Well, discussions about who everyone thinks is the best singer/guitarist/drummer always causes a good debate. And that is what is going to happen in a series of threads hosted by the Band of the Red Hand ORG!

So, in this first thread, we are going to be discussing who are/were the greatest singers, whether they be soloists, opera singers, lead singers of whatever group, or any popstar out there!

So go ahead and voice your opinions about who you think is the best singer!

I'm choosing between John Lennon and Elvis Presley. Though I think Elvis is a better performer and Lennon's a better writer.

Again this category is hard. There can't be one best singer when you have so many different genres of singing. Luciano can't be compared, for instance, to John Lennon. Also, are we talking about best singer in terms of voice quality or in terms of performance? Or a mix of the two?

Purely on voice, I'd have to say Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. On power and strength, I'd say Shirley Bassey and Sharlene Spiteri. It would be a mistake, however, not to include the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and, in more modern terms, Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins, Alison Moyet, Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox.

Best all around male singer - Freddie Mercury (RIP).  One of the best vocal talents EVER!  Could give any classical opera singer a run for their money, and nobody can touch him in rock or blues singing.

Best all around female singer - Ella Fitzgerald.  Maybe not that versatile, but with a voice like hers, who needs to be!!!

I tend to agree with Tay on this that it is not easy to say one overall singer.......but my fav is Robert Plant, for male vocalists and for female? This is not an easy one to pick. Shirley Manson, Pat Benetar, the wench in Within Temptation,or Lacuna Coil........any of them are a pleasure to listen to....and not bad on the eye either ;D

If I were to exclude opera, I'd say Edith Piaf for female vocalist, and for male a tie between Frank Sinatra and Jacques Brel.

If talking modern rock/pop, a tie between Bobby Gillespie and Morrissey.

For metal, Ronnie James Dio. Damn, the little guy is 200 years old, and still sings the pants of anyone in the genre.

I'm gonna pitch in with a few here!

Luciano Pavarotti - He made it sound so effortless when he sang.

Sarah Brightman - I really like her duet with Andrea Boccelli.

Jim Morrison

Jose Gonzales

For this one I have to agree with everyone on Pavarotti. But for rock catagory I would have to say Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. For the older stuff I go with John Lennon, Paul McNartny, Nat King Cole, and Old Blues Eyes himself Frank Sinatra.

Pavarotti definitely. But I'm also pushing for Freddy Mercury (my husband and I walked out to "You're My Best Friend" at our wedding :)) and Sarah Brightman.

Not to take away from modern music, but I think that older genres were a more pure vocal singing than today.  Nowadays it's a little more about the delivery than the singing...not that they can't sing, but Sinatra, Fitzgerald, etc were pure vocal magic.

I can't remember the song/singer/band right now...lol...but it was an 80's hair band (Winger???) and the male singer hit some ridiculously high note.

And even though I am not fond of her music I would have to give the Vocal Range award to Mariah Carey.
