I'm with TGlem's on Guinness. I used to dislike it because I didn't enjoy stouts very much - but now I dislike it because I just find it utterly boring compared to other stouts, even on tap.

Thanks. You were right about Lienenkugles Summer Shandy. It would be a nice sit outside sunny day or even a picnic type drink. The little touch of lemon is nice. Wifey likes it more so I'm sure I'll get it again.

 

I also tried Devils Backbone Azrael. It was okay and reminded me a bit of Smithwick's but with a much lighter finish.

Also, I brew my own beer and have collaborated with three different breweries now.  Any homebrewers out there?

I need some advice. After some further discussion with a friend who is in to beer (might be influenced by studies in Germany and England, and living in portland), I have realized I like pale ale best. Especially Apple ale. Don't cringe, but I like Mikes try at it.

 

So.... Any suggestions on what to try besides mikes that is comparable?

I'm assuming you've had Woodchuck Reserve, yes?

 

A lot of better craft beer places will also carry Crispin. They make some really nice ciders.

 

Finally, Angry Orchard is actually surprisingly drinkable. They are owned by Sam Adams so expect that sort of mass appeal type of beverage.

 

A bit harder to find [unless you are in the distribution area] but New Glarus makes a REALLY good Apple Ale. If you ever see it buy it.

I've really not tried much. I've never liked beer very much, so I've stuck mostly to mixed drinks and a few wines. I realized though, that I like about the first 1/2 bottle of a lot of beers-- so while it is icy cold, but once it warms up to just very cold, I don't like it as much... but the apple ale I tried was an exception.

 

I'll write those suggestions down, along with Redds, and see what I can find when I go looking for some this weekend!

I think for next year we should make a few changes:

 

1. No brewery should be represented more than once. [Chimay Blue and Chimay Tripel?]

2. Special releases and one-offs should be avoided as much as possible. [Great Pumpkin has one release in the fall - that's it.]

3. Availability needs to be weighed. [i'm probably one of VERY few people that could even access fresh Heady Topper since you have to make a trip to VT to get it - yet Founders, which is one of the more widely available breweries, has no representation.]

4. Beers should be brewery defining when possible. [Goose Island makes a lot of good beers but they are defined by BCS - which I realize breaks the special release rule but is the exception that proves the rule.]

5. Partial points could be awarded for right brewery but wrong beer. ["I can't get Duck Rabbit Brown but I had their milk stout!"]

6. Finally, extra points for BEER PORN beers - with proof.  I had a Westy 12, for example, which is arguably the best beer in the world.  Post a self taken pic and let you drool.  Westy 12, Dark Lord, Utopia, 4+ year vertical of something like Yeti or Big Foot would all qualify]

I'd rather not say, if that's alright.  I don't know how sensitive some of the gypsie brewers are to this sort of thing.  One of the breweries is mentioned in this thread, though.  Maybe I'll point you to an article or something after our next collaboration with a startup that we're doing?

 

We'll be brewing a barrel aged Old Ale.  We got the barrel from a local[ish] distillery right here in upstate NY.  We've already brewed a Speedway Stout clone in the barrel.  It's pretty sick trying to organize 70 gallons of brew across 7 homebrew systems.  Never mind the fact that the grain bill on that RIS is fairly absurd.

If it's Jeppe then I would say that's probably a good idea. And yeah, that would be sweet.

 

I've only ever brewed once on a professional system and it was with Wrecking Bar Brewpub out of Atlanta. It was really cool to brew on a legit system and even though ESB's are hardly the most difficult beers to make, it turned out pretty well.

Let's get something straight; ANY well crafted beer is pretty difficult to make.  If it was a good ESB, be proud of yourself.  There's a LOT that can go wrong between sanitization - fermentation - and drinking the libation!

That's fair, I just meant that the grain bill and hop additions were very straightforward. Well done, but simple. I love ESBs so I was every happy with our take on it - Matueka and Citra.

 

 

What I'm really excited about is a new brewery opening in Atlanta called Orpheus. Two months old and their producing quality sours and saisons. They're going to be the East Coast's Jester King.

That's what Shmaltz thinks, too. They are souring everything. TBF - Funky Jewbilation is pretty good and Sweet 16 is legit. They also added a trappist yeast strain to a rye IPA and called it St Lenny's. The sour beer market is kind of small if not fanatical. We experiment with brett a lot. Like "Sweaty Bretty" is a really good brett saison - though we do start fermentation with a nice clean cal ale yeast.

I like your suggestions for next year also.  Solid thoughts.  One thing we are kicking around is making this a beer & wine club for those who prefer wine.

The one thing you probably don't want to do is turn this into another Untappd because I agree that this is probably a better format for beer RECOMMENDATIONS rather than for keeping a beer tally.

I don't know that I'll have a chance to try Mystery Romp since I know Crooked Letter doesn't distribute anywhere near me.  That said, I'm a "porter" fan.  It sounds, from the description, like they are straddling the line between a robust porter [at the high end of ABV] and a baltic porter.  If that's the case, Great Lakes Brewing has a beer called Edmund Fitzgerald that would rock your socks.  Sounds like maybe less coffee and more chocolate in the Fitzgerald but just an exquisite example of everything I want in a robust porter.

I've had Edmund Fitzgerald and it is good.  Very good.  I think Mystery Romp is better, purely from a clean finish point of view.  It is somehow flavorful, robust, and yet easy to drink on a hot summer's day.  Aaahh.
