[MOVIE] Rome (yes, that HBO series)

Personally this I love this news...

 

Fans of HBO's "Rome" will delight in the good news today that the film version of the short-lived but fascinating series is progressing.

 

Ray Stevenson, who played Titus Pullo on the show, told Movieweb this week during "Punisher: War Zone" DVD promotion that "The script is in full development... We could go into production in a year, or it could be as quick as six months. Who knows? It will happen. At least it is no longer a rumor. From what I have heard, they are nearing the end of script development."

 

The show famously dealt with some pretty boundary pushing elements, will the movie go even further? "You have to ask Bruno Heller. Bruno is the one writing the movie, thankfully. I don't think anybody else could write the movie. It will be Bruno at the helm. That guy has a soft spot for Pullo and Vorenus. I don't think he will let the ball drop. I don't think he will disappoint. He never pulled his punches with the hard drama or the social status, or the action sequences. He put full honesty into the characters."

Now where the hell are those rumored Deadwood movies?

 

The Rome set burned down last year and was most of the show's budget. I wonder if they're going to rebuild for the movie, or change where it's set.

Will it be set after the events in the series?  Can't have Vorenus and Marc Antony if it is.

 

If it takes place during the series continuity we already know how the people turn out.

A small part of the set was destroyed by fire, but not all of it. The set has continued to be used in other productions, such as an episode of Doctor Who last year.

 

My preference was always for a story set during the Battle of Alesia, just before the first season, so we have Caesar and Antony and we see Vorenus and Pullo as antagonists. But there is plenty of scope between episodes of the series (sometimes years pass between episodes, especially in Season 2) for a new, stand-alone story to be inserted.

McKidd says a feature film of that series is also being mulled.

Only a small part of the set was damaged by the fire, and that was replaced. The set is still standing and still being used for documentaries and other projects, like the episode of DOCTOR WHO they filmed there.
