  1. Jared followed Nox in, bit didn't take a seat. He asked for a glass of water and sipped it while listening to the other two men talk. When Barry chugged his drink and then spoke to Jared, he turned his attention to the other man.

"While the drink may help with the nerves, even the slighest bit can inhibit your reaction speed. The amount you had shouldn't be a big deal, but its soemthing to keep in mind."

Jared smiled at Barry when he texted the girl from the night before. Oh he remebered those days. He laughed, hoping the girl didn't take the message too far. It really could have a double meaning. "Iworry if Emily doesn't send a smiley face in a text, but I'm sure some don't like it. I wouldn't recommend a wink with that one though."

He laughed at the comment about Emily. "Can't say much for Nox, but I'm sure its similar. For Emily and me, its about trust. Emily knows my abilities and instincts and she trusts in those as much as she does inme to get home at the end of the day." He paused for a moment. "Its not that she doesn't worry, but that she's trained herself to function at the same time. She knkws when I'm in the field, I'm careful. Honestly speaking the hardest part hasn't been the worry; it has been the distance."

Jared took a long drink of his water feeling glad he was stationed here. "But as for her safety. She's not in danger - not anymore than most people. And quite frankly she can take care of herself."

Jared of course had seen her in action as a mage, but the girl could shoot too. She had learned that from her best friend Ayden some time ago. Jared had been surprised when he had seen her pull out the pistol for the first time. The memory wasn't a good one, but it had forever changed their relationship.

  2. Jared smiled when Dorian came down the stairs - clearly the man had just woken up, but Nox diffused the situation. Nox's joke about dying was met with a raised eyebrow and a grin. "I'll bring him back - and if I die, and you come back - then you'll have Emily to deal with. You wouldn't like her when she's angry." Jared laughed, but it was true.  Angry Emily didn't make an appearance much, but when she did it was bad.

Then Nox opened the armory, and Jared was like a kid in a candy store. Not to mention that said child was just told "get whatever you want." Jared's eyes lit up as he stepped into the room. Jared grabbed a sling such as the one Nox carried and took a few magazines of .45 rounds as well as another Glock 21.  He attached the borrowed pistol and his own to sling along with the magazines and land warriors.  Jared pulled the combat knife out of his boot and attached it as well. His own pistol was modified so he could hold both knife and gun at the same time, and although the borrowed one wasn't, switching to the second pistol would be seconds faster than reloading and those seconds could be the difference between life and death.

Jared took his own leather jacket and put it on over.  It was purposly a little too big in the chest to accommodate such equipment. "I'm ready when you are."

The two men took the train and Jared spent it reading over the materiels that Nox had sent him. It was kind of appaling when he though of it. Man made experiments creating monsters. Someone call Mary Shelley. Jared held back his questions - those could be saved when the entire group was together. Instead when he finished, he engaged in some idle chit-chat with Nox - things like how he met Emily and some nifty alien stories from home - growing up in Roswell was fun.

The train stopped and they walked the rest of the way to Chesterfield's. It was a favorite of his and Emily's and they'd have to set a date there soon.  It would be good for them. Jared had an idea though. "You know, Nox, I'm kind of a nerd. Love Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, all of that stuff...and in Lord of the Rings, Gimli and Legolas often have a competition.  I propose one just like it - the one with the least kills buys drinks at the end of the night. What do you say?"

  3. Jared smiled. Babies liked Nox - it was just an adorable thought.  Michael was by no means shy, and Jared was sure that Michael would make sure he was noticed if Nox ever met him. The idea of the three of them getting together though sounded fun. "Sounds like we're setting up a future play date." Jared smiled, it would be good for the parents and the kids.

Jared laughed when Nox mentioned playing soldier.  He just found the way he said it entertaining given his career. "I'm okay with playing with fire as long as it doesn't put my wife and son in danger, and as for the mundane stuff - I'm a soldier in a country with legalized conceal carry - do you really think I'm unarmed." Jared's grin showed he was kidding, but he was actually armed. It was seldom that he wasn't.

"Homework before we leave. Try out that weave. If it comes together like you saw, you can do it, if not - probably shouldn't do it." Jared laughed. "You'll be fine if it doesn't come together and you don't place it on someone else..." Jared's voice trailed off.  Emily was frustrated and he knew he better make sure that everything was okay before he followed Nox. "Excuse me, someone is frustrated."

Jared pulled out his wallet and called Emily. "What's wrong love?" Jared could hear their son crying in the background. "Is he okay?"

Emily sighed. "He's fine - must be rush week for the fraternities.  I just got him to bed and then someone at MSU decided to light off fireworks. He's awake now, trying to get him back to bed."

"Do you need me - you're more upset than just that."

"No, I'll be okay, but Andrew is calling me every fifteen minutes, and I'm trying to get him back to bed, and..."

Jared interrupted. "Turn off your wallet hon.  Andrew can handle the company for an hour or two - he's competant." Jared could hear her starting to object. "If it makes you feel bed then send him a message saying you need an hour right now.  I'm sure he'll understand."

There was a pause and a consoling sound from Emily's end of the line. "Okay.  Thank you love."

"Now deep breaths like I taught you."

Emily did so. "I love you Jared."

Jared smiled. "I love you too. You sure you're okay?"

"Much better now - go have fun with the guys now. I'm turning off my wallet, and will let you know when I turn it back on."

They said their farewells and Jared returned to Nox. "Stupid fraternities. Alright - I'm ready to head out when you are. While we are on the way, is there anyway that you deal with having someone else in your head - at times it's convenient and then sometimes - well - it's not."

  4. Jared smiled as he hobbled over to Nox. "No you didn't wake me, but I hear you on being tired. I didn't get much sleep last night. New orders - I'm being stationed here as the liason to the CCD. Emily was beyond excited."

Nox wasn't a good patient.  Why was he not surprised. "Lay down please." Jared asked and Nox listened as Jared removed the towel to look at the wound. "You mentioned before you used a spirit weave.  That's why it didn't work.  Healing requires the use of air, water, and spirit." As he spoke, Jared seized his magic and began forming the healing weave so Nox could see it. He settled the weave over the injury and cold tell it took hold, the wound sealed itself back up.  The scar would still be there since it had time to age.

"That's it," Jared said, offering Nox a hand in standing up. "Was hoping Cruz would be here so he could see it, but no worries - if you can't show it to him - I can later. Also interesting to note, use that on someone completely healthy and it works on fatigue.  It's a two-edged sword though - you're still tired, but don't feel it. You're not careful with it, you can hurt yourself, and you don't need any help on that." Jared teased. "Also, you can't self heal. It sucks, but it's true."

Jared was interrupted by a little girl grabbing at his leg. Jared smiled and looked at Nox, "May I?"

    Nox grinned. "Sure."

Jared picked her up and held her. "She's adorable." The baby was curious and kept looking around. When she look at Nox and reached for him, Jared handed her over to Nox. "You get that response, then you're already doing a good job.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, we're just a phone call away.  I remember how daunting it can be to be a new parent, but you have another friend with a child right? No matter, just wanted to let you know that we're a willing resource if you need it."

  5. Jared recieved a text from Nox - he opened his wound again.  Jared shook his head a chuckled.  Part of healing was staying put and allowing yourself to heal.  It was something that Nox had trouble doing, however.  Jared understood - he didn't like to sit idle either. Jared stood, feeling very sore. He would manage, but he needed to let Emily know he was leaving.

"Love, Nox hurt himself again." Jared said when he found her with Michael.

Emily laughed. "He seems the type to be good at that. I'm assuming you're the doctor today."

"And teacher," Jared said. "Not sure they'll be able to, but another healer is always a good thing."

Emily nodded. "It's fine.  Go hang out with the guys today.  I have a lot of work to do anyways. If I ever get over how adorable our son is." She rubbed noses with their little boy and he laughed. "Let me know when you'll be home and don't hurt yourself!"

Jared smiled and gave her a kiss before heading out. It didn't take long to get to Nox's place and the servant took him downstairs where Nox was waiting with their child. "Morning, how's the dad today?" Jared moved, his movements displaying the soreness he felt.  Maybe if Nox or Cruz could heal, he would have one of them take care of that.

  6. *Jared*

Jared didn't add to the conversation that Slade and Nox were having, and Emily remained quiet too.  It appeared Slade was Atharim and at least he didn't want to kill their kind. There conversation was Atharim business and Jared didn't feel like he should offer his input, and quite frankly, despite his words Jared hadn't built up a trust with Slade enough to reveal his and Emily's abilities.  They called them gods though - godlings anyway.  Jared wasn't sure he liked that title.  He was no god. He was a man with a special gift, but he wasn't a god.  It was the reason why few knew of his near death.  He didn't want people thinking he was Jesus reborn or anything.

Nox's offer to fight was met with disapproval from Emily in his head.  Despite her concern, he knew the disapproval wasn't because of the danger.  "That's a good offer Nox, and I'd be willing to help out of course, but I'm stationed in Sierra Leone and what little time I do get in Moscow, I spend with my family.  Should circumstances change, I will take you up on your offer." Jared felt Emily simmer down as he said the words, and he looked at her while continuing. "However, I'm sure I can make time to discuss stitching with you for a bit." Emily gave a nod.  Jared had a week of leave time instead of just a few days.

Nox grinned, "Just keep the damn thing away from me and we'll be good.  Whenever ya'll aren't busy.  I'll have to get with Cruz see when he's free, VP of RnD doesn't get much time, for all I know he's flying home tomorrow."

Jared nodded.  "I have a week - ASAP is better."  Emily squeezed his hand.  It was time for them to go.  "We better take our leave of you. Nice meeting you Nox, Slade." Jared shook their hands.

Emily gave Nox a hug and whispered to him. "Sorry about staring earlier.  You looked just like Jared the first time he held his son. You'll do well, Dad." Emily smiled and stepped back, taking Jared's hand.  "Good night everyone."

Jared looked at Nox. "Good luck, Dad. Good night." The good night was directed to everyone in the room.  "Give Dorian and Barry our regards, sorry we cannot stay longer."  When farewells were given, they left.

The duo were met outside by their driver and they drove home.  They needed sometime to theirselves and thankfully Emily's sister Rachel was out of town on some sort of psychiatry convention, so Mara had Michael at Rachel's house.  Jared and Emily didn't get to be alone much anymore, but her sisters had made it possible at least for a night.  They entered the house and Matt, their butler approached.  "Master Vanders, I have a message for you."

Jared saw the Legion's seal on the envelope and Emily did too.  Her heart sank at that.  That meant orders, and orders meant a cancelled leave. A few seconds later, her voice echoed the sentiment. "You're leaving aren't you?"

Jared read the note - there were two actually.  One was official orders, and the other more personal.  Emily's thoughts shifted to confusion as Jared's own emotions changed and he handed her the notes.  As she read, her emotions changed to joy and she jumped into Jared's arms.

    *Emily*

Emily's heart hurt when she saw the seal on the envelope and she felt the tears beginning to well up in her eyes.  She couldn't ask Jared to leave - it was his life - it was who he was, but she missed him so much.  He just got back - it wasn't fair of them to ask him to go back to Sierra Leone already. She was starting to get angry when Jared's emotions shifted.  He was - happy??

Jared didn't speak - he just handed her the two pieces of paper.

The first one read, typed in a typical military fashion:

    "Captain Vanders,

You are being reassigned to be the Legion Premiere's Liason to the CCD.  Effective immediately after your current leave, you will be assigned to Moscow.  Please contact the quartermaster at your earliest convenience to facilitate the shipping of your personal effects.

    Jacques Danjou

    CEO Legion Premiere"

    The second was handwritten:

    "Capt. Vanders,

I know being stationed here has been hard on you and your family.  Make the most of this and give my regards to your wife and son.

    Jacques"

Emily couldn't help herself.  She jumped into Jared's arms and kissed him. Tears had begun to fall, but they were tears of joy.  Her Jared was home for good.

((OOC: The likelihood  of that actually happening is slim to none, but I did it so that Jared is available for RP.  Nox done by Mat))

    Gabe Garner, age 18

    Hometown: Taren Ferry

Physical description. Gabe is 6ft and has medium red hair and green eyes. He weighs around 160 pounds. He was pretty small for a farm boy. He had scars on his arms from fixing equipment around the farm.

Gabe is very out going, he sometimes pushes the limits of the rules in place. He will not break the rules unless he thinks it for the greater good of his cause. Gabe is decent looking, however his voice is of a higher pitch. And is often made fun of for it. He usually keeps to himself and minds his own business.

Gabe is the oldest of two, has spent his whole life on the farm. His family had made their living that way for centuries.  He spent his time usually plowing fields or in the gardens he had started, they were turning out better than his last. He should actually have some vegetables to show from it.

It wasn't long until Gabe had a new sister Macy. A few years after she was born she got extremely sick. His mother had to take most of her time taking care of Macy. While helping his father in the fields for most of the day he took to the house when he had a chance to help his mother with work inside. It let his mother take more time with Macy, and also led Gabe to his discovery that would change his life.

One day while cleaning Gabe found a chest hidden in the attic. He blew the dust off of it, choking and coughing as all of the dust flew there the air.  Inside there was some armor that looked weird to him and a white cloak. When he asked his father he sighed and shook his head. "That my son is the attire for the Whitecloaks, an army." Gabe's smile was as wide as can be and his face filled with excitement. Before he could speak ken his father spoke. "I am afraid I must ask you to put this out of your mind, we need you here, your sister needs you here. Gabe, fighting for what's right is what we always taught you, however being in a army... you see and do things no one should have to bear"

His smile faded and then came back "But if she gets better I can join!" And ran off to the house before his dad could speak.

Father: "that boy hears what he wants Half the time... I swear."

As the days went on Gabe learned more from other kids, and the thought of fighting to protect the innocent and the weak. He began telling stories to Macy about the adventures he would have, how he would travel the world and bring her back some piece of it from each city he visited.

Macy: "You're the best big brother ever, just promise me to be safe."

Gabe: "I promise Macy, but you have to promise me to get better. I love you." He laid his head down by her and fell asleep.

As the years went on Macy slowly got better. Gabe seemed to think it was his stories, so every night he made sure to tell her a new one.

Gabe was planning on leaving on his 18th birthday. He been saving for a few years. He had found out the headquarters was in Amador, he planned to ride to the nearest Whitecloaks and if needed he would travel to Amador.

It was three days before his 18th birthday.

Gabe: "I plan to leave soon father to join the Whitecloaks, Macy is a lot better. I want to fight for justice."

Ken (father): "I don't think you are ready,  we will always need your help, your duty is here. That is final." Ken had been in the army, and had gotten discharged because of a injury. He knew it all to well. While it was a honor he did not want to see his only son leave.

The next night Gabe grabbed the white cloak, along with many things he thought he would need for the travel. Before he left he slipped a note under his sisters pillow explaining what he was doing. Gabe said he would fight to the end, and to make sure he would come back to her.

Gabe slipped out of the house before daybreak and left on his journey. He had just enough to make it there...even if he used it all.

  8. *Emily*

Emily remembered that look. It was the same one Jared had when he held Michael shortly after the delivery. The look of a father, struck by awe at the love he felt for the tiny human being in his arms. Nox had that look now, and despite the child not being his by blood, Dawn was his child.

Emily smiled at Dorian's prodding at Nox to be a good host. That had been her flaw after having the baby. She forgot about everything else. All that mattered was the child. Emily knew in her heart by watching that Nox would be a good father. He already was in love with this little girl in his arms.

When the drinks were handed out, Emily took the offered glass of wine. "Is my drinking ban lifted?" She said, grinning at Jared.

Jared sighed. "Okay...one more." He smiled at her and squeezed her hand.

They all drank to family. Always an excellent toast. Emily moved and watched Nox with the baby some more. "She's beautiful, Nox."

She then turned tto the newcomer that she didn't recognize. "Emily Shale-Vanders, and this is my husband Jared. Its nice to meet you."

((Ooc: she's imtroducing herself to slade.))

  9. *Jared*

Jared smiled at Barry as he approached, still holding Emily's hand. "Yes, this is my wife Emily. Emily, this is Barry Gordon."

Emily offered her hand in a polite gesture. At the mention of his actions possibly hurting Jared, he could feel some discontent beginning to build in the Emily portion of his mind.  Jared squeezed his hand to tell her to calm down. "It's quite alright. We're all okay."

Dorian and Nox arrived and all was made clear.  The baby was to be Nox and Dorian's.  Wow.  Jared couldn't help but grin at that.

    *Emily*

Emily wasn't terribly happy that someone had put her husband in danger. Jared would have to explain sometime. Not here though, and not tonight.  She knew he would explain when the time was right. Emily took comfort in her hand interlaced with Jared.  He was so special.

BABY!!!! The baby was going to be adopted by Nox.  That made Emily forget about the potential danger her husband was in, or maybe she was just easily distracted because she was a little tipsy.  It didn't matter, this was a happy time.  Emily approached Nox and gave him a hug and kiss on the cheek.  "Congratulations Nox." She said and then moved to Dorian.  She repeated the hug and the kiss. "Congratulations Dorian."

Jared followed behind, letting go of her hand so she could hug and Jared shook their hands and offered congratulations before Emily once more grabbed his. "We should schedule a play date for Dawn and Michael sometime."

Jared spoke to the room. "Should we toast the new parents?"

  10. *Jared*

Jared laughed. "Not that I'm not shocked. I've never seen a dreykan before. It's all that soldier and police training though. Experience too - I just learned how to react faster. And I agree. The power helps a lot."

Nox and Dorian. Jared and Emily. They were alike in many ways. "I never expected to be married to a multibillinoaire either. It's strange, the people we fall in love with. But I wouldn't change it for the world. She means that much to me."

Jared clapped Nox on the back. "I was glad to walk with you. To be honest I always thought if I met you, it would have been awkward, but I didn't feel that at all. I hope this is the start of a good friendship, and sometime we have to play with fire."

Jared grinned knowing Nox would catch his drift. They went their separate ways after arriving - both to talk with their beloveds. At the offer of a drink later, Jared requested a scotch old enough to order its own scotch and arrived in the sitting room. Emily was there and he could feel in his head that she had been drinking, but was in a good mood. At least she wasn't trashed, she didn't drink that much anyways.

Others were in the room - the most notable being a woman with a baby. Jared only has eyes for his wife though.

    *Emily*

Jared arrived and Emily stood to greet him. She was feeling the effects of the alcohol - the champagne at the event and the wine she had at Dorian's place. Emily gave Jared a hug and kisses him.

"What did I say?" Jared said with a smile.

"Our last kiss wouldn't be the last." Emily smiled at him and they both sat down.

Jared took her hand and they interlaced fingers as Jared took her not yet empty wineglass. "You've had enough." He said and she pouted with a hint of a smile.

"Okay." Jared smiled at her and gave her hand a squeeze and finished off her wine.

Jared turned to the woman. "Your daughter?"

The woman laughed. "No, your wife asked the same question though."

Emily just held onto Jared and rested her head on his shoulder. She was glad he was okay.

  11. *Jared*

Jared walked with Nox, not aware of if it was helping the younger man or not.  Jared wasn't worried though.  He'd be there if Nox wanted to talk, and if he didn't, well, he was content with silence. Nox broke the silence with a statement of gratitude and a favor.  The comment about Emily having done well made him really smile though.  She had hated him so much when they first met.  Sometimes Jared thought he could still feel the slap on his left cheek.

Jared addressed the gratitude for his service first. "It really was a pleasure Nox." He meant it too.  Jared was a protector of people. "As far as Emily doing well for herself, believe it or not, she actually hated my guts when we first met, but as for your favor." Jared paused. He could show Nox and Cruz the spell for healing, but they might not be able to do it.  Jared had tried to teach all of his students in the Legion the spell and it had never worked.  It was a talent few possessed. "I can show you how to do it, but amongst my own students I've yet found anyone who can.  I believe it is something you have to have a knack for doing. I will do it, but there may be a chance it won't accomplish much."  As the light changed, the two men began to cross the street.

  12. ((OOC: Sorry about the delay - I may or may not have gotten distracted by Dragon Age.  Also thought I should explain - Jared refers to channeling as spells or magic and Saidin as mana.  The words channeling and saidin are unknown in FA, so he refers to them that way.))

    *Jared*

Jared took to the assignment Dorian had given him with a practiced ease.  The police training came back to him quickly. He found several people that seemed to be holding it together and recruited them to assist. With their help, the crowd was disperse with only a few minor issues. However, seeing that the man asking them to leave was in a military uniform, even those listened with very little fuss.

The fog had rolled in and Jared made a mental not to practice that later.  That trick could come in nifty. Jared had seized his man to pierce through the veil that and at least have some idea what was going on.  Seeing Nox with a whip was pretty intense, and Jared thought that was a cool trick; much like his firesword, but Jared would leave the whips to Nox.  Jared knew his limits and he was more likely to hurt himself than any enemy with a whip of fire.

Nox approached Jared and looked a little worse for wear.  He wasn't injured or tired.  He looked like he was angry. Nox told him he was leaving - walking home - and he could go with Nox or Dorian. "If you need someone to talk to, I'll go with you.  If you need to be alone, I'll go with D."

Nox shrugged. "Don't need to talk, just need to cool down. Can do that with or without, totally based on how fast you want to get back to your wife."

Jared thought about that.  Emily was content right now, if a little buzzed.  Comparatively to before, she was ecstatic.  She could handle a few more minutes away from him. Nox looked like he could use some company right now. "I'll go with you."

Jared let Dorian know that he'd be walking with Nox and then the two headed off.

  13. *Emily*

Jared called her and she never felt so relieved.  She knew he was alive; she could feel him in the back of her head, a constant calm despite the situation he was in, but hearing his voice was what she had needed.  Their conversation was short.  Their words would be saved until they saw each other in person.  Emily started breathing and the tears stopped, catching a glance of herself in a mirror, she saw that her makeup had been smeared by crying.  Thankfully she was with Cruz - someone she knew and wouldn't judged her for how terrible she looked right now.

"I'm sorry for falling apart like that Cruz.  Thank you, you're a good friend." She gave him a hug.

"Anytime Emily.  You want something to drink now?  Water, wine, I'm sure Nox has a beer or three in the fridge too." Cruz said.

"Some wine would be welcome." Emily gave him a smile. "Where's your bathroom? I need to fix my face."

Cruz pointed it out to her, and Emily went in, noticing the people who were in the house. She hadn't noticed during her fit. She noticed a man in a suit walking about, gave him a nod, and entered the bathroom removing her makeup kit. She fixed her makeup and heard a sound as she did - a sound very familiar to her - a crying child. For a moment, Emily freaked out.  Her child was crying, but soon enough she realized that the cries were not Michael's, and well, Michael wouldn't be here right now.  She, however, followed the sound, arriving in a room with a small baby girl and a woman.  The woman was lifting the crying baby up, a bottle was on the table next to her.  When the woman spied Emily, Emily took a step back.

"I'm sorry, didn't mean to disturb.  I heard the baby cry, and...well mother's instinct I guess." And suddenly Emily missed Michael more than ever.

The woman smiled at her, beginning to feed the baby girl. "Let me guess - mother of one - first night away from your child." Something must of shown on Emily's face.

Emily nodded.  The woman stood and walked up to her. "I remember those days well."

Emily looked at the little girl.  "She's beautiful.  Is she your daughter?"

The woman shook her head no, and the two women stood in silence.

"Emily." Cruz's voice came from behind her.  He had a grin on his face and a glass of wine.  Emily took the glass and sipped at it.

    *Jared*

The car stopped and Jared soon saw why.  More dreykan. One attacked a man, who killed it in turn.  Another was sideswiped by a vehicle and the next beheaded in the street.  Jared frowned at that.  There were onlookers - 99% of these people had no clue what a dreykan was (probably thought it was some Goth punk) - the 1% that did know was in the car with Jared. Growing up in Roswell, New Mexico, Jared heard some weird things, but 'Vampire beheaded in Moscow street' took the cake.

"Vampire looses head in the middle of a crowded Moscow street.  The tabloids will have fun with this one." Jared said, and despite his words being a joke, his tone conveyed the disapproval at how the situation was handled. Jared checked his firearm. "I have to admit, I'm at a loss for what to do.  I'll follow your lead on this one. Let me know what you need me to do."

    ((Cruz with Mat))

  14. Jared watched as Dorian helped Nox. The man was afraid of needles.  How did he ever get his tattoos. The situation showed how much Dorian meant to him however - there was a lot of trust there. Jared understood that. You trusted the soldier at  your back.  They were both hunters - and that trust had been built already - not to mention that they were lovers too. But seeing Nox squirm had made Jared feel guilty.  He could have avoided this.  Jared could have healed him. But the image of Michael in the hands of the Atharim was enough to bring him back to reality.  Jared wasn't of use to Martin like Nox was, and it wasn't a secret that Emily Shale-Vanders had a child. Using magic in front of Martin would have been a risk Jared couldn't have afforded.

Thinking of his son made him think of Emily and he was again aware of her presence in the back of his head. She was very upset - upset enough that it was becoming hard for him to not cry himself.  He needed to call her, but her Wallet was in his pocket.  He heard someone mention that Emily was probably with Cruz.  That gave him an idea.

"Dorian, can I use your Wallet to call your son.  I need to speak to my wife." Jared couldn't keep the agitation out of his voice.

Dorian handed Jared his Wallet with Cruz's information ready to go.  Jared thanked him and called. When Cruz answered, Jared spoke. "Cruz, it's Jared Vanders - I need to speak with Emily if she is there."

Cruz handed the Wallet off to Emily.  "Jared.  Are you okay?"

"Yes, hon, I'm fine.  I need you to relax okay.  I'll be there soon."

Jared heard Emily start to take some deep breaths and felt her relax in the back of his head. "Okay, Jared.  Hurry.  I love you."

    "I love you too."

Jared hung up and gave the Wallet back to Dorian who was chatting with Barry. "Barry, I'm sorry we didn't get to talk more.  Hopefully we'll get to see each other again soon." Jared nodded at him and shook his hand.

He turned to Dorian. "Could I ride with you and Nox back to your place? We don't make our driver wait around for these things."

    Dorian nodded. "Our pleasure."

They all bid their farewells and went their separate ways.  Jared was glad for the chance to talk to Nox alone.  He trusted Dorian as well. Of course he had overheard Nox telling Dorian something to that effect.  He had to get this off of his chest.  As they drove, he worked up the courage. "Nox, I have a confession to make." Jared's voice was nervous.  He liked Nox, and really didn't want to upset him. "I have some talent with healing, but with Martin there...you see, despite the fact that he was okay with you, you are useful to him.  I am not.  I couldn't risk my son ending up on an Atharim hit list.  I'm sorry - I didn't know about...I just wanted to help." Jared's voice trailed off. "The offer is on the table though.  If you want healing I'll give it."

Nox gave Jared a weak grin, "I understand, though we could have waited for the whole needle thing till we were alone."  He glared at Dorian but there was little malice in it. Nox shook his head at the offer of healing. "It's fine now, damage done.  Ladies like scars right?"  He grinned at Dorian.

Jared chuckled a bit.  He still seemed to be on Nox's good side at least, and Jared had another question. "Nox, you might know something about this.  I have no idea what Emily did to me tonight, but I know where she is - like I could walk right to her and find her with no problem.  And there's a part of her in the back of my head.  I can sense how she's feeling. Thankfully she's not nearly as agitated now.  Have you heard of anything like that?"

  15. *Jared*

Like so many battles, it was over quickly. Everyone seemed okay, except the other Atharim on the ground. Jared flipped him over, pulling out his first aid kit as he did so.  This was the reason why he always kept one with him. He had seen Nox had shot him, and wasn't sure he approved, but understood the reasoning.  Nox had probably saved the man's life by shooting him. Jared also didn't care that this man would judge him for his magical abilities.  Jared protected people and saved lives, he would do what he could.

Bullet wound to the knee, there wasn't much he could do about it, but he could stop the bleeding. Jared moved with proficiency.  He had done field medic duty before.  Eliot would need a hospital though. "I've done what I can for him. He'll need a hospital."  He turned to Nox.

"You, shirt off." Jared said as he pulled out the sutures from his pack.  Jared had some healing ability and he would use it, but despite Martin's response to Nox's use of magic, he didn't want to openly use it here.  He didn't want to risk his son being on the Atharim's lists. "And if you don't mind - sterilize this."  Jared held up the needle.

  16. *Emily*

Emily watched as Jared left. Her eyes didn't leave that spot.  She barely heard the alarms start to go off as Cruz pulled the alarm.  She kept staring as Cruz approached.

"Emily - we need to go." Cruz said to her, trying to turn her away from the door. "Dad and Nox are with him.  He'll be fine. I need you to be strong now and help me get these people out of here."

Emily looked at him, and nodded. "I can do that."

Emily and Cruz took the lead - directing people to the nearest exits.  After which she got into the car with him. "I'll take you to my home.  They'll be meeting there afterwards."

Emily didn't say anything, just kept her eyes on the mansion.  She could feel Jared in there. She could find him, but no, she had to trust him.  If Cruz said much on the ride back she didn't hear him. When they arrived she followed Cruz inside. Then it all hit.  She couldn't be strong anymore.  All she could see was her husband dead again - having to raise Michael alone.  She trusted Jared and she trusted his ability, even without magic. She latched onto Cruz and started crying into his shoulder.

Cruz took her to the couch and sat her down. "Do you want a drink or something?" Emily shook her head no, and Cruz sat down next to her. "He'll be okay, Emily." Emily just leaned her head on him and cried.

    *Jared*

Jared found himself next to one of the men that Nox had pointed out.  It was a nice reminder not to use his magic.  Jared approached him.

Martin looked him up and down and frowned, "That boy is going to get everyone he knows killed."

Jared gave the man a grin - one he had learned from Nox - and pulled out his firearm and the silencer from his breast pocket.  No need to worry the party goers with gun fire.  As he started screwing on the silencer, the alarm went off.  So much for that, but he was committed to using it now. "I don't plan to die today."

Martin nodded, "Good.  Didn't expect you would, don't make it where you are by sheer good looks."

Jared started to move forward, getting back to business. "Let's get to work before more are hurt or killed. I have a friend in there and would rather not bring back a corpse."

Martin smiled, "Nox'll be fine, he's taken one down already this week."  Martin held his gun at the ready and motioned Jared to go on ahead he'd watch his back.

Jared chuckled a bit. "I'm sure he will."  He pulled out his combat knife and held it in his left had next to the butt of the pistol.  The side of the pistol had been modified to accommodate it.  Jared like to be able to switch instantly between a gun or knife fight.

Jared took point, not sure how he felt about having an Atharim at his back.  Nox had told him right now that they were allies as long as magic wasn't involved.  As a combat mage, he'd rather use all of his advantages, but he had hidden his abilities before.  He could do so again.  The hardest part was not focusing on the portion of Emily he could feel in the back of his head.  She was extremely upset.

Jared moved with speed, but check the alcoves along the hall as he passed. "You've got my six right? Keep an eye on those doors for surprises, with three targets, I'd rather get to Nox sooner than later, but don't want to dismiss the possibility of their hiding.  Whistle for any threats."

Martin nodded, "They want Nox, they won't hide.  They tasted him already, they don't let prey go."

"Understood." Jared said.  He hadn't commonly fought monsters - except for some ghuls he came across in a Casablanca tavern. Martin knew his stuff and he would utilize his knowledge on the subject.  They were after Nox - so they probably would already be set to ambush.  With that information at hand he picked up the pace a bit.  The remaining dreykan could be in this corridor.  The hall was dark limiting vision, and although Jared could have used his magic to pierce through, Nox's warning stayed with him.  He wasn't holding his magic.  He had the sight of a normal man.  Soon enough he could see the fight between Nox and one of the creatures, it was a hideous thing, but Jared kept his cool.

He reported back to Martin calmly. "Visual on Nox and one target - no visual on the other two yet.  This hall is clear though - you think they would flank?"

    Martin nodded, "Affirmative.  Standard tactic."

"Alright - you go right - I'll free up Nox and then go left." Jared was in position to do so.  It just made sense.  He kept his senses on Martin as he took aim at Nox's dreykan.  Martin followed his lead though. The shot presented itself and Jared fired, Nox was far enough away that he wasn't worried about hitting him instead. The shot hit his target in the right shoulder and the creature stumbled back, giving Jared a chance to adjust his aim.  The second got the creature in the head.  Jared had to trust Nox to do his best as he turned to the left and saw target number two coming down the hall.

((Cruz and Martin done with Mat))

  17. *Emily*

Emily didn't like this. She could tell Jared could feel her conflict. It was weird knowing how he felt - feeling how he felt. She could sense the comfort he was trying to be for her, but he was going to fight with the Atharim.

When Nox came to give him instructions she almost felt like she was going to cry. The memory came of Jared's broken body, eyes staring into the sky. Nox gave her an encouraging smile and when he kissed her on the cheek, she whispered to him, unable to keep her voice from trembling. "I almost lost him once. Please bring him back."

    *Jared*

Emily was worried and rightly so. She had almost lost him before when she was on her way to tell him that she was pregnant with their son. Jared nodded in understanding at what Nox had told him.

It was a waiting game, but with a plan he felt more at ease. He grabbed a champagne flute and handed it to Emily. Emily was strong. He could tell she was anxious, but only because he could feel her emotions. On the outside, she was a rock. She sipped at her champagne. He remebered a time when she used to gulp her drinks when this anxious. She was growing.

They walked around, saying hello to those they passed and when Jared saw Dorian and the two Atharim he had pointed out exit through the double doors, he pulled Emily around a corner so they could have a moment of privacy. He tilted her chin up so her green eyes met his and kissed her passionately.

"That is not our last kiss. I'll be back I promise."

Emily wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you."

"I love you too." He said and kissed her again before he turned to head through the double doors. Things were about to get intense.

  18. *Jared

Jared knew about what Nox did - certain creatures were here - and the warning didn't go without notice.  His Atharim buddies were here - the kind that weren't sympathetic.  Jared nodded and smiled as Nox introduced him to Barry and Dorian.

"Mr. Vega, a pleasure!" Jared shook his hand before turning to Barry. "Nice to meet you Barry!"

He had to warn Emily about not using her magic.  She didn't use it as often as he did, but if it was necessary, she would.  She should know the danger that would mean - both to herself and their son.  As Nox left, Jared patted his side, letting Nox know that he was armed in more than one way. A soldier never went into battle with just one weapon.

"Good luck with the girl Barry - sweep her off her feet." Jared said as they moved away.

Jared moved to warn Emily, thankful he didn't have to look for her in the crowd.  He just knew where she was.  She sensed him approach and looked up.  He took her hands.

    "Trouble?" She said.

Jared nodded and spoke softly. "More than one kind.  Nox, Vega, and I should have it under control.  No special stuff though - unless needed.  There are unfriendlies."

Emily nodded in understanding. She knew what the Atharim would do if they found out, and Jared could see the anger flare through her eyes - besides feeling it in his head too. He also knew the anger was because they would dare threaten her child if this came out.

Jared leaned down to kiss her and whisper in her ear. "If this goes bad, I want you to help keep the crowd calm and get them out of here.  Understand?" Emily nodded.  It wasn't often that Jared told her what to do, but it was natural for him in a crisis situation and she trusted his judgement. "I'll get you another glass of champagne. Then we dance." Jared said.  He knew she recognized what he was doing.  It was a move to wander inconspicuously.  The situation would have to be dealt with before he could feel at ease.

  19. *Emily*

Emily stood as dinner was finished, and Jared stood next to her. Dorian had arrived, but it was Jared her eyes quickly moved too.  His eyes were moving around the room, looking for something.

    "What's wrong?" She asked.

"I'm not sure yet." Jared said calmly.

She turned him to face her. "You think they are after us."

Jared shook his head no. "I don't think so, but something is going to happen soon.  You do your duty, and I'll do mine." Emily frowned. She didn't want Jared to leave now.  She hugged him and grasped her magic.  Forming a weave of spirit, she hugged him with her power trying to keep him calm and the weave itself felt natural, but gasped at the result.

    *Jared*

His sixth sense was tingling.  It was that feeling he felt when a mission was about to go wrong, and Jared had learned to trust it.  Emily had sensed it from him. She hugged him and suddenly Jared became aware of her. He knew she was standing there, but could sense it in his head. He could feel that she was sad. Jared looked into her eyes and could tell she could feel it too. "What did you do?"

"I don't know - it seems convenient though." Emily smiled a nervous smile.

"Okay - you'll know where I am.  I'll be fine.  I'm going to find Nox, see if he knows anything that is going on okay?"

She nodded, and Jared leaned over and kissed her. "I'll come back, Emily.  I promise."

She seemed to calm a bit. "I love you."

"I know." Jared said, a teasing smile on his face.  Emily laughed a little at the reminder of the first time they had told each other of their love.

Jared spied Nox, and he could tell the man was uneasy.  He could also feel the tell-tale menace that came from another man wielding the power, and as he turned, Emily stayed in his senses. She was right.  This was convenient. Jared patted his side, checking to make sure his side arm was there.  Just because he was a combat mage, didn't mean he traveled without a gun. He arrived at Nox's position.  Jared kept calm.  It was easier when he remembered Nox's offer to train Michael.  Nox was about to find out that it wasn't necessary.

Jared seized his magic after Nox had seen him. "What is it?" He whispered to the other man.

  20. *Emily*

The dinner bell rang and Nox excused himself with Cruz. Emily and Jared headed to their table with their arms still wrapped around each other. Upon arriving at their table, Jared let go to pull out Emily's chair. Emily smiled at her gentlemanly soldier thanks as he pushed the chair back in and took his own seat.

Jared began to arrange his stuff in his usual military fashion. "Don't scarf it down now, Jared." Emily told him. "Eat slowly."

Jared was a fast eater usually, but they had to fill out the time. Jared smiled at her and nodded before he cut into his chicken and took a bite. Emily did the same with their fish. Jared remained quiet while Emily chatted with their neighbors a little bit.The real mingling would begin later.

Emily turned to Jared about half-way through the meal. "You doing okay? You want to mingle with me afterwards or talk to Nox?" She knew the mingling would be boring for him

Jared kissed her. "I'm fine, Sweety. I think I'll hang out with my fellow shelp. Unless you need some arm candy?"

Emily smiled and squeezed his hand. "That will be fine. As long as i get a dance later. I'm going to call Mara and make sure Michael is okay."

Jared held her hand. "He's okay. She would have called if something happened."

"I...I still wanna check." Jared handed Emily her wallet and it buzzed. "I guess I don't have to. She just sent a message. Everything is fine and he's asleep."

Jared gave her that grin of his. "I told you. I know its your first time away from him for awhile. Try to relax. Mara will do fine." Emily had started working fromhome to take care of their son.

Emily squeezed his hand and kissed him on the cheek before returning to her food. Jared was right. She had to relax. It wasn't often that they got to go out together anymore. This was a night for fun.

((No Jared POV for now...please continue ))

  21. *Jared*

Jared dismissed Nox with an understanding nod as he left to take a phone call.  Emily turned to Cruz and greeted him warmly with a hug. "Cruz, it's wonderful to see you again.  Give your father my regards, and tell him I miss your dinner parties, we'll have to plan one out again sometime."

Jared stood by quietly.  He wasn't the jealous sort, and this is a part of what Emily did.  When Nox returned, Jared nodded at him. "No need for apologies, Nox." Emily was still talking with Cruz about something, it didn't really matter what. "As a fellow not-rich person - do you ever get used to being at these things? I mean - it's not that I'm bored - I just feel so out of place." Jared gave a laugh.  He had never expected to not be the bread winner of his family. Not that Emily was really a bread winner - she just had money.  At twenty-nine, she could retire and not have to worry about anything.

Emily returned and took Jared's left arm again as Jared began to answer Nox's question. "I started off in the Marines - MARSOC to be specific.  After that, I was SWAT for the Roswell Police Department before joining the Legion Premiere.  I served in Sierra Leone, and now as a commissioned officer, I spend my time back and forth between Sierra Leone and Casablanca." Jared let loose a sigh. "We've managed to stay out of this war so far, but as an American and a CCD, I'm not looking forward to that changing."

He felt Emily's arm move to wrap around his waist and instinctively, his went around her shoulder as she rubbed his side.  She knew how he felt about the war.  He didn't want to pick a side, but someday soon he would have to.  He gave her an encouraging smile and a brief kiss.  He was fine - for now. He could see the worry in her eyes though.  She knew that sooner or later, he would be drawn into the war, and she worried about him and their son.  Emily said that Michael looked just like Jared, but whenever he looked at Michael, he just saw his mother.  Should the war come, Jared would have to come back.  Emily had already brought him back from the brink of death.  He wasn't sure she could do it again.

    *Emily*

Emily returned and Jared and Nox were talking about his service - and inevitably the war. Emily knew what his thoughts were about the war.  She knew he had nightmares about it.  He would probably have one tonight now. When Jared turned and gave her a brief kiss, she changed the subject.  She didn't want him talking about the war. "So Nox, you're with Dorian Vega now. I can't say I expected that, but I'm very happy for you." She smiled.  She had meant it. They were a cute couple.

"What my wife is trying to say," Jared said. "Is that she apologizes for trying to make you feel uncomfortable earlier.  She likes to do that sometimes.  Regardless of your past history, there are no hard feelings at all."

Emily squeezed Jared. "I can speak for myself Mr. Vanders!" She said, her tone humorous.  She had gotten him to change his thoughts, perhaps the nightmares would stay away. "Honey, do you have my Wallet? I want to show him the picture."

Jared produced her Wallet quickly, and she found the picture.  One of their little family.  Emily held a smiling Michael, and Jared stood behind her, his hand on her shoulder.  "Our son, Michael - 18 months." She trusted that Nox wouldn't speak of this to his Atharim buddies.  God help him if he did.
