I have never heard of anyone naming their kids after WoT, I had two Guinea Pigs called Esme and Nanny after Granny Esmerelda Weatherwax and Nanny Gytha Ogg. Closest I have gotten.

Though I bet someone has, I met a guy online in a game once that when he heard that I was from Scotland says, completely deadpan, "Cool, one of my kids is called that", yup he had three kids called Scotland, Iceland and Norway. Seemed completely sincere.

One of the things I like about the Netherlands is that when you name your kids it has to be approved by the government and they can totally refuse accept the registration on grounds of stupidity. No one born here gets called Peachielalagoogles. It is literally the law.

Yes, government control is awesome.

Whaaa??!?? The Netherlands government has to approve of the naming of children? Fascinating. I’m imagining some government employee with a red stamp that says”approved” or “denied” having a bad day or in a silly mood just having a field day

I presume they have some sort of guidelines, and it is not entirely left down to the whims of individuals 🙂

I am not an expert but I would hazard a guess that this relates to the historical situation where the Netherlands did not have surnames pretty late in the day for that kind of thing. Until Napoleon (actually, probably the French Revolutionary Republic, so slightly before Napoleon, who would later install his brother as King) took over here in the name of liberté fraternaté and er, croissants, iirc, Dutch people had names like Jaap Jansen (son of Jan, in other words). The most famous coffee brand here is Douwe Egberts, named after one of the most famous owners of the company, though it was actually started by his father, Egbert Douwes. The efficient French republic was having none of this however and insisted everyone have a surname. The Dutch people to a great extent thought that this would just be passing thing and before you know it, it would be back to business as usual. However, given the benefits to the gathering of taxes when everyone has proper names and can be traced, the system never was gotten rid of. Which left a lot of Dutch people with the names they chose in protest or as a joke, such as Mr. Pisspot or other more obscene or vulgar names. I think this has given the Dutch people the collective idea that really, you just cannot trust people to choose names for themselves.

Though I am not Dutch, maybe I am misunderstanding the culture 🙂

Wow, that’s truly fascinating and I appreciate the education you provided! Thank you 😊 Now I’m curious how far it must have gone to require government intervention…imagine living in that time when the amount of people who had taken or given names that were extreme enough necessitated legislation. How colorful it would be to wave at people and say “hello Mr pisspot!” “Good day dick head!”  Fantastic!

When it protects children from their parents, yes it is. By the Light and my hope of rebirth, it most definitely is.

And when the government is people like Fetterman, Trump, Menendez, Giuliani, Biden, Boebert, Feinstein, etc...  These are the people you want protecting children?  Not saying there is never a reason for intervention, but blanket oversight rarely leads to best outcomes in the majority of cases.  They help some, harm others, and are probably close to neutral for the majority.

Anyway, back on topic.  I'm thinking the TV show will help get the names out there more.  Per my initial response in this thread, I have never run across a Randland name in the wild.

I could not comment, as this is not my experience of government. Nor would I think that these types of personalities would have much to do with the inner workings of the departments and services that protect children. And if you had any experience with the horrors that children daily go through from their own parents and the only possible help that they will ever get is from the government, I would question whether you would be making such glib comments about the dangers of government control, which you appear to be suggesting is worse or a bigger danger than parental child abuse. It kind of makes me feel sick to my stomach, actually. Maybe you could read up on stories from foster parents regarding the state of the children they have to take care of after the big bad government has rescued them from their home situation. You might find it educational, or it might help you resist making such comments in public.

I comment on what I experience - and unfortunately, those I named are part of my experience.  I'm glad wherever you are from has an altruistic government that protects minors from their parents.

Just recently an Ohio father called the police because his 11-year-old daughter had been groomed and tricked into sending photos of herself to a man.  The government representatives arrived and threatened to arrest the 11-year-old for producing child pornography.

Just a father trying to protect his daughter from a predator (and perhaps protect other vulnerable children in the process), but the benevolent government representatives had a better idea.

And clearly the answer is not to try and improve the system, but is to offer children no protection at all. I think the record of the US police towards victims of sexual crimes is well documented, however I can see that this means that government intervention in such areas is more needed rather than less.

It is nice to see that you are refusing to back down from your indefensible position. The government must protect those that cannot protect themselves, because as your example shows, there is no one else.

But sure I agree with you, governments are bad, enemies of the people. Boo hiss.

You seem to think there is a difference between police and government - if I'm reading your comment correctly.

I appreciate and respect police officers.  There are bad ones, but society could not function without them.  And they are government.

Nobody biological, but I did name my very first iPhone sa'angreal. Nowadays, of course, that may seem an absurdly generous honorific for an iPhone 4S; upgrading from a couple-dozen-actual-protruding-buttons-keyboard-with-mechanical-trackball Blackberry it made perfect sense.

Ha!  I'd say more of a ter'angreal.

If names determined characteristics, I’d personally avoid naming anything nyneave 😂

Why on earth would anyone say such a thing?? I seriously had the dillusion that my future daughter would be given just that very name!

As it turned out I never had a daughter, but three sons. One of the is called Theon. Ohh well, that’s another series I know. But it’s tangential at least.😉
