hello smart computer people.

so lets say i got this worm or virus or something i think from a family website that seems to hack my address book and send out emails with sort of personalized, by location, links to everyone in it....

how bad is that? and how bad is it for the recipients?

what do i do?

there was no .exe and no .pdf and i didn't click on anything in the email i'm assuming i got it from... and yet, the emails ahve been sent out, most showing in my sent folder, many rejected by the recipient's email server, but many got through.

so... help?

also... if you got one... really really sorry.... :(

Is it sending from a webmail like Yahoo or Gmail? Or Email client like Outlook? If webmail, Change your password. Usually solves the problem pretty quick.

Just send out a mass email to everyone explaining it and telling them not to click on any strange links you send them until further notice.

yahoo... from the ipad. kaspersky found nothing on the pc... my stepfather says it's using the ipad like a bot to spam with and this thing it sent out isn't dangerous but since it has that access the next thing it sends out could be... i don;t know of any antivirus for the ipad, do you?

Mmm... seems more likely that your password for Yahoo was hacked. This wouldn't be from a virus or a worm. I don't have an iPad, so I can't recommend an anti-virus, but they are pretty darn secure. The infrastructure is such that the operating system will only allow code that is from the App Store to run on it rendering the need for antivirus moot since bad code wouldn't be allowed to run, especially if it is something as simple as sending out spam mail. I'm sure there are some bad stuff, but it is probably a lot more malicious and probably aimed at corporate ipads.

Change your password to something secure and figure out if the problem continues.

it's a trojan worm, i guess? he says they get in without the password... it was secure. i changed it to something else secure. but he says they've got some malware in there now, and though this mailing was harmless there's nothing to stop them putting something harmful in the next one. he says they only access the address book, nothing with the password, and he's kind of a hackery trolly old guy so i believe him...

this thing has gone around everyone from my family's stupid website... and now the world... really sorry world, i always knew my family would lead to armageddon somehow...

thanks very much for the support and good wishes, tho :)

my fingers are crossed.

I agree with BG here, apple products are pretty virus-proof because they have totalitarian control of EVERYTHING happening. not to say that they are virus proof, just that most virus makers won't waste their time on making apple viruses when windows viruses are easier to make, spread around and have a much larger number of people to spread to.
