"Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans" is the title for the third installment in Sony's Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment's horror series reports the trades.

 

Creature FX creator Patrick Tatopoulos will make his directorial debut with the prequel, which starts production in January in New Zealand.

 

The story is set in the Dark Ages and traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires and their one-time werewolf slaves, the Lycans.

 

A young Lycan named Lucian emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor, the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Sonja, in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.

 

Michael Sheen will reprise his role of Lycan master Lucian. Bill Nighy also will return as vampire elder Viktor. Rhona Mitra ("The Number 23") is joining the cast as Viktor's daughter Sonja.

 

Kate Beckinsale will not appear in the prequel. Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films, will produce. Danny McBride, who co-wrote the first two screenplays with Wiseman, penned the third script.

I have to ask... is a prequil, really necisary? I mean, they covered the concept of the backstory pretty damned well... I think more people want to know what happened to the vamps/wolves after the whole 'killing the master vamp/wolf' that happened in underworld 2... (You know, how they said killing the master vamp/wolf would kill all other vamps/wolves...

Hell they gave a good idea of how things were back then with the little flashback/dream they had in the first movie with "Sonja" dying.

How can they do a 3rd one thats not a prequal? They've gotten rid of the Vampires and Werewolves entirely, and guess what the first two movies are based off of.

Well since they stole so many ideas from White Wolf, they could always tap more into it and have Mage's come out and try to kill the two that survived. 

 

I don't know how well the prequel will work at all.  Like most have pointed out they already covered the back story pretty well.  Not sure how well it will work with everyone knowing how the movie will probably end.
