Considering the concern shows for his troops in the attack at the farmhouse in Tear, and his prominent feelings about causing the death of women, even Maidens of the Spear, I kind of feel the scene is at odds with Rand's character.

I kind of feel like he would make more of the incident. He had unleashed this terrible force upon the world with Taim leading them, and they just indiscriminately killed friend and foe with their techniques...on his order.

Perrin would have something to say about it as well. He had just led these soldiers into the thick of it, only to have many of them wiped out by the order of the man he came to save.

My mixed feelings about the scene come from the fact that I really am not concrete about what exactly happened.

I do recall the Shaido breaking and pockets of Perrin's group left standing as if stunned.

I guess I wanted more to come of the incident. I wanted Rand and Perrin and everyone to react to what the Ashaman did more strongly. I would think that if they did kill many friendlies too, that would add to their dislike and distrust of men who wear the black coats of the Asha'man.

It just kind of didn't factor in, which I found a little off.

I don't think many were killed. The Asha'man blasted the first couple lines before they started to flee and kept blasting them for a short period of time then they did several of those exploding rings. The dome was a small area surrounded by 60 000 Shaido and the rescue team. I don't think more than 5000 were killed. It happened quickly and brutally and the Shaido turned tail and ran. If the percentages of those killed were the same for both sides, Shaido and rescue team, then the rescue team would have lost less than 400 people. Although I tried to estimate on the high side I don't actually see the rescue team losing and more than 100 in the Asha'man attack.

But I do see your concern for Rand even issuing the order with Maidens in the kill zone. I think it was a combination of his present mood and the fact that though women died he did not kill them directly. Also another case, in Shadar Logoth Rand kills Liah instead of leaving her to her doom in Shadar Logoth. I think the same also applies with the Maidens outside the Dome at Dumai's Wells, kill some instead of letting them all die. IIRC Rand went out afterwards and looked at each dead woman's face for memorization. Instead of losing 100% of them he only lost a maximum of 7.7% of them.

The casualties from Dumai's Wells were nineteen Two Rivers men, a hundred Mayeners, more Cairhienin, a thousand Aiel.

Personally, I don't think any of the rescue team were killed by the Ashaman but it's only conjecture on my part as not really in keeping with the rest.

When Rand kills some of his own men with Callandor, RJ makes it into a pretty big deal.

Good point. I guess it's that lack of clarity that bothers me. In contrast to other battle sequences, that particular scene's aftermath wasn't really too clearly drawn out.

Honestly, Dumais Well was the most awesome fight of the book.  Simply because of the chest.  My visualization of the explosion was a little bit like that episode of mythbusters where they tested a guy falling from 30,000 feet being saved by a bomb in a train station.  Not to mention my visualization of the shrapnel from that heay wood chest was just epic.  Imagine facing Asha"Man who are blowing up peoples heads, then hearing & feeling something akin to a bomb going off, and having heavy wood splinters being embedded in things all around you.  WOW!

Hmm.

The Eye of the World: Moiraine, Lan and the guys facing the Shadowspawn. The first "real" fight, and pretty well-drawn out too.

The Great Hunt: Rand vs that Seanchan blademaster.

The Dragon Reborn: When Rand kills the woman and her guards. So much for his womanmercy there.

The Shadow Rising: Rand butchering the Shadowspawn with Callandor. Pretty awesome, also Rand trying to ressurect people was winful.

The Fires of Heaven: Rand against Lanfear. Short but sweet as.

Lord of Chaos: Dumai's Wells, epicness.

A Crown of Swords: Rand versus the mist, and Cadsuane bitchslapping him. And Mat against the gholam.

The Path of Daggers: Rand Callandoring the Seanchan (and his own troops for that matter) into next week. Man, I loved that. "I am the storm". So freaking epic.

Winter's Heart: Elza against Osan'gar. Lol, you try to Balefire someone and then a mountain-sized blast out of nowhere butchers you. Pretty funny.

Crossroads of Twilight: Elayne's rescue from the Black Sisters, and the following fight against the rebels.

Knife of Dreams: The fight against the Shadowspawn. I held my breath when LTT took over, plus we got to see some more cool weaves.

Overall, Rand with Callandor against the Seanchan army is my favorite, and I doubt that will change with AMoL.
