A Verrin Lie and a Moiraine Lie? :O

Been re-reading TGH -

"Do you remember the first time we met, Lan?"

...

nearly twenty years ago she had told him ... that she would never speak of it again and expected the same silence of him.

If she had told him that she wouldn't then she shouldn't be able to; if not then why does she remember doing so?

"... He Who Comes With The Dawn. It is said there will be great signs and portents of his coming... so I thought you might have word of great events, the events that might herald him."

<Urien tells Verrin some more about He Who Comes With The Dawn and various other stuff>

"I cannot tell you where he is, Urien," she said, "and I have herd of no signs or portents to guide you to him."

That even Rand can ask "Do you think he was talking about Rand?" means that he gave more than enough info for Verrin to put two and two together and make a dragon. This could be word twisting based on the different meanings of the words "can/cannot" because while she could spill the beans on Rand she can't if she wants everything to go according to plan, or some such twisting. I'm not so sure though, it still seems like a pretty blatant lie, and if that's how she did it then it really exposes the oaths as useless trash.

Moiraine wasn't lying either time. She intended to never speak of it again 20 years ago so she could say what she did. When she spoke again she wasn't lying about it, so she could talk about it. There's no lie there. It just means 20 years ago she was wrong, and didn't want to remember the embarrassment of being thrown in a lake.

Verin is also not lying there. We don't know what she knows or doesn't know about the subject, but what she says is that "I cannot tell you where he is..." Which is true cause they don't know where Rand is at the time, and "and I have herd of no signs or portents to guide you to him" probably meaning she doesn't know much about the Aiel prophecies. Seeing as how she's a wetlander, that would make sense.

@Kadere : If she said to him "I will never speak about this again" as her thoughts imply she did, then she is bound to never speak about it again, period.

That's a complete misinterpretation of the oaths. If she'd sworn an oath on the Oath Rod never to speak of it again, you'd have a point. She didn't. She swore to never speak a word that was not true. The oaths are VERY flawed and allow for all SORTS of loopholes based on intent. When she said that she intended never to speak of it again, so she was telling the truth. When she spoke of again, 20 years later, she gives the story as it happened so it is the truth. There was no breaking of any oath.
