MAFIA The Suras Hunt – Final Version & Rules

 

With less than 24 players, we will play on one Game Thread.

There will also be a Public Thread open to anyone, including roleless innocents that die in the game.   

• You cannot discuss any knowledge you have of any piece of bonestone, or that piece will be confiscated.   

• No information about the rest of the game will be PM’d by the mod until the end of the game.

• Roled players cannot join the Public Thread. Sorry.

 

Given the number of people that have announced LOAs, there will not be a pre-set time limit on the days or nights. If you are leaving at any point, PM me and let me know so that you do not appear to be inactive.  Voting will take place as normal and with no time limit, we will not need to break for the holiday or the meet.

Roles have been assigned at random and final roles assigned just before the game begins.

 

The Game:

 

The Suras Hunt will be a modified version of the classic MAFIA setup. For more info and rules on MAFIA games go to wikipedia or see some of Barm’s links on the MAFIA 101 game thread on Fiddles.

 

We will have townies (innocents) and mafia (assassins). The object of the game is for the innocents to find and lynch all of the assassins during the day. If the innocents accomplish this, they win! During the night the assassins will kill the innocents. If the number of innocents ever equals or is less than the assassins, the assassins win!

 

FOR NEW PLAYERS: You will be assigned one alignment or the other. There are many fewer assassins than innocents. The innocents can only communicate on the game thread, no outside contact. You will not know each other or the assassins and through deductive reasoning, you must figure out who the assassins are. The assassins can communicate outside of the thread to orchestrate their night kills and form their strategy. Remember: the assassins are evil! They will try to appear innocent, lie about their alignment and try to pick off the innocents that cause them the most trouble. Innocents should pay attention to these potential ploys to gather clues as to who is an assassin.

 

The Roles:

 

*Roles are chosen at random – as in picking names out of a hat random, so no clues should be drawn from past games! I have also tried to assign original names to roles that are not listed on the Mafia rules so that experienced players do not draw any unwarranted conclusions. So the Priest was the Monk is now the Holy Man because that is an unused role name with no history.

 

This will be a Coroner Finder game (that means with each kill you will learn the alignment and role of the dead player).

 

SEER – this is the classic finder role. Once per night the Seer can ask the Mod the alignment of one player.

 

HOLY MAN – this is the classic healer role. Once per night the Holy Man can name a person to protect from a night kill. If the assassins choose that person to kill, they will live instead, and no kill will take place that night.

 

SINGER (new) – the Singer is a different kind of finder and may ask for clues to the location of one piece of bonestone per night. See rules regarding the bonestone for further clarification.

 

GUIDE (new) – The Guide will be a neutral player (a player with past experience) who will be available to answer questions about MAFIA in general and this game in particular. The Guide is a benevolent character and can answer questions to the best of their knowledge, but is not obligated to answer, so be polite! The Guide will not know roles or alignments of players. The Guide will be an active player and will be able to vote. The Guide cannot be lynched or night killed in normal play, but is susceptible to any of the bonestone’s powers. This means that the guide should be treated as an innocent (you can trust the information they provide) unless someone uses a piece of bonestone that alters alignment. Then all bets are off.

 

ADMIRAL (new) – a combination of the previous Judge and Captain roles (the names of which already bear precedence in the MAFIA world, hence the name change). The Admiral is a blind player (will appear as Admiral) but will have an alignment. The Admiral may supply information like the Guide, but the information will depend on their alignment and may be true or may be intended to lead players into a trap. The Admiral is immune to normal lynching or night kills, but is also susceptible to any of the bonestone’s powers. The Admiral may or may not come in to play.

 

EDIT: MINISTER (new) - The Minister is similar to the Admiral in that he will play as the Minister. He will have an alignment, may supply information, and can ask questions. He is immune to the lynch or night kills, but vulnerable to any effects from bonestone.

 

The Rules:

 

1.  You will play as yourselves, except for the Admiral

2.  You cannot quote a PM from the Mod.

3.  You have to remain friendly and polite! It’s a game!

4.  You cannot edit a post once it is made.

5.  If you a roleless innocent and you are lynched or night killed, you can participate on the public board. Roled players may not, for obvious reason! Do not discuss the bonestone!

6.  Outside of the normal MAFIA rules, this game will feature Tasks, Actions, and Plays, which will be described in detail at the beginning of each setting. 

      A Task: an activity with an objective that players must achieve. In this game, your task is to acquire the pieces of bonestone, whose properties (powers) are described below.

An Action can be one of three things:

A Random Action:  Throughout the game there exists the possibility that a random event can occur and take the life (lives) of the player(s). These events will be predetermined as far as the Day and exact time (GMT) they will occur. Only the Mod will know when these events are scheduled. They may occur during the day or the night. When they occur, the Mod will post the action and last person(s) to post before this action will be the victims.  The results will be described in the Mod’s post.

A Call & Response Action:  At certain points in the game, the Mod may step in for a roll call to see who is paying attention. It will be announced as a “Call & Response Action” and a keyword will be given. For example, if the keyword is “JUMP”, then each player’s next post must begin with “JUMP”, then their regular post. Fail to post the keyword will result in death.

A Russian roulette Action: It is possible that you will encounter a puzzle of sorts. It will be announced as a “Russian Roulette Action” and go like this: Let’s say you are waiting at port for the ship “Maiden’s Folly” to arrive. Unexpectedly, three “Maiden’s Folly’s arrive and you have to choose the correct one. Choose the wrong one and you die. The group may determine by a quick vote the order that they wish to put the players in to choose. So, if the first player chooses incorrectly they die. Same with the second.  Choosing the least valuable or suspected assassins to do the guessing would be wise.

A Play: A Play will be an individual challenge assigned to a player by the Mod throughout the game. You may be contacted and told that you have the opportunity to steal a piece of bonestone. You would then PM the mod and let them know who you would like to steal it from (you are guessing that they have it). Then, to pull this off, you have to get them to post immediately after you. Then you and they will be notified that possession of the bonestone has transferred.

 

Any of the Actions or Plays may or may not be used. The bonestone task will be. Your job is to acquire one of the five pieces of bonestone. Details on how to do this will be announced at the start of the game.

 

* The Blue piece will give you the power to change one player’s alignment to your choice.

* The Clear piece will allow you to block any night action one time.

* The Orange piece will give you two votes on one day.

* The Yellow piece will let you force one player to reveal their alignment and role.

* The Black piece will change every player but one to an innocent. The remaining assassin will not be known to previous assassins.  If this assassin is lynched, a curse is invoked and another random player will turn into an assassin. To end the curse, three assassins must be lynched (not in a row).

 

Bonestone Rules:

 

The pictures of the pieces will exist on the start page to the game thread, along with the player status and day/night/event summary.

ONLY ONE picture of each piece of bonestone exists anywhere. If the picture is not on the start page then that piece is hidden somewhere on any of DM’s public threads.  It may be moved. To claim it, you must be the first to PM the Mod that you have found it. Then I will remove the picture from play and it will be in your possession. You may use it whenever you wish by again PM’ing me to announce this. I will then announce to the game that a piece has been found and used, along with the effects of the use.

 

1.  You may possess only one piece at a time.

2.  You can transfer this piece to another player by PM’ing this action to the Mod.

3.  You cannot use the power of the bonestone if the Mod doesn’t know you have it.

4.  If the player holding the bonestone dies and has not passed it along, it will appear back on the start page and can be re-hidden.

6.  Pieces may be introduced at intervals, removed, and re-hidden if not found.

How will roles be given out, via PMs?

1. Yes they will. Unless the black bonestone is used.

2. Yes, via PM's is correct. I do not know if he is sending out PM's to players without roles. I suspect he is.

3. Correct. It would be incredibly unfair if he was, as the Mod know's all.

This thread is open to all who wish to specualte and comment on the game. It is an excellent place for new players who are thinking about playing in the future to post and learn more, and for experienced players to comment and, well, share experience! If anyone happens to find a piece of bonestone, you are strictly forbidden to share that information with any active player. Taunting them with it is another story all together....  The first rule of the bonestone: We do not talk about the bonestone.

Just making sure that the rules are handy - never know what might be just around the corner.

Don't lynch; go back to the beach. Or help find the correct bonestone so that you may escape to the beach! The five won't die from the lynch but from the battle that is going to come at or just before the night. I am willing to bet on it. A lynch has to come at some point, but not now.

 

If you have a vibe about a player, articulate it. I hate to see everyone voting on someone with out a reason. And over a name is just as crappy as no reason.

 

Rufae's alignment needs to stay firmly in the unknown.

Note on the rules: As long as the response to the Call and Response action is included in the post after the call has been issued, I'll accept it even if it's not the first word. Weaving it into the stories is great...

And you guys should listen to Alys......
