This week we move into the last pairing of the 2nd Round of the Battle of the Bands as the Quarter-Final draw in completed. In the penultimate fixture, we have the Champions of Rock and Pop battling it out for a place in the last 8!

The Champion of Rock... LED ZEPPELIN

Led Zeppelin, it is one of the most, if not the most, recognized names in rock and roll today.  While they are not credited with the introduction of rock to the world, they played a critical part in the transformation from classical rock to modern rock.  The band officially formed in London, England, in August 1968 and consisted of Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (vocals), John Paul Jones (bass guitar, keyboards) and John Bonham (drums).  They enjoyed widespread success and popularity up until the death of drummer John Paul Jones in September of 1980.  At this time, the band had already become a rock and roll icon, releasing eight studio albums and playing thousands of sold out shows, many of which had record breaking attendances for the time.  Since their breakup in 1980, Led Zeppelin songs can still be heard everyday on radio stations throughout the world, thus showing that their style, influence, and songs are indeed timeless.

Good Times Bad Times – Led Zeppelin

Ramble On – Led Zeppelin II

Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin III

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin IV

Going to California - Led Zeppelin IV

The Champion of Pop...THE BEATLES

The Beatles were a pop and rock group from Liverpool, England. The band are recognized for leading the mid-1960s musical "British Invasion" into the United States. Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll and homegrown skiffle, the group explored genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. The Beatles are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles #1 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

The category of "Pop music" is a bit misleading, as Pop stands for popular music. When looking into this category, you will find artists that are tagged as pop....simply because they do not fit into any one category. We went with the Beatles because, simply put, they are among the most successful groups of all time.

There you go - the two champions of Rock and Pop. All you now need to do is pick who you want to win (please highlight in some way or another) and go through to the next stage of the Knock out and one step closer to the Grand Final! You have until Monday 4th August 2008 to make your choice!

I have to agree with Maj...... Some still sound otherworldly and most others still hold up as well as they did when released.... As an influence they were without peer. LZ as much as I still love their music, cannot say that.

Gonna have to go with The Beatles on this one.  Zeppelin is fantastic, but as some have already said, they were ahead of their time, and one of the most influential bands ever.  Their writing and style paved the way for most classical and modern rock styles and music that we enjoy today.
