So, how freaking awesome is it that the epigraph at the beginning of the book comes from Loial's book?

Spoilers from that alone include:

1. Loial survives the LB!

2. Ogier obviously don't open the Book of Translation and leave!

3. Loial finishes his book!

4. Loial speaks to the Stump (still hope we get to see this scene actually happen)

What else?

That, to me, is more exciting than any of the other stuff that we know from the Prologue so far.

Other interesting things from that:

1. The stedding are even being effected now by the Pattern failing.

2. The dead Ogier can't enter the stedding. I assume this is also true of humans, though the dead Ogier seem to want in, considering the fact that they stand around it.

3. What changed Covril's mind?

4. Did Loial write other books about the other ta'veren? Or is everything he wrote included in the one book called The Dragon Reborn?

Is any one else getting a serious Sancho Panza Vibe off of Bulen?

Also I'm pissed at Lan.

"Al'Lan t'al'Mera Mandragoran I name thee Hypocrite and Liar, Coward and Thief."

"I say thee again, Hypocrite. Well dist thou teach unto a youth and farmboy, a son of Chiefs and Queens, that 'Duty was heavier than a mountain' and he has shouldered his burden though it be the whole word and the people therein and all the deaths that come or not for his merely being and yet thou wilt not recognize your duty, thou Uncrowned King, to even so much as one life that would willingly stand at your side and help hold back the hordes in defense of those he loves. Verily thou art a Hypocrite."

"Again I say thee Liar. Thou dist plead 'War' unto thy wife to leave her side and go and face Trollocs at the Gap because the Rulers of the Borderlands were not marshaling their forces. But in truth thou didst merely wish to return to you boyhood haunts for one last hurrah before they were gone for good. Verily thou art a Liar."

"I say the Again, Coward. Because thou dost refuse to 'Lead men to their Deaths' where they might stand as a Bastion against the Forces of Darkness and Shield before their homes and families and instead would rather leave them to their deaths when the Hordes break over their lands like tidal wave and leave all behind them broken and devoured, so you can 'cast your solitary defiance' into the face of the ravening locusts of the Lord of the Grave like a spoilt child stamping his foot and declaiming 'IT'S NOT FAIR'. Verily thou art a Coward"

"And lastly, I say thee Thief. A rare Woman whose worth is indeed far above Rubies has given thee her heart. And though that heart breaks to send the away from her and into danger, because it was thy Duty yet she has done so. And though thou dost protest to love her yet when she has made all provision within her power to see thee safe to her side once more thou dost fain to flee her gift as a sneak thief doth flee the watch, so you can cast the life thou dist promise her on thy wedding night at the feet of thy old mistress. Verily thou art a Thief."

My knowledge of the diction comes from The Bard and the Bible. The form I stole from John Ringo and filled to my own need. I read a truly awesome Insult at the end of There Will be Dragons and I've been dying to find a place to adapt it.

I enjoyed the fact that we got to see a sample before i go buy me a prologue for mah kindle. The coolest part was hands down, Loial's goods. The lan part was just a teaser in my opinion and fairly useless until we get the whole scene.

Can someone briefly run down the Galad pov from Brandon's reading? I think it was in this thread on the old DM but with this rollover it seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur.

It was linked at the bottom of the excerpt I typed (which was linked above).

Thanks Terez. Also, I was wondering if you would mind copying and pasting your write up and reposting it here from theoryland? Just so it is here in this thread as well for quick reference and in case people don't have accounts on both sites. Thanks.

EDIT:

The following is Terez's write up from the prologue reading at DragonCon. I copy.pasted it from Theoryland so it is in this thread to reference or peruse at everyone's leisure. As most of us know from the warning beforehand, during D.M.'s transition the recent stuff could not be saved so I guess it makes sense to put it in here now. A huge thank you to her for writing this up for those of us who could not be there, and thanks for permission to copy it over to here.

I am going to write a more detailed report on the prologue reading, but for now, a bit about the two scenes he read:

1. Lan is riding across Saldaea alone. By the end of his scene, he has a friend (Bulen, from New Spring), and there is news of more gathering in Kandor. Lan is still determined to avoid others, riding to the Gap alone.

2. Galad and his men are lost in a swamp. As they come out of the swamp, they run into Asunawa, who has 10,000 fresh troops to Galad's 7000 exhausted ones. The scene ends with Galad taken for questioning by Asunawa and being beaten until he passes out, but Asunawa agreed to his terms. Looking like Byar and Bornhald will probably ally with Perrin to get Galad out of this trap. Also, Galad has plans to go to Andor.

Also, he skipped over one POV because it was very long and he said very cool, and he skipped over another because it was 'incredibly spoilerish'.

I think you are right but this little blurb only proves point #4. Don't forget that Loial sent his notes away with Faile before the final battle at Emond's Field, the same thing could have happened prior to Tarmon Gaidon. So while I think you are correct in your assumptions, they are only assumptions and Loial's survival is by no means confirmed.

You don't need a Theoryland account to read the thread, and anyone can copy-paste it here if they like.

RJ always said the he connects the most with Loial so there's always the possibility that he dies before he finishes his book xP

Ouch! I suppose ya'll are right though, the epigraph doesn't PROVE anything. But it seems likely to me that Loial didn't finish his book until after all was said and done.
