Well, discussions about who everyone thinks is the best singer/guitarist/drummer always causes a good debate. And that is what is going to happen in a series of threads hosted by the Band of the Red Hand ORG!

So, in this second thread, we are going to be discussing who are/were the greatest drummers of the various groups out there.

So go ahead and voice your opinions about who you think is the best drummer!

Guest Stefania Sedai

I have two votes on this one: Rick Allen, Def Leppard's Thunder God. The guy lost his left arm in a car crash but continued on as the band's drummer.

Vote two goes to Carter Beauford, drummer for the Dave Matthews Band. This guy just plays so tight and clean it is sickening.

Metallica's Lars Ulrich

i totally dissagree with that, lars is an awful drummer, the man imo is a no tallent hack riding on the coat tails of the band he created, for me the most tallented drummer ive ever had the pleasure to see was Joey Jordanson of Slipknot fame, the reason behing this is ive seen him perform in lars place at a festival when he pulled out sick, joey only had an hour to practice with metallica and totally owned everything they played that night

Wow, some interesting choices for drummer there.  Hard to say who is the best drummer without specifying a genre, but here are some of my favorites

Jazz/Funk - David Garibaldi of Tower of Power.  Tightest grooves you will EVER hear

Rock - Steward Copeland of The Police.  Amazing control and Hi-Hat technique

Hard Rock/Metal - this is a tie between Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater and Neal Peart of Rush.  Mind blowing odd time riffs for both, insane double kick action from Portnoy, and incredible drum solo capability from Peart.

I have a few faves. Of late, I would have to say Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters, the bloke never stops.

All time, John Bonham from Led Zeppelin. The sheer ferocity and power he was able to generate was breathtaking. Samples of his bass drum are still staple for beats even today. And who could forget Moby Dick.

I agree with Belar... Lars Ulrich is one of the most overrated drummers I've heard! He is also his own biggest fan.

For me, Keith Moon is one of the greatest, also I have to doff my cap to Phil Collins, he can sing(ish) while playing the drums! Some feat! And the drums on *Tries to think of the song* in the air tonight, or whatever the song is called, I think is one of my favourite drum pieces.

Keith Moon could make his kit sound as if a building was falling down around your ears, and in time!

Bonham a mountain.....

For urban soul/funk I gotta go with Garribaldi and Richie Hayward of Little Feat, who is actually a bit more versatile to my mind and does polyrhythms like no other, not in the rock world anyway.

Terry Bozzio of Missing Persons and before that Frank Zappa's best ever lineup is the most incredible drummer I have ever witnessed.

Lars never impressed me a lot. Good but not overly so. Of course Metallica don't ice my cake either. As far as gimmicky, but great in a Metal milieu .. Alex Van Halen

Gene Krupa, for brother from a different planet in his day. So far ahead of his time it was pitiful.

I am going to have to agree with White Wolf and KingKastchei on Niel Peart.

I am old school on this as well. Niel has got the largest percusion set that I have ever seen and plays it very well.

Another drummer I feel is the best is Ringo Starr of the Beatles, not only can he play the drums but can sing while playing as well.

Neil Peart of Rush (Keith Moon was a big influence). The guy is frickin' amazing! Y'all should try to look up his Anatomy of a Drum Solo on YouTube or something. My dad and uncle, who both are drummers, practically worship the guy.

Theres a few drummers who sing while playing though. Id hardley call Ringo Starr an all time great though, its not as if the Beatles made fantastic music structurally. I think most off the blokes mentioned here have sung a song or two whilst playing (besides Bonham!). I know Taylor Hawkins sang a song on the Fooeys last album (cold day in the sun). I know of an Aussie band called Spiderbait whose drummer (Kram) sings a bit as well.
