About that lost hand...

after rand loses his left hand, he mourns the fact that he cant use the sword. my thought is, whats wrong with using a flow/weave of air, connected to the stump, in the shape of a hand, and have that as a substitute? then just make it so that no matter what he can manipulate that flow/weave, he has a perfect substitute for his missing hand.

I suppose the closest comparison to this would be his creation and use of a sword out of the One Power. I think a hand would be far more difficult to manipulate. Where a sword is solid and immobile, a hand needs to be dexterous and be capable of making very complex and minute movements. Making that strictly out of the OP would require incredible focus and concentration and likely would distract from whatever else he needs to be doing (such as fighting with a sword). The complexity of it would just make it unfeasible.

Now, creating a bionic hand that uses the OP to connect it to the body's nervous system and to work functionally? I'd say that may have been possible with AoL technology (though they might have been able to regrow a new hand entirely with their tech (not Heal a hand with the OP)), but would require manufacturing tech that's far beyond the means of what they have in the current times.

The only practical aspect of Rand's swordsmanship at this point in the series is that it is independent of wielding the Power. Even when denied the Power, like in Far Madding, Rand is still far from defenseless. If he needed to rely on the Power as a crutch for his swordsman skills then what's the point of even using a sword? It'd be useless in his hand without the Power and a sword is only useful to Rand when denied the Power.

It is stated somewhere, maybe one of the multitues of interviews, just can't rememeber where, that there are one handed sword forms for either shorter bladed or shorter hilted swords, so Rand's abilities aren't competely wasted, he just has to spend some time learning said forms. When he has the time to do this is another topic entirely.

He could just make a sword out of OP and whirl it around with OP, without actually having a hand. I could see this being faster, having longer reach and all around better than having an actual sword in an actual hand.

Though some people might call that cheating. D:
