spoiler thread.

Thought the spoiler ban had been lifted with the Spoiler free board headed for a demise.

The spoiler wasn't really important to the question, though, just as a backdrop.

I think there are two options:

1) Either there is no upper limit to what a man can draw, save his own exhaustion, or

2) The circle, in providing a buffer, provides a limit, too

Don't know why the circle should control what a man draws through an angreal (of any sort), so I'm left thinking that #1 is true.

The circle provides a buffer by not letting the channeler overdraw.

If, on a sa'angreal of equal strength, the man would have a certain limit., and so the circle would stop where the buffer should be.

Maybe that is it.

Or, maybe the circle-buffer just allows the channeler to draw as much as he wants without limit.

I would think Callandor has a limit to how much one can draw through it safely. More than likely the buffer will be around that. I mean Rand could channel a lot more with the Choedan Kal without burning himself out than he would burning himself out with Callandor. More than likely Callandor has safety limits, it's just there's nothing stopping more power from coming through than the sa'angreal and the channeler can handle, the same way a man or woman can draw on more on the power than they can safely handle. The only reason you get the buffer is because the person controlling the link can't draw enough to burn you out with or without an angreal.

I have to disagree with Agitel on a couple of points, though I don't have the time to find the evidence right now...

1) I don't think Callandor has a safety buffer to protect you from burning yourself out

2) I think that the protection from a circle isn't that the person leading it can't draw enough power to burn you out, as if there were a certain amount that could burn you out; I think that you simply can't be burned out being in a circle but not directing the flows.

The spoiler ban will most likely stay until the release of the paperback, that is how we usually run it.

Got it. Thanks for clearing that up.

1) Rubernilly is correct. Cadsuane states that Callandor has no safety buffer. A side effect of this is that it enhanced the effects of the Taint and induced wildness of the mind, which is what caused Rand's attempt to bring that girl back to life in the Stone of Tear in tSR, and his wild lightning storm in tPoD.

2) No, being in a circle actually places a slight limitation on how much strength you can draw. It is this buffering effect that protects you from being burnt out in a circle. Also there are some turn around--for instance your strength is limited by a greater degree in a all female circle, but by a lesser degree in a cross gender circle. It still protects you from being over-used, but you contribute more of your innate strength.

My understanding of the topic..

Since Callandor doesnt have a buffer, it is possible to channel more than is safe. So potentially, it could be stronger than the CHoedan Kal, but it'd kill you doing it.

That said, the same could probably be done unaided. After all, Lews Therin created dragon mount. Thats got to be on the order of the Choedan Kal. If I remember right, he did that unaided.

As a member of a circle, you have no control of how much power is drawn through you. Obviously the link itself stops the amount from being too great, otherwise I doubt anyone would take the risk.

Makes you wonder if a link without this buffer is possible?

Also, what about an A'dam (and the domination band too)?

Could these be used to burn someone out..

I dont think the amount one contributes to a link is any different wether it is female like, or a male/female link. The male/female link is stronger because of the innate abilities of the power. Put white and black togeather, and both appear brighter (or darker) than either do alone.

If you want to think of it another way, a male weave is made a certain way, a female weave is made another way. A weave involving both must be made a third way, so this could present the source of its added strength.
