True Detective

I was wondering if anyone around here had seen HBO's new show True Detective. I have been watching it form its first episode and it is completely mind blowing. It stars Matthew Macaugheyand Woody Harrelson, both at the absolute peak of their game. The show follows two detectives through 3 time periods, the first takes place in 2012 is centered around the two detectives relating the facts of the case of Dora Lang that took place in 1995, and also tells of the dissolution of their partnership in 2002. I have found this show to the absolute best thing going on TV at this moment, its is a taunt and riveting character study of to polar opposite men and their disfunctions, and then eventually takes a hard left turn into occult territory. The occult stuff is actually just Weird Tales with lots of allusions to Chambers' The King in Yellow, and of course Lovecraft. This is a link to an io9 article if you are unfamiliar with Chambers work or just Weird Tales in general http://io9.com/the-one-literary-reference-you-must-know-to-appreciate-1523076497 . If your looking for the next great entry into this so called Golden Age of television, here it is.

These 3 quotes sum up this shows bleak philosphy quite well and have been completely freaking me out.

In eternity, where there is no time, nothing can grow. Nothing can become. Nothing changes. So death created time to grow the things that it would kill and you are reborn but into the same life that you've always been born into. I mean, how many times have we had this conversation, detectives? Well, who knows? When you can't remember your lives, you can't change your lives, and that is the terrible and secret fate of all life. You're trapped, by that nightmare you keep waking up into.

To realize that all your life, all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain, it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream you had inside a locked room – a dream about being a person. And, like a lot of dreams, there’s a monster at the end of it.

...The doctor said she didn't feel a thing; went straight into a coma. Then, somewhere in that blackness, she slipped off into another deeper kind. Isn't that a beautiful way to go out, painlessly as a happy child? Trouble with dying later is you've already grown up. The damage is done, it's too late

I keep toying with watching it but I haven't yet.

Is it very good? What other shows could it compare to?

It's not "The Wire Good" but its pretty close.

Woody And Mc, nailed it. It starts off.. I don't want to say slow, but by the end of the first episode, it should start to hook you.

Hello Newman.... Hello Jerry... Seinfeld is comedic genius. Raymond too.

Loved True Detective, kind of skeptical the ending, but that was really the only downer for me. It doesn't touch "The Wire" ..... yet... three or four more seasons at this caliber and it might be on the same pedestal.
