Hey guys. I post here every now and then, but I spend most of my time elsewhere.

Well I remember watching Mafia games here in the past, but I really didn't understand the concept.

Anyway, I ended up watching games on another forum, and finally started playing recently.

I'm still.a noob. But I noticed some differences and being new I'm not quite sure what to kMs of them

What do you guys think about these two major differences.

Now please understand I'm not criticizing or trying to push for change.

More looking at veteran opinions of different game mechanics.

The biggest difference is that on the other forum, once everyone signs up, everyone is PMed the login name MD password of a random alt. They keep on hand about 30 alt names that are reused each new game.

No one knows who is playing who. This seems to heavily alter the nature of the games in comparison.

What do you guys think about that ?

The second change is basically time. Days are 36 hours, nights are 4 to 12 hours.

Imo, it speeds up the games, whether that's better or worse.

What do you guys think of that?

And what are the benefits to longer days/nights and using real login names?

1. That's to avoid meta reads. I think it's almost impossible to measure the effect of meta in the first place. I'd say whether the alts make a difference or not is up to you to decide really. It also allows the mod to play with roles you otherwise wouldn't be able to use such as a role that lets you log into the other account and "control" that player or whatever.

2. I have played chat games that only lasted like 10-15 minutes and I've played games that lasted months. Both are good IMO. The difference is you let the town have more of a chance to work things out and give the mafia more opportunities to slip up with longer deadlines. Sometimes this can cause a game to lag if people aren't taking advantage of the time which is why if you want a faster paced game shorter deadlines are the way to go.

Had to look up 'Meta.'

Yeah 'meta' isn't allowed.

Do you guys find it easy to distinguish between a specific persons playstyle as to how it differs depending on if they're Scum or Town?

Another big question I have is: Do any of you find yourselves more prone to believing certain people over others? And do you ever develop any tentacles towards favoritism of certain players ?

After you play enough, you can tell what a person usually does and what that same person does when he is mafia. i am a noob at online mafia, but i have played so many mafia games in person that I know that. We can definitely tell when someone is mafia a lot of time because of what they usually do. Favoritism is usually avoided because the roles can go to anybody. All friendships should be thrown aside in mafia.

A lot of us think we can and are wrong just as often (if not more often) than we're right.

I think some people are better at explaining their thoughts than others and this leads to them often being town leaders regardless of their alignment.

I'm not sure what you mean by favoritism exactly. Do you mean would I give a friend the benefit of the doubt just because they are my friend? No. Or were you asking if I have favorite targets for certain things like for example certain people I like to kill early or investigate as cop. If so then yes. I try to eliminate people who can read me easily as scum and investigate people I have trouble reading as cop and things like that.

One definition of favoritism I find myself guilty of has to do with players I'd prefer to play with. Some have proven in the past to be inactive, or just plain anti-social. I don't show favoritism in-game though if that's what you mean, I'd lynch my mother if I thought she were Mafia.

these are called Alt games. we've had a hand full of them ran here on DM, last one being Kivs Avatar Mafia. theres between 30 and 40 alt handles with WoT related names here on the site.

some poeple like them, others done. its jsut personal preferance.

thsi si fine for the chat forum, but on a site like this becuase you have multiple people playingin different time zones you need at a minimum 24 hrs for night to allow everyone a chance to chekc in.

for instance, if your in the EST and have a 4 hour deadline then your night ends before a person playig in Claifornia possibly has the chance to check in.

real login names = meta. while i dont like using it as a basis for lycnhing it does help in scum hunting and determining if you shoudl flag a person or not.

longer cycles = chance for all people to play no matter of time zones
