DRAGONMOUNT

A WHEEL OF TIME COMMUNITY

Justice - Heron mark.

Recommended Posts

The order of swords in Randland:

1. The basic, average sword. The sword every average warrior uses daily.

2. The mundane heron marked sword. Made by any highly skilled blacksmith, given to a 'modern' day master of the blade.

3. Power Wrought Sword. Very common at one time, made during the AOL (and Trolloc Wars?) for the average soldier. (Lan's Sword)

4. Heron Marked Sword made with the Power. Rand's 1st and 2nd swords. Given to Blade Masters when originally made.

5. Justice. Unique amongst all swords. Though, apparently not power wrought. I can't remember. Obviously, the sword will play some major roll in Rand's relations with the Seanchan.

That point does seem to indicate that heron-marked swords already meant "blademaster" in Hawkwing's time, Sid. Although there are other possible ways that it could have evolved differently, Occam's Razor points to your reasoning.

Be'lal carries a heron marked blade of power. It is a tradition from the AoL, it was around in Hawkwings time.

I agree and think what you think--but it could be something he adopted since waking--after all he is only mimicing Rand in creating that sword.

He does show understanding of the Heron symbol. Obviously this could be a post-waking revelation, but I am thinking it is an AoL thing.

this topic is pointless, not all blademasters have a heron marked sword. maybe hawkwing was a blademaster, maybe not, it doesn't matter. he had an iconic sword. lan, who is questionably (barely questionably) the greatest swordsman living in their world carries a sword of kings (there should be a direct trope for that) which does not have a heron mark. there is no evidence to suggest that hawkwing was a blademaster, and it doesn't matter if he was. the only interesting thing about his sword was that it was made for use with one hand, and it has an iconic name.

edit: when rj was alive i had always hoped that after the series came out rj might put out a version of the full kereathon cycle in high chant, a version of it reminiscent of ancient stories in our real world, like gilgamesh. or the original odyssey. that would have been awesome. i put the thought here because thinking about their history made me think of our own.

Hawking very likely was a blademaster. There was that legend about him winning 100 duels in a single day (although Thom gave that as an example of how legends aren't always right.) Still, he had a reputation for being a deadly swordsman, and based on our other examples being Ta'varen seems to strongly correlate with being baddass in general, heh.
