Naol Charin is Jain Farstrider

At the end of the chapter A Stave and a Razor, Mat asks Noal if he's related to Jain Farstrider: The old man's face went still as stone....."A cousin," he said at last, grudgingly." He was my cousin." "He was a fool," Noal said grimly...."He went gallivanting about the world and left a good and loving wife to die of a fever without him there to hold her hand while she died. He let himslef be made into a tool by-" Abruptly Noal's face went blank. Staring through Mat, he rubbed at his forehead as though attempting to recall something. "Jain Farstrider was a great man," Olver said fiercely...."...He captured Cowin Gemallan after Gemallan betrayed Malkier to the Shadow!"...."He did that, boy. That much is to his credit. But what adventure is worth leaving your wife to die alone?" He sounded sad enough to die on the spot himself....[Tuon]"You have a good heart, Master Charin."..."Do I, my Lady?" Noal said, sounding as though he really wanted to hear an answer.

Obviously, Noal is much more personal to the situation than a mere cousin should be, and seems to take blame for the death of Jain's wife. He wouldn't be sad if he was an outside, he would most likely be mad, disgusted, upset, any number of emotions other than sadness. I might be mistaken, but I don't think I am, what's everyone's opinion on this?[/i]

final purpose, eh? I'd say mat's taking him to Rand, and Jain tells rand of the inner workings of Ishy's mind. or not, you know. he could just happen to know how to get into the tower of Ghenji, having been there before. (there's proof somewhere, I know i've seen a post on it. i can't tell you where the referance is, though.)

They already know how to get in, since Birgitte told Olver, who told the others.

And there is no evidence that Farstrider has ever been to the tower. He didn't even know where it was, he started talking about the Shadow Coast, which is quite a bit off.

I wouldnt mind knowing if hes still controlled or partialy by Ishy....

It's doubtful. I don't think the compulsion would have survived Ishamael's death.

The compulsion would survive. For Ishamael's death to affect it would require that Ishamael maintain the weave at all times. With something like compulsion that isn't going to be the case. Once it is set, unless the task is completed or the person is strong enough of will to resist, a counter order would have to be issued.

“Abruptly Noal's face went blank. Staring through Mat, he rubbed at his forehead as though attempting to recall something.â€

I just had a thought that this sounds rather like what Alviarin does when she touches the mark Shaidar Haran gave her. I wonder if Noal (Jain) could have been marked by Ishy in a similar way. What if he is a darkfriend? If he is, he obviously doesn’t sound too happy about it. Almost as though he regrets his decision. But why else would he rub his forehead like that the instant he thought about being made a tool by Ishamael?

I guess it could be because he doesn’t remember that it was Ishamael. Perhaps another bi-product of the compulsion.

Only a Channeller can be turned using the 13 Aes Sedai, 13 Myrddraal combination. So unless Noal/Jain is a latent Channeller, that isn't a possibility.

As to the face going blank and rubbing forehead thing, to me that indicates a part of the Compulsion kicking in. He was under orders not to reveal what happened, then when he gets close, the Compulsion clamps down. Noal realizes something happened, but is being constrained from remembering what it was.

Just because there was a book written about him, (which he may well have authored himself) doesn't mean he was strong willed. He was just well travelled and adventurous. Compare that with Morgase who was portrayed as being about as strong willed as a person could get. She had a very hard time throwing of Rahvin's Compulsion. Even when she did re-establish enough free will to act, she still had instances where she half wanted to go back.
