Machin Shin

Is Machin Shin good evil or niether? or could it be the souls of people?

I could be wrong (and will likely be lynched by half the people on the forum) but i think that Machin Shin is EVIL! I remember that they spend a lot of time running from it as it 'devours them' if it catches them.

The Ways were made by the male Aes Sedai as thanks to the Ogiers for sheltering them during the Breaking.  Of course you probably know that. Since Saidin was tainted by the Dark One by that time, Machin Shin is thought to be a result of that tainting of Saidin.  At least that's what Loial says in TEOTW.  So I'd have to go with the others that say that Machin Shin is indeed EVIL.

I'm pretty sure its evil, but there's nothing about it being on the Dark Ones side so I suppose its evil in its own way and of its own accord because it killes humans and trollocs alike...more to the point I'd like to know where it came from because i somehow never understood...

It's a seperate evil. Speaking of seperate evils, where does mashadar come from.

It could be neutral or a different type of evil to the DO depending on how you look at it.

I don't think there is any evil separate from the Dark One.  It might work against him or think it's working against him, but in the end it's all the same.

It's a seperate evil. Speaking of seperate evils, where does mashadar come from.

Mashadar is the embodiment of the hate and corruption that destroyed the people of Aridhol after Mordeth arrived. It's evil, but it's mindless, and completely seperate from the DO. It hates the DO just as much as it hates the Light.

If Machin Shin is a result of the Taint, then why were the ways peaceful, and clear at one point in time (i remember Loial saying something about that)

The Way's were made with saidin, after it was tainted, as a "Thank You" to the Ogier for letting the male channlers stay in the stedding so-as to slow down the breaking. Because saidin was tainted, that taint grew and festered in the Ways, and after a time, they went dark, and somewhere along the line, Machin Shin came about. What we don't know is weather MS came into them, or if it grew in them.
