Football became an Olympic sport at the Paris 1900 Games, with women joining in at Atlanta 1996. In Rio, 16 countries will battle for the men’s title and 12 for the women’s gold medals. Matches are played in seven stadiums across the country.

Men's competition

The competition consists of two stages; a group stage followed by a knockout stage.

Group stage

Teams are divided into four groups of four countries, playing every team in their group once. Three points are awarded for a victory, one for a draw. The top two teams per group qualify for the quarterfinals.

RESULTS

I must confess to not being a soccer fan, but since my country (South Africa) happened to open the Olympic games in their match against Sweden in women's soccer (football), I thought I'd give this a bash :)

To my utter surprise, the South African women's team did not disgrace themselves at all! They lost 1-0 against Sweden, but they player well.

The results thus far are:

Men:

Iraq 0 - 0 Denmark

Honduras 3 - 2 Algeria

Brazil 0 - 0 South Africa

Mexico 2 - 2 Germany

Portugal 2 - 0 Argentina

Sweden 2 - 2 Colombia

Fiji 0 - 8 South Korea

Nigeria 5 - 4 Japan

Women:

France 4 - 0 Columbia

Sweden 1 - 0 South Africa

Brazil 3 - 0 China

Canada 2 - 0 Australia

Zimbabwe 1 - 6 Germany

USA 2 - 0 New Zealand

So I never understood why American Football was called Football.  There is literally nothing in common between these two sports.

So today for the first time in my life I watched about five minutes of Rugby.

It's basically American Football with way fewer rules and no passing.  <_<

I tuned in just in time to see the shootout between Brazil and Australia last night.  It was fun to see the 'home' team win; I couldn't get over how packed that stadium was compared to the modest crowds turning out for all the other events.

I'm also kind of glad the US lost after all the poor sportsmanship they showed afterwards.  <_<

Just a lot of spiteful comments about how Sweden were a terrible team who didn't deserve to win and the US was robbed of its rightful spot in the next round.  Sore losers.

Ain't that the truth. I was so disappointed when the US women lost, but it was a fair/good game and Solo is a sore loser. She always has been.

I'm looking forward to the games coming up.
