Shame on You

Disrespecting Mr.Jordan's vision. He put his heart, soul, ...life into creating that world. The minutest detail... right down to the stubble of Perin's beard. You spit on all of that, and scraped him off the soles of your boots, to jump onboard the Oboma train. You, selling out his vision, is not what he would have wanted, nor is it what I've been waiting, with anticipation, for.

Hi Annilori, while you're entitled to your opinion, I'd like to share the counter argument that the upcoming TV show is an adaptation. There's no possible way that Robert Jordan's books could be faithfully adapted "own to the stubble of Perrin's beard."  I happen to know some of the people involved in the show personally. These talented people care deeply about the books. It changed many of their lives for the better. Harriet and Brandon are involved and all offer their blessing. Harriet is giddy with excitement over the casting.

It's OK to be disappointed and it's OK to not watch the show. The books will forever remain unchanged. But please don't buy into the false hype that this show is somehow motivated by anything other than trying to share an incredible story.

If it helps, think of the show as a fresh turn of the Wheel:  the 3rd Age of the books has gone and left, the Wheel has turned, and the Age has come again. With its new coming, the same events play out, but some things are different, some faces are new, but the overall story repeats.

Kudos, Mr. Denzel, for a much politer and more tolerant response to the op than they deserve.  My own thoughts on this, directed to said op, follows:

Shame on you for trying to appropriate ownership or guardianship of Jordan's vision, when his widow and his chosen successor have signed off on and participated in pre-production and given their green light.  Who do you think you are, that you get to decide what constitutes "spitting" on Jordan's legacy and world-building, when the people actually responsible for that guardianship, who actually own a stake in that legacy, are perfectly happy with and support the production.  And how dare you spit on the countless hours of hard work by the production team, to get as far as they have, when you haven't even seen a hint of what the show will be like?  So some people with brown skin are playing people you imagined to be white, so what?  How fragile is your ego that you can't tolerate someone else's imagination of a fictional story?

This is the very definition of toxic fandom.  There are millions of people who've read the books and loved them, and not all of them love the same things, and some of the things some people love, others hate.  And no two people are gonna imagine the same things in the same ways that are described in the text.  Get over yourself, or as the kids say, stop trying to yuck everybody else's yum, particularly when you haven't even had a taste yourself.

Well said.
