Created in 1985 under the name "Majesty", Dream Theater was originally created by three men in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. John Myung, John Petrucci, and Mike Portney began the band as students and then eventually dropped out of school and pursued their music career. Since then there have been some member changes, but the original founders of the group are still there. Aside from the original members, the current group has James LeBrie and Jordan Rudess.

Dream Theater is one of the most successful progressive metal bands since the height of metal in the 1970's. Their best efforts in the U.S. have been Images and Words(1992) which reached #61 on the Billboard Top 200. Then came at #32 Awake (1994). Their newest release Systematic Chaos (2007) debut at #19. Dream Theater has sold 2 million albums in the U.S. and over 8 million albums and DVD's worldwide.

Throughout their career, Dream Theater has remained mostly underground, feeding off of support from their fans. Their shows worldwide have gotten bigger and better each year. The band and its members have won many awards.

Nice post Clim.  Would you have any links or song names you would suggest so I could take a listen?

Fans of harder rock, and heavy metal should definitely enjoy this(if they don't already know them...lol).  There is a good instrumentation in the songs and they have been very succesful while maintaining that underground feel.  ;)

Well, I had never heard of Dream Theater unitl now! But that is going to change. I'm currently listening to some of their live stuff on YouTube, and I am liking it. When I get the chance, I'll definitely be putting some of their music on my iPod.

*gasps*  Someone else who knows who Dream Theater is!!! *tackles Clim in a big hug*  A friend of mine got me hooked on them a few years back.

My first exposure to Dream Theater was actually an anime movie DMZ: The History of Trunks. Several of their songs were put on the soundtrack and since then they've quickly become one of my favorite bands.

Thanks for the links Nae!!! *tacklehugs*

I really wish Dream Theater were more main stream so people could hear how truly awesome they are. But then, they'd probably become to commercialized and won't be making the great music they make now.

Anybody who reads the reviews at the band boards knows that I am a HUGE DT fan!  Great post Clim.  These guys are the unsung heroes of the musical world in my opinion.  An interesting side point of note here, I remember reading once that these guys have the highest ratio of musician/non-musician fans in the world!

Considering how underground you said they were, I was extremely surprised to find how many albums they had out over here in the U.K. in HMV when I was browsing there last week. Sadly, I didn't buy any as none were in the offer section, and I am definitely an offer (i.e. 2 CDs for £10) person.

Dream theatre ared definately one of those bands that have a good sound.

I'd say that pull me under would have to be one of my favorites though a change of seasons I absolutely hated, way too long for one song.
