The taint and the walking dead.

We have had a lot of examples of men going insane from the taint. In fact in the WOT we had some explicit examples of what types of insanity and in what stages of training. One guy went nuts just two weeks after he came to the black tower I believe. One man thinking bugs are crawling over him (don't remember if Taim killed him or he set himself on fire). A young man with the mind of a toddler. Plus plenty of examples of men going into uncontrollable rages.

Yet none not even rand has been seen with the other so called affect of a rotting body. Rands wounds don't count nor do his visons IMO. The wounds are not caused by the taint but by another channeler and Fains dagger. At least I hope min is not sleeping with a man who's body stinks like a corpse from the rot.

I could be mistaken the series is friggen huge. Did it ever happen in the books? Is it a real affect of channeling tainted? Could it just be a side affect of an insane man who stopped washing and taking care of wounds that he got while just being insane?

Wasn't the rotting (in the Portal Stone worlds) due to the fact that he had to learn to channel on his own and wasn't able to control it?  I remember when Moiraine is telling Nynaeve (in EotW) about when 3 out of 4 women who have the spark die without training, one of the things that happens before they die is their body rots.  I think in different realities, Rand wasn't able to teach himself, so his body starts to rot... in one of the other worlds, he gets horrible headaches.  I think all are symptoms of unsuccessfully learning to channel.  I don't think it has anything to do with the taint.

No, the rotting IS a manifestation of the taint, but it takes time to manifest. For the most part Aes Sedai got to men before it went that far--usually because they went insane long before they began to rot. The only reason the Aes Sedai even know of it is because it was observed during the Breaking, and I imagine every now and again there has been a man who has evaded long enough to begin rotting before the Aes Sedai found them.

But we'll not see it. None of those at the Black Tower had been channeling long enough to begin rotting, not even Logain.

The 'visions' I take come from the balefire incident near the end of Crown of Swords.

By the way, the Taint has been cleansed (last chapter of Winter's Heart).

No I ment when he used the portal stone. Is the balefire "incident" when rand and ishy's balefire touch?
